The prototype we spotted back at CES was bit rough around the edges, but eMagin was showing off a new version of their Z800 3D Visor wearable virtual reality display, which sports a pair of 16.7 million color, 0.59-inch OLED displays which make it seem like you're standing 12 feet away from a 105-inch screen. Wearable displays are nothing special these days (we've gotten enough headaches to know that all too well), but the real gem here is that they've combined 3D stereovision with a fully immersive head-tracking system that provides a full 360-degree angle of view of the game you're playing. #50 is an employee of Icuiti, and is scared shitless of the Z800. This creep is everywhere spreading bad rumors about the Z800 because Icuiti is scared to death of eMagin's product.
I haven't personally tried the Z800 yet, but I have eyes and a brain-- it obviously has a a frame and strap setup that makes the unit a VISOR, not goggles. The visor sits on your head.
The USA Today article he sites was written in JANUARY, before the Z800 was even put into final production!!! And the "reporter" never even tried them on!!! The Z800 weighs only 227 grams, less than 8 oz. That is a fraction of any other HMD with similar capabilities, just look at the Cybermind's Visette 45SXGA, it weighs TWICE as much, and costs $9600! It doesn't even come with head-tracking for that price!
This "Melvin", "Ernest-T", whatever his name is basher from Icuiti is very desperate. Ignore him

Here are some pictures and videos I took at E3.
Many of which prove that the Z800 is easy to put on and DOES not pinch your nose if you adjust it correctly.
It COULD pinch your nose if you use it wrong.
Anyone who says it even touches your nose did not put it on correctly.

Studies show that vitual vision can cause dizziness, blurred vision, nausea and some researchers believe it can even cause brain damage. The sickness is related to the VOR problem that #36 referred to and that all VR googles have.

Joking, of course. Whoever is posting all this paranoia is a positive jackass, and I must agree with the previous rational posters that he clearly has some ulterior motive.
This is a very exciting product. I cannot wait to read the reviews.

stereo3D vision with nvidia driver just works
perfect but adjusting the glasses on the head is very difficult and i had to find a solution!
feeling the game whith this stereo is just amazing but i'm waiting for something since a long time :to change this ridiculous (26°) field of view to something like i use to have on my olympus eye treck ( 37,5°) !!
you have here a product with 40°FOV,new oled generation picture, tracking inside!!,less power just powered by usb!
do everybody here realise the chance we have to get all this for only 899$
just forget iglasses, icuity, visette...no one can be compared to this, the only question is do we have to wait till the 1280/768 will come this summer!
sorry for my english
thank you all.

I agree with #53 that virtual reality and use of HMDs can cause serious sickness called Cybersickness or Barfogenesis associated with the VOR problem that all HMDs have as these studies show:
h$$p://serendip.brynmawr.edu/bb/neuro/neuro00/web3/Pili.html
Barfogenesis : Does Virtual Reality Make You Sick?
Through the use of the HMD, joystick or glove, and tracking device, one can feel that they are truly part of this computerized scenario. However, within the nervous system, a conflict of inputs occurs and the person can experience cybersickness.
h??p://www-cahttp://www-cad.eecs.berkeley.edu/Respep/Research/weld/i
An Investigation of Simulator Sickness In Virtual Reality Environments
An investigation of simulator sickness was conducted to determine the level of discomfort experienced by individuals immersed in virtual environments depending on the quality of the tracker and the lag, frame rate, weight, and resolution of the head mounted display (HMD). Furthermore, issues of permanent brain damage caused by low-end virtual reality (VR) displays were considered in the research.
The effect of VR depends primarily on the amount of time and frequency that a user is exposed to it, as well as the quality and structure of the VR device. Sensory conflict theory proposes that the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is not in agreement. The theory argues that the eyes are receiving information which would indicate to the brain that there should be a corresponding vestibular response, which is absent, and therefore there is a conflict between the data being processed by the brain. Other discrepancies the brain must compensate for are latency and drag in the field being viewed. The argument is that VOR adaptation will occur, while in the short term the flocculus contributes most significantly to the correction, more long term effects of motor learning indicate changes made in the synaptic weighing of synapses on vestibular neurons. Some researchers believe there is new axon growth that incurs permanent brain damage in extreme cases of prolonged exposure.

I believe durability will become a major issue for the z800. It appears to me to be somewhat fragile in that the slightest lag will cause the "VOR" effect and there are a number of ways a lag could happen.

I'm sure any VR enthusiest is aware of any medical complications resulting from disorientation. I intend to buy the Z800. VR has been my dream ever since I played Dactal Nightmare in a VR store in a mall. From everything that I've read about other HMD's the Z800 sounds like the best HMD for the average consumer. The Field of view is greater than the i-glasses 3d Pro which sounds great to me for immersion. But I won't leave anyone hanging, after I buy one of these I'll be back with my review.

Sorry 61 , you're wrong....
The apparent size of the screen is created by the angle between the two optical axis of the optical system in the glasses for viewing the OLED panels. If they set the angle correctly so your eyes converge as if they were looking at a screen 12 feet away , then you'll have the impression of viewing a 105" screen at 12 foot. This is just part of the slickness of good headmounted displays.

Beware of the posters here from the emagin message board. They are long this stock and are a group of the biggest greedy liars you will ever encounter. They are easy to spot. Anyone encouraging you to buy this product without ever seeing it or even a authoritative review of it is probably a pumper from the ema message board. The stock is having a hard time and they will do just about anything to pump it.

I wrote their sales dept 6 days ago and was told that if I ordered that day I would get the Z800 in July and they were about to add some information to their web site. I wrote back right away asking a couple of questions I had after reading some of the posts on this list and also asked when in July I would receive the Visor. They have not replyed as yet. If this Visor turned out to vapor-ware which other glasses would people here buy?
i-glasses , cyber..... or ???

I must say i was very excited at first about this HMD. I have been involved in VR for several years now and it looked great. Now the problems.
1. Company has no clear cut release date and yet there taking orders. Sounds like a company fighting for air and needs to show interest in there product to get funding to produce the product in numbers. (Should be illegal)
2. Called every number available for Emagin and not one number produced a live person not even an operator. This again is a clear sign of a company without funding that cant even maintain one person to man the phones to give an air of legitimacy.
I am not an investor i just wanted to buy the Z800 and still will if the company can prove there more then hot air.
PS. Showing up at a trade show just proves you have a product it does not prove you can afford to market it.

Well, after scanning through thousands (well.. maybe only hundreds) of web sites reading about each different HMD in my price range ($1,000.00 plus or minus) I just ordered the Z800. From what the people who actually looked at them at the trade show say and seeing all the research and comparisons available, it seems the Z800 is a step above the rest. I don't work for them, I'm a retired Army Helicopter Pilot and a die-hard FS2004 player. There are others that pre-ordered so for those waiting to see, I will at least be able to review flying a simulator some time soon. If it doesn't work, my wife will kick my hiney.

James, A lot of people take vacations and this seems like a small company, so calling the day after July 4th might be hard to get a live person. I ordered one and it should be coming this week and have gotten good email responses from them to all my annoying questions usually within the day. Customer service has been very helpfull, not sure about sales since I ordered via the website.

I wanted to comment here again. Please, no one order the Visor just because I said I bought one. It may have been a giant mistake. There are people here that pre-ordered the Z800 that there might be a review soon. But who knows, some people may be connected to emagin and will write a positive review just to get others to buy. I'm getting one just to fly simulators. FS2004 and IL-2 FB. But if I get the Visor soon and write about it, do not buy one based on my limited use. Wait until there are several reviews from people you know before buying. I'm sorry if I came off sounding like an employee of emagin, or in any way connected to them. It never entered my mind that some might think that.

#66, I am an investor and watch the eMagin (EMA) message board on Yahoo. I have yet to see any long investor there urge anyone to buy the Z800. There is a lot of chat about how it can be used. What I do see is an organized effort by a group of people trying to demean the company and the product with claims that it causes VOR sickness and so on. You can see there posts here under phoney names like Dr Wilber, etc. Not all investors will buy a Z800, because not all investors are gamers or people who have use for an HMD. Reactions from people who have gotten their Z800s are pretty good--very good, I should say. A lot of these reviews are on the Yahoo eMagin message board and they aren't shy about discussing any negatives. So I don't think eMagin investors are pumping the Z800. We'd like to see an independent review by a respected gamer publication and, in fact, eMagin is distributing it to reviewers for that purpose... As for getting someone on the phone at eMagin, bear in mind that they are very busy and are finishing up moving some mgmt personnel from Fishkill, NY, to Seattle. They've also doubled their production staff in the last few months. Cutlass

OK, so after the dust settles and the z800 is finally on the streets then we'll know the truth, till then take these threads as "interesting" food for thought..
My opinion (and I'm in Australia) worlds away from the z800.. this product will kick ass .. it will open the quality of household THMD (trackable HMDs) Good to see a company like Emagin is willing to stick its neck out on the block ... and I'm sure they're onto a winner..
As for the Nausia etc. posts in here .. well hey if you're silly enough to ride roller coasters all day every day .. go for it ;)
oh and all the ridiculous talk about nose pinching haha.. what a joke .. you can pull my ears off for all I care. Maybe you should try scuba diving for a few hours and then you'll have something to compain about... With a secondary strap that loops over the head 90% of the strain would be deminished. So I really wouldn't listen to insignificant dribble such as that...
Sounds to me like organic displays with such a high refresh rate will be just fine regarding eye strain and fatigue...
Remember I'm sitting here in Australia and have been waiting 15 years for a half decent affordable THMD to hit the market and finallly here we go ... Yeahaa ! celebration time has finally arrived .. and yes I've tried so many HMDs over the years and going by the specs of the z800, this baby will blow all other competion out o the water as long as they can distribute and market this baby successfully.
OK, from what I've seen from the photos taken at the recent E3 demo booth the only wish I'd like to see added to the z800 at this time would be blinkers on either side to block out the distracting external light coming from either side. a set of blinkers would be nice maybe a simple accessory can be developed later down the track. Wow 3D steroscopic .. man what more could you wish for.. I'm just being too picky I guess ..
So hang on people maybe this time around we're in for a real ride
$900 US pfft.. if you got enough cookies in the jar already go for it I say ... otherwise chill and wait for prices to drop alittle (which might mean a long wait)

Mick, I think the OLED dislplays and head tracking will be an improvement but even the z800 will give a view not exactly immersive. The diagonal angle is 40 degree which is 30 degree on the horizontal . Definatly an improvement on the 20 degree horizontal of most of the others. If you want to get a feel for 30 degree viewing angle, measure the width of your monitor and hold your head at twice that distance to it. Not exactly immersive. I think real VR will start with horizontals from 45 degree and above ( ie hold your head away the same width as the monitor ) but for that you'll need much higher resolution displays.

Well it seems that there is some amout of 'dark PR' over here [ but i guess that people connected with Emagin are also here trying to encourage and get kinda flustrated when reading about pinching in the nose or sth). Anyway i had to do some reasearch on VR for my studies - and this VOR problem, as someone already mentioned before, is and really old one and noone had done similar research on such new high-tech models. The VOR was present on equipment that produced gfx far less realistic that that in DOOM ( usually single coloured textures put on simple models and such). Moreover some of those PH dudes worked for more than 3 years on it, spending countless hours in VR sets, ( if we exclude sleeping then sometimes more than in real life - it was their job :P ). So i guess that with modern technology this would take really serious nonstop gaming to produce similar effects. Sure if someone is sensitive they can occur even after few hours of gaming - but another few minutes in our world make it all good :P. However this info is based on VR testers comments, and i don't know how much more minutes would it take to recover if u will play it for 10 years. Also now we have these 3d stuff instead of plain 2d what may also help the brain to overcome VOR problems.
These are all objective info i can give. Subjectivly i don't really care for i think that sooner or later most of our activity will get tranfered to VR so i better get trained ;P
