Halo 3… Xbox 2… dirty rumors???
Over on the Xbox Forums, sci_monkey has
unloaded a ton of Xbox 2 & Halo 3 info—apparently from an insider-friend at Bungie. Can we believe all of
sci_monkey's ranting? No, of course not. But there's just so much…
Continue on for some of the highlights:
Bungie has received Xbox 2 development kits also sent prototype Xbox 2 controllers The controllers appear to be more rounded wireless versions of the Controller S that look and operate eerily similar to the Logitech Cordless Controller.
Bungie is really pushing to have Xbox 2 feature backward compatibility and a HDD. Bungie wants fans to be able to play all three games of the trilogy on the same console. More importantly, a HDD is needed if Bungie is to make Halo 3s levels massive, completely destructable (down to every building, tree, and ambient life form), and incorporate all the other features that they are planning.
Bungie is considering including several new types of grenades including EMP grenades with a much larger blast radius that are ideally suited for temporarily disabling all nearby vehicles including airborne vehicles like the banshee, proximity grenades that only explode if someone approaches them within ten seconds and fast moving grenades that bounce all over the map for 10 seconds until they hit a player or vehicle standard grenades can be made into either sticky grenades, EMP grenades, proximity grenades, or bouncing grenades based on which button the player holds down as they press the trigger to launch the grenade into the air.
...battles over bodies of water will be included in the third game of the series and this will be accommodated by making it so that all the covenant hover vehicles including the wraith and the ghost will be able to hover on both water and land.
The outdoor levels also allow players to free roam and choose which battles they wish to engage.
AI will be ramped up some more, the multiplayer games will support up to 32 players at once, as well as a few more playable characters with unique strengths and weaknesses The playable characters being considered include Hunters (bigger targets, slower except when charging someone without a weapon, but they have more life, are much faster and have more varied melee attacks) and the flying Drones found in the first level of Halo 2 (weaker but faster and possessing the ability to fly limited distances)
Bungie is seriously considering taking the Halo universe back to its original roots in some of massive outdoor maps in the single player campaign. And by its original roots, Im referring to how Halo originally started as an RTS. Fear not Halo fans, a top priority of Bungie is that this be integrated into the gameplay seamlessly so that players can easily switch back and forth from the aerial RTS perspective whenever they desire.

Interesting speculation and rumor here. I read somewhere else that Bungie was going to release a Halo 2.5 with the upcoming Xbox Next, which would include true HD graphics, and additional multiplayer features, and maybe additional development of the single player story past where the story currently abruptly ends (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/7408/Halo-25-and-Xbox-2-The-Bomb/). Team XBOX has been hard at work digging through patents and trying to get additional info.
Sci_monkey is saying that it will be a brand new Halo, i.e., Halo 3, but considering the length of development for Halo 2, I find it hard to believe a Halo 3 will be released with Xbox Next (less than a year development?). Even if they have been concurrently working on Halo 3 before releasing 2, it still would be a pretty short development cycle. I kind of believe the Halo 2.5 story, and here is why (my theory):
When Bungie started making Halo 2, they got pretty ambitious, and realized that they might want to make it an Xbox Next title. But they were caught between releasing it as an Xbox title late in the XBox's life-span, and having it to far done to wait for a release as an Xbox-Next title. Considering extremely high demand for a sequel now, Bungie and M$ forgoed the decision to make it an Xbox Next title in favor of profits now. But there was still a problem - considering the success of the original Halo to be a launch title for the first Xbox, M$ still wants a Halo for Xbox Next. Solution: release Halo 2 now, but make the underlying code robust enough to make a quick "upgrade" possible, and worth it's weight as a additional title. But who would want to spend $50 on an "expansion pack" game? My bet is that M$ will bundle Halo 2.5 with the new system!!
So to summarize, Bungie was caught making some rough decisions (between a rock and hard place!), and had to compromise. Halo 2 now, bundle an upgraded version with the new hardware (Collector's edition anybody?). Who doesn't want more of the single player story, and true HD graphics?? ME ME!
Anyways, take it for what it's worth - an outsider's opinion!

Would it really hurt for people to wait 4 months?

HD graphics are not a major selling point nor will they be for a few more years. The installed base of HDTV systems simply isn't growing fast enough for the next geration of video game systems to make a big push around it. You'll see more HDTV support in the next generation but it will remain an option that is ignored by many developers.

The writer, sci_monkey, has some misconceptions about the issues making backward compatibility difficult for Microsoft. Running the X86 code is a non-issue. Emulating the Xbox's 733 MHz CPU on any processor likely to be used in the new machine is easily done, especially in the wake of Microsoft's purchase of Connectix, who produce Virtual PC. The big issue is the proprietary IP in Nvidia's chips within the Xbox. Microsoft doesn't own the innards to those chips, just the right to use them in a game system. The head of Nvidia has already stated publicly that MS cannot make the Xbox 2 backward compatible without reaching some new agreement with Nvidia that would add some measure of cost to supporting Xbox software on the new machine above and beyond the hardware cost itself. The problem isn't technological, it's legal/political issues that stand in their way.
GhostyDog @ Dec 18th 2005 9:58PM
XBox 2 probably wouldnt have the power to emulate an x86 environment using connectix' software emulaion engine unless they put 2 G5 CPUs in there and a shedload of RAM. I have run Virtual PC on macs for a number of years and it always runs like mud.
We have heard rumours of NextBox being a multi-cpu machine so this may be the case, however G5s are not cheap. Wouldn't the best way of making it backwards compatible be hard coding nvidias routines into the custom chipset being developed under licence by ati? cheaper to licence nvidias routines than beef up the processing power.
An accomodation will have to be made with nvidia, and at this stage probably already has been if the leak from EA about release date is to be believed. Either that, or it just wont be backwards compatible, anyway, people who have the old games must have an xbox to play it on, why not just keep both? Emulation could also compromise gameplay, especially for Live gamers.
Geomeo @ Dec 18th 2005 9:58PM
There is no way, I repeat no way that Xbox 2 will have a Halo 2.5.
Why, we're talking about a huge franchise that celebrates financial and fans success. The chances of a such an IP as this to come out with a new coat of paint - would spark a negative reaction from the fan base and the industry..,Bungie knows this, so does microsoft. Why? - seeing it side by side to true next gen titles (Perfect Dark, Fable 2, Elder Scrolls etc.) Would risk the quality of the franchise. Without Halo - Xbox would been six feet under already - Do you really think microsoft/bungie would take a chance like that? Do you?
kingaffiliation @ Dec 18th 2005 9:58PM
i agree with Geomeo as saying that Xbox would already be dead without Halo. Even if you dont want to think about it, and even if you think M$ is stupid;theyre not that stupid, they know that if they let Bungie go, then they are going away from gaming as we know it. So in other words, they ARE NOT going to get rid of Bungie they are going to do everything and anything possible to make sure they stay on top, even if it costs less to let Bungie leave, they arent going to...they know theyre toast w/out them...
Heuj Creeper @ Dec 18th 2005 9:58PM
Hmmm, seems speculative to me. It would be nice to have an upgraded halo for free on a system I'm going to buy regardless. I would have to say the only reason it would make sense to do something like this would be if the next xbox was NOT backwards compatable. I really don't care about the other games on xbox, but If I can't play halo 2 on it... Well, I'll be pretty pissed let me tell you what. Okay, that's my 2 cents guys... bye.

The new xbox 360's controller is really awesome in some ways, but in other ways the idea is kind of dumb. The xbox 360 controller holds the memory in it where ever you go. That is a very good idea because if you don't want to start over at a friends you won't have to. A dumb thing is that you can never delete the saved games on it.
