Well, I like the design, and I never really liked the PlayStation.

The controller is shaped the way it is because it recharges by throwing it like a boomerang... You have to throw it every 5 minutes so you get exercise. Duh...

I saw it in a Sony press release somewhere....

specs are all i care about, looks help. By looks alone it belongs in a mature set up. Who cares about controllers, there so many different designs by 3rd parties it not matter which one comes with it. By specs along and the game demos i would say its the best one out so far(and no i not a fanboy i own a ps2, xbox and cube).

I continue to have extremely high hopes for the Nintendo system. I can't imagine having either this, or the X Box in my living room. Give me something small, unobtrusive, and with great games and you've got my money, Big-N!

Oh and yes i am a XBOX fan-boy, but comon that is the ugliest piece of shit controler i have ever seen. even uglier than the origional xbox huge controler.

Wow, the specs are immpresive!

But as for the design...I think the concole itself looks good, a nice futuristic shiny look. But come on, that controller in a joke. I like the look of the 360 and the PS3, i like the 360's controller, and hate the PS3's...HEY SONY, does your controller come it YELLOW!? hehe, somebody had to say it.

If they are going head 2 head, then the PS3 is looking more impressive, the 360 cant even record tv and will have a 20gb hard drive, the PS3 will have a (rumored) 160gb, and it will be able to record tv...and it will even have Blu-ray, while Microsoft didn't incorrporate ant tv tuner or Blu-ray or HD-DVD. Not sure which one I like more at the moment..a bit to early to tell.

I'll defiantly be awaiting to see what Nintendo's Revolution has to offer.

I still like the controller though. But the sweetest part? 1080p, thats high def defacto. 360 has high def also.

How is the PS3 ugly? Man, it's the best thing I've seen in a LONG time. The xbox 360 was just HORRIBLE...this has nice sleek curves and a good color choice (black, white, and silver! :P)...I want one!

360 will rule the world. Playstation broke ALL the hopes with their design. No question that Microsoft will take sony down. During 04-05 Christmas sale xbox took sony by sales. When XBOX first came out sony said that xbox will never beat it by sales. Sony was out there for a while but its time to move on to xbox 360 ! Good try sony, good try

#71, UHG, I have never seen that angle before, yuck, looks like you would have to lift up the console to plug a USB device into it, I dont like that overhang look at all.

#79, Are you sure...I've read that it will have a hard drive, and it will be 160gb.

i love the console design. although i really wish they'd stuck with the old Dual Shock 2 controller design. i don't dig the futuristic look too much. what i loved about the classic style was how modern it was, not trying to be some slick spaceship controller.

oh well, the controller is still sexier than the Xbox's piece of crap.

now all i have to deside is whether i want it in platinum or black.

OMG i'm soo disappointed... i wanted to buy this and was gonna start saving up part of my allowance for it... now i'm not too sure... i think the console itself isn't such a mindblowing design like the first 2 ps'z but the controller makes me wanna use the original xbox one instead... i juss hope there are 3rd party designs of the old controllers... i wouldn't mind having to use the wires... o yea and i don't know if anybody has seen these already but my god if they made it look like this i'd pay 2000 bucks for it:

Sure by now, everyone has seen the XBOX 360. If you make some serious design comparason with the PS3... The PS3 is way way better looking. Sure the controler is a little weird, but look at the box... gee. I haven't seen something this good looking for a while. PS3 rocks

About all of the guys making non logical comments about the controller have you guys actually held it in your hands??? prime example will be the TIVO REMOTE look at it it looks like crap at first sight but turns out it has the great ergonomics when held in your hand.. god some of you guys are ****** companies as big as sony put R&D on products esp on a flagship product like the playstation japanese product designers are top notch so don't bitch unless you actually played and experienced the console you guys need to grow up or at least read more and i mean a lot!!.. geez..

If it's so much better ergonomically, why is it so different than anything else out there? Has every other controller (including Sony's previous ones) been crap for ergonomics? This just sucks. I couldn't wait for the Sony debut of PS3. Now I wish they had kept that crap to themselves. PS3 sucks in terms of design. It already looks dated. Then there's the fact that you can't stack anything on top of it because of that stupid hump shape. I guess it's Sony's lame attempt to be on top of all your electronics and in plain sight of everyone. Sony should take a page out of Microsoft's book and offer different skins but not just some stupid sticker but a whole new box to put this wonderful hardware in. Then there is that horrendous controller. Honestly now, who is in charge of this crap? Someone said lesbian play toy and I'm starting to agree with them. Don't think that I'm all head of heals for X360. After looking at these specs the 360 looks a little underpowered, but we'll see when actual games start to show up. And its packaging also sucks. What is wrong with a simple design, like the PS2? I must say that the controller for the 360 actually looks comfortable and intuitive. I wonder if I will be could use the 360 controller for PS3. It will never happen but I can dream.

Okay let me ask you this have you seen a remote that's is like the TIVO REMOTE umm.. no.. have you seen s remote that feels as good as the TIVO REMOTE?? once again no.. and i am not a fanboy i just don't just something by the way it looks i make educated guesses and look at every possible angle not like some of you guys and if you hate it that much then don't buy it! its that simple.. i bet if someone offered you either the 360, revolution or PS3 you will ultimately pick the PS3 without hesitation...

I think the black version kills all. And while I think the controller looks a little lame (Boomerangs and sex toys, huh? So you can draw a visual comparison, my kids can do that much), I will wait to see how functional it is before dropping any final judgements.

...And how many times have I heard Xboxers hate on PS2 specs? It's going to be nice to see the tables turned.

console or PC , *THE BACK*, it looks like it has

Ethernet
Modem (x2? one a pass thru for a telephone?)
Optical (Digital) audio out
USB (x2)
Sony A/V Connector
HDMI (x2).....
....Dual HDTV ouytput anyone ???? !?!?!?!?!?!?

(or do I smell HDMI in/out for fancy video processing?)

Wow, well they finally did it.

Sony managed to make a console so GENERIC looking, so typically consumer-electronica styled that they've alienated the gaming fanbase they've established.

Plus, that controller looks aborted from the ASCII LABS tech department.

After all is said and done about the design,the real make-or-break will be the ease of programmability. As im sure you have heared, the ps2 was a nightmare to code for compared to the xbox. ps2 games slowly increased in graphical complexity as developers learned how to get the most out of the ps2. The xbox plateaued very early as devs learnt how to get the most out of it very quickly (due to its familiar architecture). Now hears the thing: CELL. Its the ps3's strongest asset, but potentially its greatest liability, if it proves to be a nightmare to code for. I have a strange feeling that two powerpc cores (or whatever the fuck the 360 has) will be a hell of a easier to code for than the unique eight string (?) CELL. I just hope im wrong though, because i beleive the ps3 has a lot more potential. Thats your hardware lesson for the day folks, now let your teacher drown his sorrows in his expensive imported brandy.

It is not "beautiful (for the mature adult)". I'm nearly 30 and I think it looks like what would happen if my toaster mated with my waffle iron. Ugly as hell, and I can't place *anything* on top of it.

Nokia gave us the taco.. and Sony gave us the Silver Banana.

You can bet a year from now, at next year's E3 Sony will be unveiling a completely different design.

Hohohoho... Sony sure did a number this time. This is the ugliest thing I've ever seen for a console since the N64 and 3DO. It won't fit nicely next to anything, since it doesn't have the form, unlike the flat-ness of the PS2. Perhaps it was their idea that it should be so awkward that it can't hide anywhere (and who's honestly going to have this lying flat?)?

Not only that, but Sony has gone ahead _again_ and ripped off more design ideas from Bang & Olufsen. Someone should seriously sue them.

Not only that, but you can't trust a word Sony says when it comes to performance. PS2 supercomputer? So powerful terrorists could use it to develop weapons of mass destruction *cough*? Emotion engine *cough*? Perhaps they should have said it was powerful enough to destroy its DVD drive. Hehe.

The gamepad? WTF? They started with the best gamepad, now they've got the worst one, which resembles much of an oooold Microsoft PC gamepad that used to be.

Ah well, atleast this time I won't feel a pang of regret when I buy the XBOX 360 or Nintendo Revolution (hopefully that will be a lot better than this, although it would be hard not to). Not only does the PS have most of the worst, most mass marketed and sequeled games, but it has the worst console design and gamepad. I don't care if it can handle even 1.5 teraflops. It's the games that count first, then gameplay and aestetic convenience.

Hell, the Dreamcast even beats this by miles. Somehow I am in disbelief that these pics are really real. It's too fukked up!
