Roman Sizykh needed a topic for a college essay on the subject of "Write about one of your
hobbies and how it has affected you" and so he wrote about his experiences in the MMOG City of Heroes. The essay (and
certainly, his academic achievements) won him admission at several colleges.
Here's a snippet of the essay:
"At times when my work is done, I am a superhero. I go through the streets in my shiny costume fighting crime. Going to other dimensions, saving the earth from certain doom, and rescuing innocent civilians from office buildings is a mundane task for me."
It's nice to see someone getting into college on the strength of his MMOG experience. For years, these games have only served to help sink students, not make them.
Update: A reader notes that he beat Mr. Sizykh to the punch by a few years and left a link in the comments to his successful NYU application essay on Super Mario Brothers.
