Reading the post Ben made earlier today about Nintendo got
me thinking, and that's always dangerous. A quick skim of the list of titles for Q2 shows eight coming from Nintendo
themselves.
Now, before I venture any further, some fans of the company seem to take anything other than praise for Nintendo as a personal attack, and I do not mean any of the following to be taken that way.
However, to quell my own curiosity, I must ask the following honest, serious question, in the hopes of an honest, serious answer.
The question that came to mind when reading the release list was this:
Are any Nintendo fans getting tired of so many titles involving a madcap Italian plumber and his friends?
I mean there?s obviously a market out there, but seeing four titles from the same franchise in Q2 over three systems strikes me as excessive, and I?m really hoping for an honest response from Nintendo fans. To be blunt, are you sick of seeing Nintendo churn out Mario title after Mario title? And if not, how come?
Maybe it?s just that Nintendo?s way of doing business is so vastly different from the other console makers that those who feel largely indifferent to the company don?t get it, but four different titles involving the same franchise seems like overkill.
Look at Gran Turismo 4. While it?s not been on a par with Halo 2, there is a huge amount of emotion involved for a lot of people, myself most definitely included. GT4 is an event. If Sony were throwing out several GT titles a year, let alone a quarter, there?d be no event to get excited about. The releases wouldn?t be a big deal. I?m curious why Nintendo fans don?t seem to obviously feel that way. In short, as someone who is largely indifferent to Nintendo, I?d like to know what makes you tick, and makes you so loyal to the company.
This is not meant to bash Nintendo. Quite the opposite, in fact. I would really like to know what it is about Nintendo that generates a passion on a level with only the most adored sports teams and world leaders.
Note: Play nice in the comments, or they?ll be deleted.
