Every year has to be the "Year of…" for some genre or another. The Year of the RPGs, the Year of the RTSs, the Year
of the MMORPGs. Oy. If we had to take a look back at 2004, we'd say it was the year of the shooter. Far Cry, Half-Life
2, Doom 3, Painkiller. How much better can you get? Well, soon after finishing Ferrago's
list of 2005's shooters and getting a tickly feeling, we
now get Happy Puppy's take on the FPS genre.
The piece includes Star Wars: Republic Commando, Pariah, Brothers in Arms, STALKER, Far Cry: Instincts, FEAR, Rainbow
Six: Lockdown, Unreal Championship 2, Project: Snowblind and Doom 3 for Xbox. Okay, that's a lot of shooters. But does
the sheer quantity of FPSs make this the Year of the Shooter? If most of them suck, then what?
