The big news here isn't the article, it's the article's quality.
We all make mistakes. Typos, misspellings, bad diction — it's all part of this writing life. We don't mean to judge.
Really. But this CBSNews.com article needs special attention.
CBSNews.com has posted a piece on the Nintendo and Sony portable offerings. It's a confusing read, to say the least.
Content-wise it makes a number of mistakes. It talks about unreleased games as if they're just waiting on the shelves
for you to snap up. Then there's the incorrect name for Metal Gear Acid ("Metal Gear Solid"). But the content isn't the
real issue. The grammar is the real issue.
A choice sample of the grammatical errors:
You can buy currently up to a 1G-memory stick but that would easily run $150 to $300 definitely a cost productive
venture unlike the iPods and Archos of the present day where they come stock with at least 20 to 40Gigs of onboard
storage.
Most of the article reads like this. Or this:
The PSP is a 4 in 1 unit. You can look at pictures, watch movies and most importantly play games on.
CBSNews is a mainstream source for news and opinion. A lot of potential gamers will read their site before they read
ours. If "Nintendo DS vs. Sony PSP" is their first impression of what our community has to offer, then the piece is
doing us a disservice.
We're the first to admit that we make mistakes on Joystiq. We edit our own work and then look out for each other. In
the time we've been live, you guys have done a great job of keeping us on our toes. Help us keep CBS on its toes, and
tell them what you think of the article.
The CBS writer is a good writer. Read his other stuff on the site and you'll see. But, like all of us, he needs an
editor to clean up. CBSNews.com should respect him (and us) enough to offer one.
