Maybe they all liked Beyond thunderDome more I loved Road warrior myself. Except for the Homoerotic guy chained to car thing, because his boy toy was killed. Give me mutants any day over psychotic Sodomisers.

You should play Fallout 1 & 2 because they're awesome and important games. VERY dated, obviously, but still awesome.

And if you are into old school (mid 80s) RPGs, hunt down a copy of Wasteland, the inspiration for all Fallout titles. Its really fucking dated, but the writing is as jaded, weird, and hilarious as the descendant games.

Well really, when you are a fighter do you really want to have longer hair? For close combat it gives them something to grab... And when your are trying to sneak through woods longer hair is more likely to get snagged.. A military or fighting based game makes more sense to have close cropt hair...

Well, would you rather a post-apocalyptic world be filled with long-haired androgynous emo kids who whine about their pathetic situation throughout the entire game?

I mean, in video games, those are pretty much your options: buzz-cut toughened military guy or androgynous emo kid. Well, that or over-enthusiastic and obsessive child bent on collecting something or another, but I don't think that's an option for Fallout.

I can't help but think of "A Boy and His Dog" when I see that first picture.

I am trying so hard not to get too over-hyped for this game.

I tried playing Fallout 2 yesterday in my PC.
It starts slow =/ at least the combat, but that's because of the isometric view so everything must be allright in this next game

I'm so eager to play it!

Is it just the hype behind the series that is blinding people to this game, or what? Every screenshot they've released has looked utter trash. Lower the resolution slightly and they wouldnt look out of place on the original Xbox.

The character models have that horrible overly-contrasted-bump-mapped look and everything is about as jaggy as it can get.

I know the landscape is supposed to be baron, but I'm sure they can do better than 2D grass an rocks made up of about 20 polygons.

This game is far from 'beautiful' or 'gorgeous' as people keep saying. Look at something like Bioshock, or Fable 2, or hell, even Killzone 2. They all make Fallout 3 look like it was from the early 90s.

First of all, lets establish the fact that screen shots often don't relay the actual game footage very well. Seeing as you have an infinite amount of time to look at one split second in game time, you are bound to pick out the glaring flaws of the picture.

Now I would argue that there really aren't any from what I've seen. i assume the picture you were/are referring to is the one on top of the post. First off, I'd much rather have 2d grass that sways realistically than 3d grass that doesn't. I would imagine that it is much easier to code, thus will look much better WHEN YOU ARE ACTUALLY PLAYING THE GAME.

Also, those "20 polygon rocks" you are looking at are parts of a building that has been destroyed. You know parts of a building...that are shaped...like polygons ? That being the case, i wouldn't see why they wouldn't be shaped as they are.

Much as the hype wagon makes people blindly neglect to talk about bad parts of a game, it also brings out the assholes such as yourself who try and find every little detail they can to damn the game to an eternity of playing Castlevania 2 with the powerglove...

Dick.

I'm sorry but no matter how you try and twist it, Fallout 3 is one of the most bog-standard-looking games this generation.

How is it that even in screenshots, most games look better? I know what you're saying about videos being better indicators, but thats not a factor when other games look superb in stills yet this doesnt.

I'm sorry, but your post is so laden with hyperbole that I cannot take your complaints seriously. As such, I have to assume that you just want to dislike this game. Did you forget what the original Xbox could do? If you did, here's an example from a flagship title.
http://www.armchairempire.com/images/Reviews/XBox/ninja-gaiden/ninja-gaiden-1.jpg

"They all make Fallout 3 look like it was from the early 90s." Yeah, it looks like they took the textures straight from Heretic. (1994) http://takegame.com/shooter/pictures/heretic.gif
Or maybe even Catacomb Abyss (1991)
http://www.fpsteam.it/old/pc-pratico/fps/old/fps/catacomb_003.jpg

Personally I like the aesthetic of the screen shots so far, particularly the character models. I wouldn't say it's the best looking environment in video games, but its engaging in its own way. And I needn't even say that the appeal of the Fallout series has never been in the graphics.

I've never played a Fallout game before. But everything I've seen about this game looks pretty cool. I do have a couple questions though for anyone who might know:
It's being made by the studio that did Oblivion, right?
And if so, is it going to be similar in gameplay?
Also, is it a problem that I have not played the previous games if I want to start with this installment?

Yes.
Yes.
No, it's nothing like them gameplay-wise, and it doesn't follow their story or have the same locations or characters. It's basically a really big Oblivion mod set in the Fallout universe.

I really want to think this game will be great, but the more I play Oblivion the less I like it. From the sounds of it they'll be doing things differently--more developed NPCs and quests and all that--and I hope it's enough.
