The GameBoy Advance is still alive and
kicking, at least in the minds of those developers who wish to someday port every single NES game onto the portable
device—and besides, you can stuff the GBA cartridges into the DS anyway. That being said, Square recently
released Dawn of Souls, a compilation title that includes the original Final Fantasy adventures (I & II).
Sure, Square pulled off this package before, way back on the PSOne (FF Origins), but this latest version adds a few
more tweaks and scraps the boring art galleries and FMV cinematics.
What fans will get is the feature to save anywhere, along with an updated (and more forgiving) level-up system.
Even the story has been tweaked, filling in some holes and extending the length of the tale. Players will also be
treated to several new dungeons and 70 new enemies (yanked from latter FF games). In the end, Dawn of Souls is a
solid example of a worthwhile retro-collection. It's the first instance in which FF I & II have been made
available to a portable audience, and it's about time!
