In typical Gamespot fashion, they cover the hell out of The Mobies. I watched these Gamespot folks at work at GDC,
and I can tell you this…they are pros. They sweep into the room, cover a story with as many people as it takes, and
disappear as quickly as they came — with all the orange drink bottles left empty on the table.
What are The Mobies? They're the awards given to the best mobile games of the year. This year the winners were
announced in New Orleans at CTIA — the wireless conference that our buddies at
Engadget are also covering brilliantly.
Some of the standout winners were:
Best Action: Star Trek Birds of Prey
Best Strategy: Rainbow Six 3
SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT
Best Game: Topolon (a puzzle game in the Tetris cloth)
Mobile gaming may be in its infancy, but the pressure is already on to make excellent titles. While I wasn't impressed
with much of the stuff I saw in 2004, it does look like 2005 is poised to be the breakout year. Why do I say this?
Because copious amounts of cash are getting thrown at the industry. Does this mean that the games will get better? No.
Does this mean I'm just hoping for the hell of it? Yes.
