Hands-on with Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Light Speed

jump to lightspeedIn part two of our Lucas hands-on preview, I'll give you my impressions of Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Light Speed. Lucas is back in business, and clearly having a lot of fun making games. Don't miss part one of this series.

Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Light Speed certainly looks impressive. The game is only in beta so we got to see some error reporting on the screen as we travelled through a meteor shower in the Millenium Falcon. If you have any doubts that Lucas is up to the task of delivering great space combat, well, we’re not the ones to ask to ease your fears. Really, all we got to see was some absolutely stunning ship graphics, some beautiful explosions and a gun turret taking out baddy after baddy.

The basics are all there. It’s definitely going to be the best-looking Star Wars dog fight game ever made. If they can preserve the twitch nature of the beast (even with tens of thousands of people playing simultaneously) and manage to give everyone enough to do in space, then there’s a high level of confidence that this expansion will be one for the ages.

Our one question to the rep was, will this expansion pack eliminate the possibility that we’ll see an X-Wing or Tie Fighter sequel? The short answer is no. Lucas sees the expansion pack as added value for existing Galaxies subscribers. Though the space combat may draw in fans of the old dog fight series, Lucas knows there’s a hunger for X-Wing and Tie Fighter. Bottom line is they want to keep their options open. Other bottom line is that, if they do it right with JtLS, then there may not be a need for a sequel to those flight combat classics.
