"Why does it have more than one ethernet port?"

This is the interesting question of the day. Note that 2 are "outputs" and 1 is an "input". Note also that all three are gigabit connections.

I'll leave you all to scratch your heads over that one. I think Sony's got some things planned that we have not yet considered.

Sony Pictures=Spiderman Movies=Spiderman Font on PS3. In all seriousness, I have to agree that it looks nice and all but its the games that matter in the end. Both Sony and MS have great games on their respective systems. And when Nintendo gets off its butt, it makes great games too. The fact is, if you're a serious gamer (the only kind that matters), you'll probably end up buying all three consoles anyway (I did for this past generation). To align yourself with a major corporate entity and to root for them is just plain idiotic and kinda scary if you think about it for moment. Specs and form factor are nice, but they don't mean anything w/o the games to back them up.

VJ, in my opinion, you lost. Except for the controller design. The PS3's controller looks extremely odd, but then again, it's wireless, so the battery pack is in the handles I guess.

I like how the bill gates lovers make these crazy arguements against the ps3 like "1080p? no one has that therefore it sucks" or "its ugly" or "the controller looks like a boomerang." This coming from the same crowd that made the argument that they play the xbox for the power and graphics rather than the way the console looks. Cmon people, make some legit arguments.

PS3 looks tight, i mean, would Sony really release anything without showing about 400 focus groups first? On the othere end of the spectrum, performance-wise it nails XBOX360 to the front of a Mack truck. What I want to know is what kind of GAMES they will actually put out? Will hack-and-slash, RPG, and the thousand other standard formulas stand up to the "Nintendo Revolution"? It's hard to say considering that all we know about "Revolution" is that thousands of fake pictures are on the web. What has Sony done to safeguard their market-share other than put a bunch of big-numbers and colorful charts on the wall at E3?

Has Sony ever heard of ergonomics? That controller has got to be uncomfortable. And if you're going to redesign controller, why not put the left control stick in the proper place?

one word: overkill.

i heard people criticizing the xbox 360 for having too many features and not focusing enough on the gaming...well the ps3 looks to be worse. sure the processor may be faster on paper, but i'll wait to see results before making any judgements. also, the price on this thing has got to be above $500...

cons: controller, no hard drive, a year later than xbox 360, borderline too many features, price?

This is the interesting question of the day. Note that 2 are "outputs" and 1 is an "input". Note also that all three are gigabit connections.

Let's not forget that your next Toshiba DVD player or that new Sony 1080p HD Cinema Display or who knows what may sport a Cell or 2... particularly over the next few years. (Remember: Microsoft is DESPERATE to beat SOny to market. Whereas Sony is more concerned with getting the infrastructure in place to sell this device for the next 5 years at least.)

I would imagine that in order to harness any of that computing power efficiently over a standard home network GigE with the PS3 acting as a switch will be necessary.

ok, i dont know if any one remembers but a long time ago Kutragi said something about parallel/distrubted processing. he said something along the lines that all the cell processor connect 2gether (for examples all systems online at same time) could contribute to other systems to increase resource if their system is idle or not less busy. i just hope that these specs r not hype and sony can achieve the numbers they promise. the remote looks sort of fake but atleast the system is not an ipod ripoff (aka 360).

As far as I understand it, 802.11a is much more efficient in an environment with multiple competing 2.4 ghz signals (pretty much all of our houses). And can you guys believe that there still is no mention of what the playstation 3's online service is going to be like? I extremely doubt that it will be able to match the spit and polish of the xbox360's service, especially if it is still free.

@162

I'm betting that's a screenshot for the Xbox360 actually. Check out the 16:9 format plus the green X in the lower right. It also makes sense that it is on the Xbox360 because since it is coming out sooner than the PS3, the developer will develop the version of the game for the Xbox360 first, and allow us to have screenshots now.

#202: Yeah, this thing is connection central. Seems like they've got the same "hub" idea as MS and the X360 - but built in Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g, 6 USB sockets, and 3 gigabit ethernet connections... blimey! I think the only thing it's missing is iLink/FireWire...

Gigabit ethernet also leaves the possibility open for clustering these beauties - especially with the Cells distributed design! I wonder.....

Okay, let me just make something clear, I think the ps3 design and the controller most definatly blow. whoever thinks that the xbox 360's design is worse than there is somthing wrong. people say the xbox 360 had a bad "official Launch" well sony has not done a great job either if even nearly that. the first time we have heard ANYTHING about it has been today, when microsoft has been planning and releasing info slowly to get the hype up. Xbox 360 doesn't look PERFECT either but the graphics will probably improve. I just had to say this b/c i have been sitting here reading the comments and who-ever bases that they will or wont buy the console on its design is insane, this is only the begining and everything will get better. and please sony change the controller it looks horrible. a change in the system design would be nice too...

HERE IS THE THING!

it takes game developers 6 week to create a character. the PS3 is to say the least much to powerful for what is available today.

you will not see any games to come out that will take advantage of the PS3 spec until 3 years from now (not full advantage)

the xbox 2 is being more realistic in the sense that the kept with today technology, meaning we will see some great games soon not 3 years from now.

Sony releases a console to last 7 years xbox releases a console to last 3 years.

I will buy the xbox NOW play games NOW, then when they drop the price on the PS3 then I will get it. simple math no point in getting a console that games will not take full advantage of.

look at the history of Xbox and the PS2, PS2 was here first but everybody loved the xbox because it had newer graphics. same thing will hap again except roles will be reversed.

sony would not go and take a big risk in changing the ps pad if they did not feel it would be better

the current ps pad is the best pad in gaming history. Proven by its transition from ps1 to ps2, by keeping the design the same

before we judge the pictures i think we should wait till it rests in our hands or hear the good advice of reputable reviewers.

though looking funny, and yes like a boomerang, i have a feeling this will be the next best gaming pad.

Anybody that says stupid, fanboy comments like "performance-wise it nails XBOX360 to the front of a Mack truck" need to read up. At best, the ps3 might have a slight edge on the gpu front (I realistically consider any edge that the Cell give the PS3 over the xbox360 to be overwritten by the difficulties inherent in the new processor design). We're talking raw power here people. Very few game will ever come close to the limit of either of these system's possible performance.

As far as the ps3 design being more original than those grubby microsofties stealing the color white from apple, DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH. They stole the font from one of their own movies and the basic design itself from bose.

Seriously, waht does Form-Factor really do other than decide how big a breath you take when u pull it out of the box? I have all three of the last-gen systems and they sit inside the TV Stans behind a piece of tinted glass. Performance-wise PS3 and 360 look pretty much the same, not a difference that would sway me too much. One deciding factor is games, Devil May Cry 4 vs Halo 3 is gonna be tuff for me as well as a few other select matchup.
But
Their is one thinng it seems as if most of you are forgettingn and thats Nintendo. Kiddy or not, "gaming revolution" is some seriously loaded language, and that's going to have a big effect on general sales, not to mention my own personal choice. Without the third major party's console even up for review yet, it seems kind of pointless to compare PS3 and 360.

Yes design is important but in the ps3's case it comes second to performance and this monster can perform. I, for one, isn’t waiting or won't be impressed when the design shots are posted. I want to see what this bad boy can do on the screen.

I will definitely be getting one when it launches. As for Xbox, never played never interested in it and I don’t think I’ll get the 360 either. I think I’m getting to old to be interested in videogames (23 on the 21st). Right????
