Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater launch event
For some strange reason, the US market received Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater PRIOR to Japan.
Not sure what's up with that, but usually it's the other way round,
so take a few seconds to gloat at your good fortune.
Done? Good. Here's some great stuff from the launch event for the game in Tokyo this past Thursday. Highlights include
a very scary life size Solid Snake, appearances from various people involved in the project, and the seemingly
obligatory cute Japanese women. Wearing very strange hats.
Oh yes, and Snake pimping chocolate bars…
Why are US launches never this interesting?

I might be thinking of another series entirely, but I'm pretty sure this same thing happened with MGS2. The rationale was that it was Kojima's way of thanking the US market for making the first Metal Gear Solid a bigger success than it was at home in Japan.

Actually now you mention it, that sounds familiar.

He isn't pimping chocolate bars, those are Calorie Mates, a food you can eat in the game.

Quote: A new twist for Metal Gear Solid 3 is cobranding: Snake begins the game carrying the real-life "balanced food" CalorieMate.
Note the words "real life".
A search on Google shows up a Japanese... Something called that, but not speaking Japanese, it's all gibberish to me.

i thought these games were a much larger success in japan than they were here?
I know the MSX wasn't exactly the hugest console in the US...
