So... distinguish for me the line we should draw between relationships kindled from withing MMORPG's and carried further out into RL, and the relationships kindled through chat rooms, online dating services, and the like.

I have my ideas of what the differences may be, but I was surprised not to see it in this article.

Hiya Aaron - Actually, I'm not sure there is much of a difference in your examples, other than what brought the two people together. One thing that is interesting is with chat rooms and online dating services often times you have to search for someone who shares your common interests in the RL, whereas in MMORPGs the gameplay itself already establishes a bond.

Also, having the game as a focus may make the meeting and courting part a little less intimidating so to speak, than in the more traditional online dating situation.

Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment!

The psychology of online relationships is certainly an interesting one. Ever since the first MUD's MUSH'es and chat rooms based on these systems, people have been reaching out to others for friendship, socializing, and companionship. A previous comment noted where to draw the proverbial line on relationships garnered from such mediums. The answer to that in my mind would be what ever feels comfortable to you and the person with which you have an online relationship.

Personally I keep things at a friendly level. While I may flirt with someone online, I feel that you cannot truly know someone without spending time with them. Getting very emotionally invested in someone without the benefit of knowing how they act and react is putting yourself way out on a limb. You can certainly get a fairly good idea of someone from just chatting or playing games with them, but you only see one side of a person. How people react to the world around them gives much more insight to their character. Before I am willing to give my heart to someone, I must feel like I know him or her better than simply chatting or playing on online RPG can provide.

This is only my opinion obviously. I would love to find a cute role-playing chick who is into overweight balding guys. =)

I think that's what we all want Mako :) And that is possibly one of the best aspects of meeting folks on-line. The personality has to shine through making the looks factor secondary. If only everything else in life could be that way.

I enjoyed reading this article. I knew that man and woman could get married in SWG. But its a first for me to read how you can get married.

But still... i have been playing SWG for about 3 months now and all ladies i have met ingame were guys in real life :P When will the real ladies get into gaming on MMORPG. Would be fun ;)
