So does the recent announcement about the PSX's ability to rip video for the PSP give us a peek at the future?
GamesRadar seems to think so. The PSX was dead last week, but now it's sprung back to life with a couple of new models
that allow users to convert video into MPEG-4 format for PSP viewing. The burn process (to a memory stick) is a slow
one, taking up to five hours, but it may indicate that Sony is, indeed, going to make their new handheld a very
customizable item.
What's confusing about the move by Sony, is the apparent smack-down of their new UMD format. Hell, if you can rip a
film to a memory stick and watch movies on the PSP, why should you bother buying the UMD? Could this be a signal that
UMD will actually come in a recordable format sooner than later? Or does Sony see as much profit from you buying
multiple memory sticks as they do from UMD film sales? And how does the PS3 fit into all this? You know it will.
Ah, questions. I count a total of 5, above. Where art thou, answers?
