Live from E3: Day One - PS3 and Xbox 360

1- 1 CELL running at 4 GHZ, providing 256 GFLOPS power ( 1 PPE ( L1 cache 32 KB, L2 cache 512 KB, and 8 SPE each one having 256 KB )

2- there is 2 I/O ( input/output ) on CELL, to communicate with other parts of the console, the first I/O of the CELL has the main purpose to communicate with the unified shared (between the CELL and the GPU) XDR Ram memory ( from RAMBUS) at a 50 GB/s bandwidth ( 4 * 64 MB = 256 MB of memory )

3- The second I/O is called FlexIO ( flexible input/output ) and this allow the CELL to communicate with the next generation NVIDIA GPU at a 76.8 GB/s bandwidth ( this GPU with 190 million transistors will run at a 600 MHZ, with a 32 rendering pipelines, associated with 16 MB of Toshiba Embedded DRAM of 256 GB/s bandwidth) The CELL will help the GPU in creating advanced physics for particle effects.

4- retro compatibility with PS1 ( emulated by the CELL ) and PS2 ( emulated by the CELL )

5- a Hard Disk of 160 GO, Ethernet port ( no modem this time ), wireless, U**2 port, and a flash stick memory duo-pro support.

6- the controllers will not so much differ from those of PS2, with the main difference that they will be WIRELESS, and with better analog buttons and more varied vibration effects.

7- If the first CELL IBM produced prototypes are using 90 nanometer technology, the first SDKs containing the CELL that developers will receive after 2 months will be produced with this technology, but the CELLs that will be used on PS3 ( and later SDKs ) will be produced with the 65 nanometer technology, allowing sony to decrease the costs of PS3, and to tackle the problems of HEAT.

8- The PS3 will ship on MARS 2006 in JAPAN ( earlier than what a lot of people thought before ) there will be 2 versions of PS3, but only the first version will be shipped on mars 2006, ( at a price range of 299-399 $ ) with a read only blue-ray, and as mentioned a 120 GO hard disk capacity. The second version of PS3 will ship some months later, ( 399-599$ ) with a writer blue/ray, a 400 GO hard disk, for the main purpose of recording TV digital programs.

Date of releasing the PS3 on USA and Europe hasn’t been determined yet by sont but its believed that the PS3 will ship between July and October 2006 in USA and in late 2006 in Europe.

Also some one wrote that you can't connect the PSP to your PS3 well it's fact that you can cornect your PSP to your PS3

PlayStation 3 announced for 2006
[UPDATE 2] Sony confirms the name and release window of its next-generation console in Los Angeles, will use Blu-ray disc format.

LOS ANGELES--Today saw the second of the big three console makers announce their next-generation platform. At its pre-E3 press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment gave the world its first look at the PlayStation 3, as it now is officially called.

The name was not unexpected, since Sony had been running an extensive teaser-ad campaign prepping the public for the PlayStation 3. The company had laid a blanket of posters around the Los Angeles Convention Center, site of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (aka E3). Bus stalls and billboards around the convention center proclaimed "Prepare for Chang3" in the distinctive PlayStation font with partial shots of the Dual Shock controller's square-circle-triangle-X buttons.

Sony also confirmed the PlayStation 3, will use Blu-Ray discs as its media format. The discs can hold up to six times as much data as current-generation DVDs. It will also support CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. It also confirmed the machine would be backwards compatible all the way to the original PlayStation. It will also have slots for Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, and a compact flash memory slot. It will also sport a detachable 2.5 inch HDD.

Out of the box, the PS3 will have the capability to support seven Bluetooth controllers. It will also have six USB slots for peripherals--four up front and two in the back.

Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz and feature 2.18 teraflops of performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz.

The PlayStation 3 will also sport some hefty multimedia features, such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, digital audio and video. Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi introduced it as a "Super computer for computer entertainment."

Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. It also has over 300 million transistors, larger than any processor available commercially today. It was manufactured using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 ultras, which would cost rough $1000 if bought today.

We don't know much, but Sony promises that "Grand Theft Auto Next" will be a PS3 launch title. This information comes from some people at the Sony E3 2005 press conference currently in progress, but we've yet to confirm the report with our own editors.

We're hoping to high heaven that we'll get to see snippets of the game in the coming days.



Right now at Sony's E3 2005 press conference, the president of Sony Entertainment Europe is showing The Getaway on PS3.

Details are still coming in, but the early word is that the thing is bloody amazing and looks like no digital recreation of London ever has. While the demonstration was devoid of driving or shooting, the game did display some incredible character models walking about a highly detailed English environment. Now, if only the power of PS3 can work out that poor camera just a bit.

They also ran the computer generated Spider-Man model from the actual Spider-Man 2 movie in real-time on PS3. Amazing.

Some people like the Xbox and some like the Playstation, if you like to compare the 360 and the PS3 then be real.

Well look at the games that showcase the Xboxs graphics. I would say Doom 3, Ninja Gaiden, and Chronicles of Riddick are good examples. Now how many xbox games have graphics that blow compared to these games? My point is, most games never even live up to the systems potential. The differences are the tiny optimizations. With a more powerful system (both the 360 and ps3) the developers are more free and can get better graphics with out the optimization. Even if the ps3 has more power, they are resources that will largely go untapped and you will see multiplatform games will look equally good on both consoles. While sony has been so focused on the hardware, I think MS is seeing the bigger picture with the software and the services. Xbox live, custom soundtracks, ipod integration, media center pc integration, etc. I dont know how well MS will play their cards, but I can imagine pressing the X button in the middle of a game and bring up the dashboard. I could create a playlist of tracks from my ipod or stream music from napster on my media center pc, hit play and return to my game with a completely custom and dynamic soundtrack. This whole vision microsoft has of customization goes so much deeper than the faceplates and dashboard backgrounds, it is a completely unique, online, encompassing experience.

I'm officially, as of this moment, giving up on having a thoughtful discussion of these systems on Engadget. I thought it was bad after the MTV thing... man, it's gone all downhill from there.

Somehow I thought the intelligence level around here was a bit higher than it apparently is. Maybe these system announcements just brought all the dreck out of the woodwork...

On a second note I think that if it was not for Microsoft Sony would have still be giving you a poor gamestation. Microsoft is doing a good job at this and as far as peformance i think that the PS3 don't have much of an Advantage.

Some People Mentioned that the nVidia card is 550 mhz, 50 mhz faster then ATI. But if you were to know about this you wouldn't have talk up your ass... nVidia have competed with ATI before with a faster clock speed for the GPU and still ended loosing their throne cause that clock speed means nothing overall in performance.

FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE SONY STUPID CLAIM ON DELIVERING A SYSTEM AS POWERFUL AS THEY CLAIM IT TO BE AT A GOOD PRICE MUST BE SMOKING SOMETHING. AND AS FAR AS SONY STRATEGY IN SELLING ALL THEIR GOODIES FOR THE PS3 i am sure they are selling all of these things seperate including the hard drive and being that it is a Laptop Hard Drive it's going to cost you more per GB. Hey don't get me wrong here... the playstation specs are very impressive but are they going to DELIVER? I am most certain they won't.

I think that if they were to sell a processor as powerful as it claims to be at a cheap price then i'll buy one, heck I'll make all my new computers PS3. But considering that it's many times more powerful then a current P4 System and knowing that Intel P4 top processor go out for 1,000 dollars I doubt that this is true. It's only logical these specs aren't true, Unless they are into charity.

It's only going to get worse. I don't know why they even bother to keep the comments running when no one has anything structured to talk about.

It's sad, really sad shows you the intelligence of the people who play games. And I thought we were better than that.

Playstation's audience is people who like small powerful consoles with a ton of games and easy storage. This goes against everything that playstation has established itself to be. GO SMALL SONY!

Here are some thoughts:::

Add this up and come to a conclusion?

I personally believe that Sony is B.S.
you guys. First of to give more power than
the most top end PC must be incredible and
hard to believe. Consider the folling.

The nvidia Graphics card is more powerful
then 2 nVidia top end card combined for a
total cost of 1000.00 dollars but let's put
the price tag of 350 dollars.

The cell Processor claims to be so much more powerful
but since it's so powerful let's go with
an AMD X2 processor the fastest Desktop
Processor out there... and cosidering AMD
is economical then let's claim it would go for
700 dollars(but it sure cost more) but just for
this demo let's say it cost 700 dollars.

Now let's move into Blue Ray Disc and let's take
an example of the fist CD RW that first came out
back in the days that wrote at 4x that if i
recall correctly cost me 400 dollars for it's new
technology in the market but let's just put it
at a price tag for 200 dollars.

Going forth let's add the Hard Drive and if let's say
they add a 120GB as some claim goes then
that would add up another 100.00 dollars minimum.

So if you were to add the following then we get
1000+700+200+100 and that's not adding all other
neat features claimed. So the total would end up being
2350 dollars. If they want to compete they will have to
sell this System for 400 dollars... so then
for each system they sell they are going to be loosing
at about 1950 dollars per system. Let's go ahead and say
that they sell 5 million units. Their total lost would
end up being 1950*5million = total 10 billion dollars in
revenue lost...I don't think that not even microsoft with
it's big reserve of money would go ahead and do such a
suicide on a system that's not even successful and has
tuff competitors.

Remember these prices i put down are moderate to
what the real price would be. Heck if with such a
Powerful Processor and Graphics card i think that
they should go off with PC Gamer for hard core games in
the pc industry that are willing to shell out the cost
for such a power horse it claims to be and they would
actully make a profit. Hey if they pull this off
then i'm making myself my super duper computer to conquer
the world. Imagine the type of cluster you would be able
do with this. ha ha ha

Heck... all those companies looking for powerful servers
should look no more... the PS3 server is here... ja jaja
the race to conquer earth is on!!! and it only takes a
PS3!!!

One more thing if you are going to bash me please do so
intelligently. Please put shame to my face if you dare to
and give me a little enlightement on how sony is going to
make a profit at a good rate to cover their lost... cause
for sure games won't do it. With the game industry making

Wow fanboyism has reached a new level of ignorance.. The only advantage the original xbox had over the ps2 was the raw power, now sony and the ps3 has the upper end with power, matched with the same 3rd party support(if not more) as the ps2 , and finally the endless data capabilities with Blue Ray... well you have a winner. That's MS' biggest mistake, it's their choice of media. Believe it or not San Andreas actually filled up dvd9 and that's without the additional data of High Def throw-in. I'd be concerned too if I was a fan of the 360, but come on it's gonna take more than comments like "The PoS3 fagg0ts can stfu now" to steer potential buyers to the 360.

This thing is HUGE!!! I can't believe they went with that weird sort of mini tower holding up a saucer look! Is this what the Japanese think looks Next Gen. This thing is attrocious and I'm sure Australians will love the controller.

Graphics specs match Xbox 360, but 360 has faster unified Ram with the 10Meg on chip buffer which should give it a slight performance edge. PS3 has supposedly twice the amount of processing power. But really this won't matter much as Developers will always code for least common denominator which in 1 year or more will be the 360. Notice 360 has worldwide launc this year! Sony will surely release Japan first, USA second and Europe third. Sony is infamous for not being able to keep up with demand in just one region, so it may be over a year before Europe ever sees the PS3.
Xbox 360 world launch is a much bigger deal than most people are realizing. Means the Xbox 360 will be a household name for a whole year all around the world before anyone even plays PS3. Also 360 is playable at E3! It's real and tangible. I don't think PS3 will have any playable games at E3.

With the announcements of the Xbox 360 and the PS3 I just keep asking myself how much is this going to cost me?

$450 for the system
$60+ for game
$10-20 a month for online gaming

You're forgetting that Sony probably has bulk discounts. The prices which we buy things are vastly different from prices that resellers buy things, which are also vastly different than prices that huge giant corporations with multibillion dollar contracts buy things. I'm not doubting your claims that the Sony might be very expensive, but I dont think they are losing quite as much as you think.

Microsoft isn't the only company that can play hard.

The power of the Cell in the PS3 looks awesome and with Nvidia's GPU having twice the power of todays top of the range 6800 think Ps3 is on too a winner.I'm certainly looking forward to getting my hands on one.It has so much more to offer in terms of nex gen hardware compared to Xbox360 which hav gone done the safe method of off the self parts.

I was amazed by the PS3 duck & Spiderman demo's,impressive.

Also all of the programmers r saying how easy it is to program(now that is good news).

I kind of half expected microsoft to slap on an "extreme" sticker on thier console and say "hey everybody, its xbox to the extreeemmmee!!" That seems to be their design philosophy-- trying to blend in to the mainstream suv-driving, snowboarding, mtv-watching american culture. The name xbox alone seems to bring to mind some secret government blackbox project or something.. However, they wised up and tried to come out with a design that is more elegant. The problem is that it is still too cliche. They borrow lots of design elements from other places like making it white, standing it on its side, and giving it nice lights. They need to drop the xbox name and rebrand it and get creative with its design. Whats up with the whole "ring of light" thing? Is it some sort of reference to halo?

In contrast, sony is more creative. If you look at the ps2, its really not very good looking at first with it boxy shape and ridges running along its sides. But eventually everyone came to appreciate its uniqueness. IMO, high quality electronics should have a small form factor with good weight giving you the feeling of densely packed circuitry arranged in the optimal manner. I think sony succeeds in conveying a sense of quality in design, whereas MS falls short. Design-wise, I think I prefer the polished and refined look of the PS3 over the white plastic look of the xbox. I think over time, people will eventually appreciate Sony's design because its not as boring and cliche as the xbox design.

I like the PS3 design in Black the most. Though I am a huge X Box fan and will definetly be getting one. I feel the Japanese style RPGS like FF are so tired. I will make an attempt to get both. $ 780.00 I think you are mistaken , I doubt very much that the 360 will be that much and that the PS3 will cost what? 899.00 !!! That's crazy.

Why is it hype? Nobody can show any proof that it would be hype. The only claim that people here have is a that they dont beleive it which proves absolutly NOTHING.

Why isnt it hype you might ask. Well, I remember one time when I was visiting a datacenter back in the late eigthies and they had a VAX there. It could do 4 MIPS and by that time Acorn Archimedes had arrived and it could do that too. A DEC VAX had a price tag of a lot and the Archimedes had a price tag of very little. Same situation here. I like to call that PROGRESS. Have you seen the Cell CPU? Toshiba demoed it and they decoded 48MPEG2 SDTV streams and then scaled them and displayed them on a 1080p screeen and still had CPU power left on the Cell.
The NVidia chip is supposed to be twice as fast as a 6800 but its only a few MHz faster. Well, the Pentium 4M 2GHz is faster than a 3GHz P4 so why cant the G70 be faster? More stuff in it that makes it go faster, that is all. Doesnt prove anything with MHz.

I personally think PS3 looks super huge (and seems heaviest too?) and Xbox design looks just like SKY+ box (anyone living in UK will know what i'm talkung about). I can only agree that looks/design/powers etc etc mean nothing without GREAT GAMES!! after all we are still gonna call these 3 mediums "CONSOLES" as in video games system NOT multimedia system. Peace Out people, don't bash each other butt over your fave consoles! ;-) i believe, in the end, each one of the 3 consoles would have their own fanbase/markets.

The PS3 is the least impressive of the three consoles (Four counting the micro) IMHO. Not only is it huge. Like bigly hugely big! But the controller is an abomination.

People made fun of Microsoft when the Xbox came out and was super big and heavy. Now the PS3 it would seem has even the 360 beat in terms of size! And that controller, well, let me say it has the horrible DualShock beat in terms of looks. But maybe the longer arms will make it easier to grip. I dunno. Either way, it looks like a deformed N64 controller that lost its middle leg. Like evolution took its toll.

The Revolution on the other hand impressed me. 360, I'm pretty much on the fence. It'll have one game I want. Serious Sam. Not even Halo could get me to buy one. It just won't have any games I want. Such is life.

I think we have to wait for the games on both systems to really make an informed judgement. J Allard of MS has really dont a good job of improving on the orignal xbox. Lets give Sony a chance and see what they can produce... Who knows... Sony may suprise us all and release a better digital entertainment device bundled with a much improved online gaming experience... and release some outstanding games...

Who care what freakin' system will kick ass all know for sure working in the game industry for many years is that Sony is now the Nintendo what was in the 80's and MS Xbox is the Sega that was back then. Where is Nintendo? well they are in the verge that was Sega, loosing the battle badly. And might not last for another next gen. console. If Nintendo decides to grow up and starts making games for adults like Sony has been doing since it began than Nintendo will come back, kick ass and survived the game wars. Now for pricing, these companies know not to overprice their new systems. remember the video game crash in '84? do to too much expensive game consoles. companies didn't suvived because people wasn't buying them, too expensive. Nintendo survived because of one of the greatest games ever made, "Super Mario Bros." Sega knew they were in trouble so when Sega Genesis came out they threw one of the biggest blows at Nintendo with they amazing game called, "Sonic the Hedgehog". Guys, frankly i find it very disturbing that you all are arguing over something that is yet so far out of reach. Furthermore, E3 in it self is a concept designed to get people to create hype about these products and given that each company creates all these fancy productions about their consoles i have no doubt that there are obvious biases present. Obviously neither Microsoft or Sony is gonna come out at E3 and say that their console sux compared to the opposition. So it is only essential for them to exxagerate certain areas such as connectivity, or raw power. Now, I being a person who previously purchased an Xbox over PS2, am seriously beginning to have doubts as to my choice. However, I am not seeing it impossible to convert my views down the road. And if only all of us are willing to accept that both companies are respectable competitors the Console generation will come to a halt. Because ultimately, without competition amongst these companies, product qualities will indeed decline. So we should consider this very healthy. As for the design structure, we have to consider that neither Microsoft or Sony have created a design out of thin air. This has taken plenty of research and each design has been created to meet certain demographics and markets. Considering that the previous itteration of Xbox had most its sales North America, it is understandable that its new design will not be widely accepted in Japan. The opposite is true for PS3. Finally, I find it important to note Microsoft's plans of creating a Media based Centre in homes. This was even released during a press confrence by Microsoft, that they hope to create a network between all their products, this overlap is most evident in the Windows XP: Media Centre Edition. Moreover, it should be dually noted, that many of the features that the companies have output with their consoles are surely to be depedant on other factors. For example, much of Xbox360s Home Entertainment abilities depend on a link between your Xbox and PC. The same goes for PS3, where access to certain connectivity options mainly depend on its handheld counterpart, the PSP. Ultimately, the competition will be concentrated mainly around the games introduced themselves. Because no one is buying these consoles for the sole purpose of doing their HDTV recording chores. For that, there are PVRs and TiVOs. These additions to these consoles are only used as gimmicks and selling points to trigger sales. Because really, how many of us out there can say that we were not intreguied by Xbox's ability to play DVDs but never bothered to buy the DVD unlocking package? It is the same matter here. Now what would be impressive is consoles that are branded for their raw Gaming capabilities and not their glamour or over-kills. Nevertheless, no matter which console you choose, the replay value can only be defined by its backup support for the following years. Because who knows? perhaps by the next generation consoles, there would be no Xbox or Playstation.

right from the start i think this forumis flooded with xbox buoys..anywho i thin this time ps3 wins cause lik the last console wars ps2 had a headstart and that gave time to the xbox to make their machine more powerful INTERMS ONLY to graphics and stuff BUT in market share and available the public has spoken games, ps2 still won (NOW NO ONE CAN DENY THIS!)now xbox360 had a headstart obviously ps3 will be more powerful (in terms of graphic and all what the geeks are talking about..) but in terms of market and nuber of available games?only time will tell,maybe in the next 2 years we would all know...but i think as of now there are more games lined up for the ps3 (and more cooler!!...BLINX anyone that game sucks!!)
