Possible GT4 problems?
A good number of people seem to be having issues with Gran
Turismo 4. Some of these problems are most likely due to modchips not playing nice with dual layer disks, which are a
rarity among PS2 titles. But a lot of folks can't run the game, even on brand new systems. It just hangs. Other people
are seeing horrendous skipping on the intro.
Sony seem to think there may be a bad batch of disks out there, but there are cases of people who have the game that
works on one system, but not another.
I got the game, but I've not had a chance to test it yet. If you've bought it, have you had any problems? What model
PS2?

Will not work in my Revision B Xbox. Oh wait - it's still unplugged, I sent in the powercord.
Johnny @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I started a discussion at Auto Blog and seems like there is a problem:

Also, my old PS2 (no mod) running component cables to 24" arc wega failed to read the disc the very first time I ran the game. It's also suffering from sporadic jitters.

i have been experiencing the screen jitter/shake thing, i'm relieved to find out its not just my copy.
spike @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
it works fine for my 30001 ps2, modchip included ;)
John @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I've had jitter/shake problems as well. It seems to happen on night courses. I have no idea what version my PS2, except that it's as old as dirt and I bought it used.
Alps @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
yeah i have a bit of screen jitter. I had to go out and buy a new slim ps2 cause my old ps2 turned inoperable. I tried it on 2 tvs, i get the jitter with both, but it is only for the very begining of some races.
eggo @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Haven't seen any of these issues on my unit. I got my hands on the game on Tuesday and it worked just fine from the beginning. Alas, I don't have the new "updated" dieted version. For reference, my unit is the SCPH-30001R.
Adam R @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
At least you guys GOT the game. I just bought it tonight in Canada at Walmart. Brought the game unopened to work, where I was gonna give it a try. I open the PERFECTLY sealed game with security sticker on top only to find it EMPTY... No english instructions, no disc... The only thing inside were about six CD/DVD label sheets folded up inside. Whatever was printed on them was peeled off.
Needless to say I am SUPER angry and will be raising some serious hell at Walmart when they open, as well with Sony for shipping it like this.
Steve @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I've managed to test it on my machine now. Only glitch is the flickering one. It's a minor glitch, but it's so common, how in the hell did that get past QA at PD? Honestly, that's moronic.
Mercifully there's no other issues I've noticed. Well, aside from the fact that I suck:) (Albeit got 3 licenses done already.)
Steve @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Adam: Are you sure it was completely sealed? I've heard of that happening at places like Wal-Mart before, where a member of staff removes the disks. I hate to say it, but you will have a hard time I think because they will, of course, assume you're a dirty thief. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
My local Wal-Mart said the game wasn't out until March. I hate Wal-Mart...
Bubba Gump @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
it flickers on me too, should i get a new copy
Greg @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I noticed a few minor flickers a the beginning of the races with running starts. It sounds like the drive is still accessing. Once the racing begins, its fine. The standing start races don't seem to have this problem. Intro is fine. PS2 received at Xmas 02.
Will @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I played for about an hour last night, I have one of the very first batches of PS2 (got it right when it came out) and it played perfectly even using component 1080i. Didn't get very far in the game obviously but so far very impressed with it.
Cam @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Mine works fine except for a little jitter every great once in a while (only on the Paris track so far.) My PS2 is old and bruised, modded thrice, missing scews, and hates playing backups, but it plays GT4 nice and smooth.
jimmie @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I'm just pissed that they dropped the online gaming feature. This new crop of defects just fuels the fire.
Hopefully tekken5 won't see the same probs.
Jorge @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I got the jitter thing also. Other than that the game is OK! (Don't know my PS2 version, bought it on 2001)
jojowasher @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Ya, I have the weird "jitter" thing, you can see it on the placements at the end of the races, the white writing seems to come apart, with black lines through it, it is really strange. I have the newest slim PS2.
Jojo

#9 Adam: man you should take some pictures of your finding and write to the Walmart headquarter and see what they can offer you in return as well. You have every reason to hate walmart for getting this treatment... but for #11 Steve, kust because you can't get a game in walmart doesn't mean you can't get it else where. Really no reason for hating them for not getting a single item there.... gee..
Stargazer @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I've got the screen jitter too on the menu screens before and after the races. I've got an older PS2 (bought new in 2002). The jitter seems to coincide with the camera following the car when it drives on the rumble strips. That's fine when you are viewing from inside the car during a race, but it doesn't make sense when you are outside the car *and* in the menus.
brian @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
yep, on the stats at the end of races i notice it - jitters and distortion that make some of the lettering borderline unreadable. no modchips or anything here. not every race... maybe every 8th one. it persists until the next screen redraw.
Jon @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Just thought I would post a note about online racing in reference to jimmie's post. If you are comfortable with networking type stuff do a search for Kai XLink and read the FAQs. Looks like online racing might be possible although I am still waiting for my game to arrive so can't confirm personally.
Also, if you're interested, check out http://www.gt4.us

I've experienced the screen jitters once or twice in nearly 36 hours of play. Minor, minor, minor... an irritant only, that has not interfered with enjoying the hell out of GT4.
What I like about GT$ is the ability to do things that you would never, ever, ever do in the real world. Anyone (besides me) tried racing Toyota Priuses on a dirt track yet?
Steve @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
What I've learnt:
If you change the brightness setting in the game, some are claiming that fixes the flickering. Others are saying buggering around with the options in game for interlace etc... Fix it. Note: Not tried either of these myself. They could blow your TV up for all I know:)
Joey Geraci @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
You can Priuses/Pria? That is sweet!
Steve @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Ah yes, the Prius. The "green" car that isn't really. (Diesels get more than twice the MPG of the Prius.)
Trev UK @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I've been getting the flickering on the license test description screens, and at the start of races in the Japanese Events. Only lasts a few seconds, but I'm still surprised this got through QA. One of the things I've been so impressed with the GT series is the lack of any graphics glitches. "Say it ain't so Joe!!??" ;-)

I've noticed that jittering happens more frequently when you toggle the Brightness and Contrast in replays.
To do this, simply go to the options menu (which can be accessed before the race/after the race, or main menu) and select 'Picture Quality'; then scroll down to the 'TV Replay Views'.
There should be some selections as Brightness, Contrast, etc. I've personally experienced higher amounts of jitter when I raise Brightness and Contrast to 5 (highest). I haven't experimented with 'Color' yet, but I would assume this would even jitter the game further.
Just my 2 cents,
-[KZ]
P.S. This game is addictive =S

im getting the screen jitters too. i have the new slim ps2
Tony @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
The intro on my copy is near unviewable, and I get the jitters before some races, and in some menus. I have a 1st gen PS2, bought at release, never modded nor opened.

James McAuliffe @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Im just starting to have a strange problem with my copy. The transmission (manual mode) winds up in random gears throughout the race and the camera switches at random points or when someone bumps me. Its pretty frustrating to wait this long for a game, and have as especially hard time playing it. My PS2 is a 1st run, 1st generation. A friend of mine has the new slim line, and has the same problems with my copy.
daniel hopson @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
my problem has just started its on the IA LICENSE and on step 6 it hangs in the load. instead of the white circle spinning its red and just spins. Im just so pissed and I hope this problem is common. If it is how do i get a new copy
brooli @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Hi there.
Im from Germany, got the PAL-Version of the game and it doesnt work, too.
I read that the most have problems caused by dirty lenses and "overheated" PS2s when reading a double layer disc.
I think that SCE knows that a while. MGS2 was an double layer disc, too...and some got the same problems with it.
My PS2 doesnt even starts reading the disc.
Tonight I will try to clean my lense and give it another try.
If it still doesnt work afterwards...i have to wait for the PSP-Version ;)
Semtex @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I bought the game yesterday, i live (and probably die) in the Netherlands so i use a pal scph-35004 ps2 with the first messiah chip and 120 gb maxtor hd successfully using free hdloader (dvd version)
So i went playing the game for the first time.. and noticed frame drops in the intro movie.. not at the beginning but at the moment the car revolves in closest view. And also when i drive a race in time trail, at the moment i quit the race and exit... the game hangs! in the loading screen, not always but way to much 8(
The the movies in the time trail menu also skip every 3 seconds.
I fixed the hang problem by disconnecting the hard disk, but the intro(movie) keeps dropping frames and menu movies keep skipping.
Also tried to put the game on hard disk but hdloader tells me to put in a ps2 disk 8(
I made an iso with dvddecrypter and put it on mij ps2 maxtor hd with WinHIIP, all went fine but still no go.
wayne bender @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I have the flickering problem as well but what bothers me more is some times my steering wheels center just changes in the middle of a race. Over all I found the game a real disappointment. You can't use your GT cars in arcade mode what is up with that? I'm going back to GT3.
Steve @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Semtex: The game checks for the dual layers of the DVD. Hasn't been cracked yet.
Wayne: Don't know about the wheel, but when you get a car in GT mode, it opens in arcade mode. Done this myself. I don't think the cars you can't race appear though, so no, for example, Caterham's. The reason being they are made of far more polygons and the PS2 can't handle more than one on track at a time.
Semtex @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
pdate!!! the hang problem was random so i thought i fixed it by disconnecting my hard drive, but the problem returned.(with a vengeance) I started cleaning my lens...but ended up with a real bad skipping intro movie (not the frame drops i mentioned earlier) I finally fixed the skip and hang problem by turning the big white laser angle wheel clockwise a notch or ten.
witch also shortened the startup time of the game drastically! 8)
Only thing i am left with now.. is a 5 seconds skip interval of 50% of the track movies you see before entering a track/race.
But i think i can live with that...for the time being.. in the meanwhile ill comfort myself with the thought somebody on this beautiful planet is working his @ss of at his very moment to get a HD-loader patch on the net with his name on it 8)
So people go for the big white laser angle wheel!
The game is AWESOME! the sense of speed is unmatched.

Kevin Boulden @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
MAJOR BUG Found in GT4. Will They ever fix it?
When steering, the controller adds brake or accelerator - I initially thought the TCS system or similar was on.
Then I realised the bug - when using dual shock controller, if you assign the accelerator or brake to any control (other than default), the control still remains in the default position as well as the new position.
On GT3, i put the steering on the right analogue stick, and the accelerator and brake on the left analogue stick. This was fine in GT3. THE BIG BUG - GT4 lets you do the same thing but you end up with the accelerator and brake on BOTH analogue sticks - thus when you steer, you get conflicitng inputs between the sticks - makes the game unuseable.
I never liked steering wheels as they are too slow lock to lock. I don't like using buttons, as it makes a mockery of a simulation. I want the same type of experince that GPL gave - so with gt3 i set it up like an RC Car and used simulation tyres with all aids off - loved sliding the car.
Unfortuantely GT4 with this bug is a backward step for me.
Regards,
Kev

I have noticed flicker during the first 20 to 30 seconds of many races (mostly night), but no other problems on a stock 30001.

I get the red cursor after one race. When I got the game it worked fine all the way threw all the liscenses and the first set of races in the beginner races. I started playing the driving missions and it started hanging up. I also get a jitter at the beginning of some races. HELP!!!
Zach @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
My Brother-in-law and I both have GT4. We both experience jitter problems. His worst case was an entire race he did with split screen Mini Cooper S. It shook the whole time.
mike f @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Well we waited long enough didnt we? Ive experienced the jitters for about five seconds also. Too many worthless cars that you cant sell or use (so whats the point)? Rally game mode is damn near impossible to win. It is a fantastic game but they filled it with crap that nobody will ever use. I was told from a so called "expert gamer" that we all were lucky to even get this version in ps2 instead of ps3. Ill tell you right now dont waste your time with your tv as long as its working because its only a reciever for whats ever broadcast to it. Clean the lens and check you connections Im sure that 99% of the problem is the disk.
ERic @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I just bought the game today and It works perfect, including all video. I have the very first model ps2.. the one with the extra 2 screws, no mod chip .
Jay Steele @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
My version hangs in random (but consistent) spots in the game. For example, the fourth stage of the IA license test hangs when it tries to load, so I can't complete that license. When I win certain series (like the Truck races in the Beginner area) it hangs when it tries to present me with the prize vehicle (I have to reboot, and it doesn't remember that I won that series). I've basically gotten as far as I can possibly go in the game without advancing past those points in the game.
I bought mine from EB Games, but they said they have a 2 week replacement policy, unless I purchased the up-front ransom they offer (disguised as "game insurance"). Its the last game I ever buy there.
I contacted Sony, but they need me to return the game to them and they'll issue a replacement in 4-6 weeks.
The whole experience has left me a little jaded. I just want to play the game I spent my hard earned money on, y'know?
