It seems to be the case. This game really doesn't look that much better. I've made up my mind, I'm totally with Nintendo's philosopy now. I just don't feel hyped for these systems if all their going to give me are so called "next generation" graphics. Bring on the innovation, please.
It amazes me that we've got all this amazing graphic technology and they're using it to make boob jiggling more realistic. The lighting effects in the first shot look good though.
These are great screenshots, the only problem is that DOA3 (and DOA Online) looked *too* good for a first generation Xbox game. There wasn't much more they could do besides add cool depth-of-field and more detailed backgrounds. But your average person won't be able to tell the difference.
I almost feel like the console business is becoming more like the PC business. You're essentially getting the same games, but your putting a new graphics card, or whatever into your console. This is ridiculous. I feel like Nintendo was right all along. I'm dead serious. A system, with it's main "innovation" being better graphics, simply won't justify my purchase of another console. Hopefully there's something more Microsoft has up their sleeves besides better graphics and Xbox Live.
First off the pics look great, and I have played the hell out of the dead or alive series. Of course the graphics on those were amazing , however these just take them up another level and will be amazing at 60 frames per second on HD. I wish you retards who complain no matter what would stop, these pics look like cgi, not good enough for you, I guess we could go back to sega cd and control full motion video again. When you see this stuff in motion, I promise you it will be amazing stuff! My only concern is that the gameplay wont evolve!
If it ain't broke, don't gimmick it up. Feel free to make it prettier, though -- I'll gladly take more of the same, only better and in HD. Give the developers the ability to render 10x the polygons and the horsepower to create better AI, petter physics, track more objects, keep more objects on screen, etc and they will use it. Innovation is sometimes good, Progression is always good, more power is always good.
Hey idiots... this is an early build of the game and it looks better than DOA 3, this is a working title.....hey if you havent relized a game looks this good and the system has not even been released yet.
Afraid I've got to agree with the above statements that this doesn't look too hot. Yes it is an improvement on the previous generations but would that extra bit of graphics really persuade me to purchase the game (again).
I agree that the graphics arent leaps over the previous games because the older ones are awesome already. With that said, the new engine looks awesome, I am most interested in new environments, characters and whether they enhance the gameplay. The graphics will be awesome when you are playing it, trust me!
First off, they look noticeably better than DOA3. More importantly - these are little screenshots! I feel sorry for you 27" CRT owners out there, because yes, you will barely see a difference. But on my 55" widescreen HDTV, the difference between DOA3 480P and DOA4 720P will be HUGE. Can't wait...
Did you guys look at the full size images or just the little tiny pics posted here at joystiq?
In the full size image it is clearly better than DOA 3.
I went and did an A - B comparison of DOA 3 and DOA 4 graphics. You should do the same if you think there is no difference. There is a huge difference.
Although I do admit it seems we're nearing the point of diminishing returns. The difference between DOA 2 and DOA 3 was more dramatic (IMHO).
Once we start playing console games with a 720p, 16x9, large screen tv, I don't think anyone will complain. Except for those who ALWAYs complain about better graphics but worse game play (as if gameplay is really getting worse).
This could be the generation of consoles that keeps me off of my PC for gaming entirly. I currently still boot my pc for half life 2 and RTS games though.
Praise God! the last couple of posts actually have some sense behind them, they are small pictures for gods sake. Half Life 2 is not fully realized unless you actually see it moving and being played on a nice monitor. I thought doom graphically was the bomb until I PLAYED half life 2. DOA 4 will rock!
Well, Microsoft is not going to help the situation since XNA claims to support PCs, Xbox, and Xbox 360.
Microsoft also says cross-platform development is the way of the future.
On a similar move, EA bought Renderware, which helps developers build cross-platform games.
So, it seems all games will end up being designed and developed against the least common denominator.
Publishers love the idea since it allows them to sell 1 title on all platform.
Gamers, on the other hand, will be sorry.
I guess I am the only person left on earth who wishes for original gameplay, graphics, story telling...developed for some highly specialized hardware that makes no compromise for the sake of commercialism.
Digi: 1280 x 720 pics -- probably are for the 360.
I think the biggest advantage of the new consoles will be seen by those with hi-def sets. You simply cannot appreciate the difference in quality of graphics unless you have one. Even screenies of old games look better here at Joystiq than they in real life because of the difference in resolution.
If the Playstation 2 was partly responsible for the acceleration of DVD acceptance, I think these next gen consoles will do something for hi-def as well. Not on the same scale, mind, but certainly encourage gamers to upgrade their TVs.

If you broaden your target market in theory you should be able to make more innovative games.
If 5% of Game Cube owners buy a game it's probably not going to be profitable. If 5% of everyone with a current console or high end PC buy the game it might be worth making.
Dralt, I am there with you. I fear for this generation, and I'll tell you why. I think once the initial shock of the graphics wear off (which in my opinion won't be long), people will start to realize that they are essentially playing a game they've played before. Is anyone with me on this? Dead or Alive 4 for goodness sake. The videogame market is extremely saturated in my opinion. I think we actually need lots of originality. People will start to get bored of games. I'm sure some of you must feel this way. Isn't anyone craving for something new, something different. Original. Like what you felt when you first saw Super Mario 64. Or when you first played the original Mario Brothers. I don't feel that anymore. I want too, but I don't know. Anyway, I know I'm definitely going on a rampage. But it must be said, our industry is saturated. And you know what, I think the Japanese feel this is true. Just look at the sales chart. DS is selling pretty good, but generally speaking. Anyone else here craving for something original?
Guys, just wait until perfect dark 2 is revealed tonight...the new coop mode will blow your mind, even if the graphics aren't unreal 3 quality. Project Gotham 3 will make up for that.... Also, I hear the xbox360 hard drive issue has a very interesting solution that explains why Bill Gates is always ranting about multimedia centers and PC integration.
looks like this is for the 360, in the 7th screenshot, in the wrestling arena, a scrolling billboard says (looks like) "Congratu(lations?) (on??) the Xenon launch!!" Xenon. heh.
http://www.gaming-age.com/cgi-bin/img.pl?image=/media/2005/may/doa4/7.jpg
Pete, have you seen the new perfect dark, how do its graphics compare to half life2, or are you just guessing, thanks just curious, really excited for that game. By the way, dead alive 4 looks awesome and it is a good jump from number 3!
i havent seen perfect dark...just heard details about it. supposedly the version showed tonight will be a lower resolution but playable version of it...the final version might look better.
I am supposed to get excited about DOA 4? How about DOA 24? Or Halo 36?
Even reputable studios rehash the same numbers nowadays.
A few months ago, I played the original KOTOR. It was fresh and I had fun.
Then, I tried KOTOR 2. After 2 hours of gameplay, constantly feeling I had already played that game before, I felt I was forced to complete a sickening chore.
Recently, I picked up Jade Empire...and it feels like KOTOR in China.
All of these games have great technical merits, but past the original, sequels and transpositions are boring.
If better graphics is all I am going to get from the next generation consoles, I will wait a few years before I buy a new one.
I am not interested in playing Halo again, even with better graphics or in HD. (BTW, I have had much better than HD on my PC for several years already.)
I am not interested in playing Project Gotham again, even with better graphics or in HD.
Etc.
The industry needs to get over the glitz of technology and go back to producing titles that are fun and titles that bind with you at the emotional level.
I fear that Microsoft, by creating a mass market for video games, is going to transform the video game industry into Hollywood and its complete lack of creativity.
I never wished to be wrong as much as I do at this instant.
How weird that this has again become a Nintendo discussion! I only hope that, whatever their Revolution is, they don't start revolting against their second parties. If they do that they'll go the way of Sega.
And I don't care if DoA sucks. I probably won't buy it anway but it looks GORGEOUS. And not just the boobs either!
Microsoft?? ummm I think sony went hollywood with the release of PS2. hyping the emotion engine to something that was from god. and then we saw the games and said oh its o.k..
