Engadget snags multiple Xbox 360 pics
There is no rest for the folks at Engadget. They work 24/7 to get the latest on hardware, and that certainly remains
true for everything Xbox 360. They've given us three peeks at the console and its peripherals in the last day. All of
them sweet.
First up is the big 'un. The console itself. Apparently
taken by someone at the MTV event with a cell phone camera, the shot shows the console in all its glory, along with a
headset and what could be the eye toy device that has been rumored.
Then there's the shot of the controller. The silver X is
a great touch. Overall, a nice looking accessory, though we wonder what the extra button/ball is for. It doesn't look
like a scrolling device (you'll notice the numbers 1-4 on each corner of the "X", which would imply that it's
clickable).
Then, the remote control. Yup, this puppy will let you do everything the original Xbox did, plus more. Though we'll have to wait for the MTV special to know exactly what else it can do.
Next up, (from Team Xbox)a peek at the reported skinnable feature of the box. Hey, when Allard said he thought people wanted to customize their gaming experience, he wasn't kidding.
So that about wraps up this mystery. Where's the PS3 and Revolution?

It looks pretty ugly. The white plastic of the controller has a very cheap feeling to it, unlike the high-quality white found in Apple products. But I'll make my final opinion on the Xbox360 after I see it in real life. Still, I'm pretty disappointed.
Jason @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
There's something warm and wet in my pants and I don't think I pissed 'em.
I wonder how long it will be before this one is cracked and hacked.
I'll take 2 please!

Karmakin @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
More than likely it'll be much harder to hack, considering what they went through the last time. From what I hear, retailers are fuming about crappy sales of x-box games..sooo..
In any case, it's still the same crappy buttons that your fingers can slide right off of. It's a shame too. They have a good developer line-up..
Daryl @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
The silver ball is for the channel selection. It says, clockwise, 2, 4, 3, 1. What if you're LANing and you are near another XBox? I guess it just picks up the nearest (and available) one. Anyway, a built-in (apparently) receiver is awesome.
Pex @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Wow, I'm amazed. I didn't know you could feel something through pictures, but I guess you can. How did you learn to do that, Edward?
Zeo @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
This is SO FRIGGIN' UGLY.
UGH.
Aragon32 @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
It isnt that ugly. Ok so it isnt as good looking as...
wait no its better than any current one save PSP.
And I think I like it.
Riggs @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
*Sigh* another friggin huge console.
NEXT!
Daryl @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
WTF? Compare the disc drive to the Xbox's disc drive, and then see the size.
Steve @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
How can the X360 be backwards compatible with no black and white buttons?
Game @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
MMMMMMMMMM I don't remember the topic being how good or bad the appearance of next gen xbox was!" Everyone has an opinion!" Whats important to me is if xbox 360 has what gamers want in gameplay and varity. P.s love 360 or hate it has your attention. Peace!"
Aris @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
4 shoulder buttons instead of 2 triggers? That would compensate.
sandro @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Holly macarroni... This new Xbox thing looks like a mix from:(amatoure copy that is)
Apple
Sony
* Common Microsoft just hire someone creative and make something more appealing, I want to replace my current Xbox with proud!!!
Tony @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
My eyes! The goggles, they do nothing!
I've never seen a next gen console that looks 3 gens out of date before. The SNES takes one look at this thing and laughs. It looks like the Phantom and the Xbox had some kinda lovechild.
The original Xbox was a great homage of the Dreamcast design if you ask me, but this... I want to disown this and it's not even out yet. Why couldn't it just be black and not 70's retro-scifi sleek?
Ben Sanborn @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
wow you guys are mega tools. if you honestly think it's ugly compared to the CHEAP ASS look of PS2 and Xbox 1 your simply confused.
as to Tony post #12, your rediculous.
klinko @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
It looks like a compressed Easy-Bake Oven.
Zeo @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Ben Sanborn: Uh, PS2 looks cheap? No, PS2 looked cool when it first came out. Mini PS2 looks a lot better than both PS2 and this piece of shit new Xbox.
Long Tran @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
it looks like a dell consumer desktop painted white and turned on it's side. whether or not that's ugly or ok looking is subjective. But I highly doubt many will call it beautiful industrial design. I wonder how the japanese will react to it since they really dislike big electronics.
Carl @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
I really could care less what it looks like, I just hope I can stack shit on top of it UNLIKE the current Xbox, PS2 was nice and let me do that... why wont you be nice.... And it would be nice if designers stopped taking the approach "Let's make our hardware "Stand out!", no I want my shit to look like the rest of my shit and be on the same damn pile,,, FOCUS ON TEH ****ing GAMES!
Game @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Playstation two looked like a deformed piece of crap when it first came out . I'm stil looking for the top story graphics it claimed to fame it would produce. Jiggies lol the GC looks better than xbox and ps2 the jiggy cheap system. What I don't understand about Ps2 fans is why buy a system three or four times when you no something isn't right with it. OOh i forget slap dodo on a stick and say it's a Sony people buy Sad!"
Jerrybean @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
I've heard it rumored this thing may be skinable. Maybe they will sell a paper bag you can put over it. At least then it wouldn't look so bad.
Jared @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
#20 wtf? You heard it rumored? It says that it's skinnable in the friggin news article you are commenting on. God you're an idiot.
#10 Do some research, the black and white buttons are triggers now.
Personally I think it looks fantastic.
But what I don't understand is why everyone is yelling "omg it looks horrible therefore next gen games on xbox 360 are going to suck."
Matthew @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
This is ridiculous. One showing of Halo 3, and no one will give a rats a$$ about the look of the Hardware. I honestly feel like this is the first generation where people are really going to see if they like it before they buy it. There has to be substance. I don't think people are really going to fall for the hype this time. They want to see the games. If it doesn't pique their interest, they won't buy it; if it does, they will. Honestly guys, just wait until you see the games. If you see what you like, you won't really care for the hardware. Sure it's nice. But for once, I feel like this time, it will be more "true substance" than just something that's artificial.
Ash @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Cool! I'm the first person to notice that there's a green windows start button on the remote. If you can use this thing as a PC, I might even get one. But they'd probably disable the awesome ATI graphics capabilities so that it's not a killer gaming PC that hooks up oh-so easily to my 1080p lcd tv.
oh yeah, what #21 said.
Dave @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
I don't care if it's as big as a house--as long as it means I can take my PC upgrade fund and apply it toward an HDTV instead.
Scott Canoni @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
So ugly.
It better lay horizontal otherwise it won't be laying to my TV.
Jon @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Of course it lays horizontal. Haven't you seen previous pics of it Horizontal. In fact horizontal seems to be it's default design. Look at the picture above and see the rubber feet pads on the side that would be the bottom when laid horizontal.
I am a graphic designer and I very much think it looks pretty cool. It is a very fresh and contemporary design. Simplistic and curvy. When apple creates simplistic curvy things everyone wants to bow down and worship them. When MS makes anything, they are ostrisized. This is good industrial design and will look good in an entertainment center. Unique but not too gaudy. I love the change to the Xbox Live headset. The other one was not good for resting your head back on the couch.
Interesting that there is a live TV button and Record button on the remote. I'm really hoping for some great Media Center functionality. I built my own system and it gets pretty complicated. Xbox 360 with Media Center capabilities would make it much easier and accessible to the masses. Lets hope the price is not more than $299
Quiiick @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Yes, of course, at the end of the day it's only the games that matter.
But meanwhile: This is the ugliest piece of crap I've seen in a long time. Even more ugly than the original Xbox.
And if the games are anything like the look of the system, Microsoft will be drawing out of the console wars.
Ben @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Why must it be ugly? Why? Why?
Riggs @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
@ no. 26
Apple makes nice slender looking things. This looks like a fat lady sat on a white box
Alanm @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
My guess is that the 1,2,3,4 on the controller refers to which port the joystick is plugged into. I've been fed up following cables to the controller forever now.
Geez @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
It's funny how people moan about comments on the looks, what else are we to do.
Personally I'm not a fan, it looks like the cheap lumps of "futuristic" plastic seen in Blake 7 and the like (gazed looks of WTF from the young 'uns here) - and in my personal opinion that's not a good thing. It just looks very tacky to me, especially peripherals, the console at least has the swooping design which half makes up for the tacky colour - but the pad etc are fugly.
Ah well, design don't maketh the games bad, I'd just prefer it looked like it belonged in the room - not like a 40 year old sci-fi prop.
pedro @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
I personally want to see the back of it!! I hope it uses industry standard jacks, although they will likely be proprietary. Will it be HDMI or just straight component connections for the high def?
Oh, and AlanM, the controllers are WIRELESS! The numbers refer to which #1 controller you are currently using. To switch to the second port you select 2, etc.
Frankly @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Geez, I wonder who would have been surprised to see you on here saying something looked bad that didn't come from Nintendo. And you are dating yourself with that Blake 7 reference, so don't blame the people reading when they don't get it... blame yourself for being clown enough to want to post it. If this thing was made by Nintendo you would be celebrating it. I know this to be fact, so don't even bother disputing it. You are a massive fanboy and your opinions have been rendered useless because of this. Your posts always have a sense of "I think I'm smarter than every one of you and I want to prove it" but I can't imagine you being more than just a complete loser.
That said... I think the 360 looks nice. Not quite wonderful, but nice enough. I surely think it looks nicer than the current-gen consoles and as long as the guts are up to shape, it's definitely not an eye-sore, so I wouldn't be opposed to picking one up, depending on whether or not the PS3 has more to offer me. No mention of the Revolution because Nintendo products have never interested me and unless they really blow me away, I doubt that'll change this time around.
Geez @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Frankly, unlike others I generally stay away from commenting on a system I don't use - I see no point in all that trolling rubbish and calling things crap, shame the other commentors here are so immature as to do so regularly.
This is big news, something that I wished to comment on as I may buy the system and you stoop to the level of petty insults, good on you. The Blake 7 reference is very akin to what the staff do here (like the recent Jet Set Willy one, I think it was), random insults like calling me a "clown", "loser" or "fanboy" only shows one thing - your level maturity and debating skills. Trying to moot my comments just proves this, try rebucking with fact or logic instead of name calling and attempting to wipe my comments from the slate - the fact is I bet you can't so stoop to school kid insults as that is all you have.
As for my comments, I'd say I ended with a positive tone about this, I'm sure I recall stating that though the design is in my opinion poor this wont effect the quality of the games. You're just too wrapped up in using insults and launching flame attacks to realise this, and the evidence of this is here for everyone to see.
pOThOLDERS @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
OOOOOOOHHHHHH. sick em dirty, sick em! for christ's sake it's a videogame weblog. we're all dorks.
Frankly @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
The point is, you are so predictable that your comments no longer need to be made. As soon as I saw your name, I knew your comments wouldn't be favorable toward the 360 because you are so wrapped up in your love for another company. You contribute nothing to these posts but Nintendo fanboy love and therefore your comments have no worth. Everything you say stems from an obvious bias you have.
You have destroyed your own credibility by aligning yourself so far to one side of the spectrum of video game companies, so much that I would trust Bill Gates more to give me an unbiased opinion of the Xbox than I would you of any product. I would watch Fox News and value their opinion of president Bush before I would value your opinion on video games. You have every right to post what you want on here, so post on, but I think you might want to realize that anyone who visits this site frequently is likely to either skip over your posts or take them with a big grain of salt unless they are Nintendo fanboys or unless they want a chuckle.
And stop acting like you don't flame. You flame worse than most, but you try and disguise it underneath your pointless statistics and not-quite-rude-but-degrading comments. You are not smarter than the rest of us, so don't think we don't see past your shroud of feigned tact.
Timmy @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
the only thing i'm botherd about is that it will actually work for a good amount of time. i had a ps1 for years and it didnt ever break. when i got my xbox i had it maybe a year and the laser went and i had to get it f***in serviced what a waste of time and money..
Mike Scarboro @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
After reading the previous comments, it is terribly obvious that all the ps2 boys are out in force with all their impotent attempts to get xbox 360 since the first one came out and kicked the crap out of their pissy sony offering. You could poke a stick in a piece of dog crap, label it ps3 and they would lather all over themselves about how much better it was than the 360. Ignorance is obviously bliss...
Ashley Bennett @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
I was under the impression the big silver button was like a HOME button to bring you back to the main xbox dash so you could IM friends or get your media center groove on. Speaking of which, this is the feature I want to know more about most. If I am replacing my XBOX with XBMC on it with one of these, the media playback system better be good, (Including reading DVD-Rs)
Geez @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Frankly, the problem you have is you see a fan of a console with good opinions and instantly label them fanboys in a vain attempt to win the debate.
"As soon as I saw your name, I knew your comments wouldn't be favorable toward the 360"
Show me one, just one, comment from me about the 360 or XBOX that is negative toward the system. Go on waste your time, dig the archives, look at the recent leaks - and have fun.
"I am so attached to one company"
And you know this how?
News flash, I have bought nearly every single console created (even a 2 week spell with the XBOX, the only one I've sold), I even have the Amiga CD32, and have none of this alleged "Love for one company". Can you explain why I have both Sony consoles? Yes I am biased to Nintendo as they are my favourite company, but I certain;y do not have unconditional love for only one company!
Just because I stick up for Nintendo with logic you rebuck by calling me names. I haven't destroyed my credabiltity, you are trying to destroy it because when I use facts to "support" Nintendo you have no other option than to insult me, clearly you can't attack or question the facts - petty name calling is last chance saloon for you.
As for me thinking "I'm smarter than everyone", far from the truth. I just like using facts when someone, for example, calls Nintendo's death. Why should they die when they are the most profitable in the industry. This results in you trying to destroy my credability as you cannot argue against the facts. Does this make me smarter, no. I just so happen to know the truth of the industry and like to use it in the face of such repeated hatred toward Nintendo.
BDev @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
I think this new XBOX looks sharp! It's ridiculous to try to assume that because you don't like how it looks, you won't like how it plays (that's flawed, childish logic). I like how the PS2 looks but can't stand the way it plays, which is why I am a very proud owner of an XBox. I eventually bought a PS2 and a Gamecube for my kids (to keep them off the Xbox) but guess which one everyone in my house loves to play? You guessed it, the XBox. Nintendo did a great job with the gamecube, by the way! I used to be a PS fan until I noticed that MS was offering me more value for my money than PS. I'm going to assume that MS is going to continue with that trend so I'm anticipating sticking with them. Why don't you Sony "fanboys" go toot your horns on THEIR channels? If the Xbox trend continues (value, games, etc; etc;), the Xbox-360 will be a welcome addition to my home entertainment center. I don't like much of what MS does (with the pc) but I love what they are doing in the console arena.
C @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
I can't believe you guys get so worked up over game companies and bias. Its quite funny in a way, but mostly just sad. Tale about stooping down to a low level.
C @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
As far as the actually system goes, I like it. At least someone has the balls to actually do something different, and hopefully they have full skins for the thing so it will stop all the bitching over "it won't match my other components". And even if it does look like a piece of crap to you, it doesn't change how the games are going to play and look. Thats what I loved about the first Xbox, the games played great, the PS2 was good for about a year, but when the xbox came out it just put sony to shame. But enough of all this talk, I need to prepared to get flamed :|
Pasha @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
lot's of very good and constructive comments, aren't there? (yes, i am being sarcastic)
how often do you look at the console when you play? It all comes down to the games. And i don't care how many precautions they take, they will hack it. Will take time, but it will be done. Give it year, you'll be able to buy a modchip for it.
Geez @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
"I can't believe you guys get so worked up over game companies and bias. Its quite funny in a way, but mostly just sad. Tale about stooping down to a low level."
Nah, I wont be flaming you as in all honesty you're right. I should have just ignored the stupid insults, but it's not what I come online for.
"and hopefully they have full skins for the thing so it will stop all the bitching"
Couldn't agree more, the only one I'm intersted in is silver, like the previous leaks sported. But those "wacky" one's in the story covering the on button aint my style.
I just hope they have a silver skin in the box, if not I'll be forced to buy one, providing I pick up a 360 when the RPG's hit.
C @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
yeah, I actually liked the silver leaked photo better too. if microsoft won't make full skins for the thing, i'm sure someone will. those button covers are really tacky, i can't see anyone actually picking those up, unless they came free.
Mark @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Its what's in the box rather than what's outside. Still finding it difficult to comprehend how they can fit in the wireless system, etc and also have the disc drive and HDD so close to eachother... what about the heat generated?
Frankly @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
I don't think people hate Nintendo. I think people hate fanboys. There are people who don't like Nintendo's products and get flamed whenever they voice their opinion because of fanboys. Fanboys tend to degrade people who don't agree with them and it angers some people, me included. I don't hate Nintendo. I don't care enough to hate Nintendo. My issue is with the way fanboys attack others for saying what's on their mind, and you got a taste of that when you voiced your opinion on the Xbox 360.
I apologize for the namecalling, as it was done in frustration, but the first thing I thought when I read your post was, "If this was the Revolution, Geez would be praising it" and I stand by that. That's the problem with bias. It creates a sense of a lack of credibilty. Praise something based on its merits, not on its brand name. I would like to know if you can seriously say that you would have posted the same comments if this was a Nintendo system. If the answer is no, your bias has (at least somewhat) tainted your credibility. If the answer is yes, my feeling is that you are lying to us and yourself.
Sorry, but I just get very annoyed when people spout out their "opinions" about something when what they are really doing is taking sides. I guarantee the majority of those who came on here and bashed the looks of the 360 were Sony or Nintendo fans. And by no means am I a Microsoft, or Xbox fan. I just think the system looks pretty decent.
pOThOLDERS @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
these posts are making my penis soft. i still just wanna know if the thing is backwars compatible, its the only thing stopping me from buying any of the new xbox titles like jade empire or conker live. damn you microsoft! such a tease....
