Wow, the folks at Gamespot sure do have some opinions about Sony's PSP launch price. Reading their takes on the $250
they're about to part with is a good read. No editorial restraint here!
Personally, I don't see what the big deal is. The launch price is just that, a launch price. Sony sees they can make a
few extra bucks by introducing the device as a "bundle" and they're taking it. I certainly agree that the bundle itself
is lame. A 32 MB mem stick actually works against Sony's attempt to be "cool" like the iPod. I think my contact list, 3
pictures of my cats and a song would suck that space up in a heartbeat.
I agree and disagree with Greg Kasavin, the site's Executive Editor. He makes a great point that Sony has done a
brilliant job of marketing the device as sleek and sexy. This success will make it something desirable across many
demographics. But I disagree that the PSP price is some kind of signal that Sony is not competing with the Nintendo DS.
To me, that's like saying the Gamecube wasn't competing with Xbox when it first came out, because it was cheaper and
didn't include a modem. Just because it's priced differently and has different features doesn't mean it's competing in
a different market. Sony wants to stomp the Big N into oblivion, and vice versa. Make no mistake about it.
