Sony @ E3 - Live PlayStation 3 shots
It took a little wrangling since we didn't have an appointment, but we managed to blag our way into the backroom where Sony had three genuine PlayStation 3 consoles on display. Click on for a bunch more pics.
Note that the controller is just a Conceptual Design.

I don't see why everyone has all these bad things to say about the looks of it...I think the Xbox 360 is what complete crap looks like... the PS3 is gonna look dam good live I'm sure. As well, it'll perform twice as good as the Xbox 360. So what's the problem?
J-m0n3y @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
I agree with #29 alot.
and for you idiots out there, why would you stack such expensive consoles anyways.

Wow 81 and 76 are tards. The controller is a prototype (not final) and the console is better looking than nintendo's oversized SD card (AKA Revolution). just incase your a nintendo fan boy, which i bet your are

hey it kind of looks like the bose lifestyle receivers

for those wondering about the dimensions, i compared the power plug in the picture and managed to estimate the height standing up to be something like 45cm and the height lying down to be about 7cm. also, from what i've heard about cell processors, those things can run pretty hot. how loud will this thing be, considering they'll have to air-cool the unit?
ivan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
Some people have made their own measurements.
Well, here's mine, in Nintendo-approved "DVD cases". :)
About 9 DVD cases in a 3x3 array.
Check out the drive slot, it has to be roughly the size of a DVD, right?
The console should be 2-3 DVD cases thick and 3-4 DVD cases tall.
mistery solved.

So was this an empty box or what?
Show us the guts - no guts, no glory.
At least Microsoft had a working product there!
I can think of some intriguing uses for the Sony Banana.

I must admit seeing the PS3 in this "light" (All that sheen looks way sexy) has changed my opinion on how it looks. The controller still looks weird, but if comfortable then I don't care.
To all you people going on about "Stacking" ARE YOU MAD?? why would you want to bury this under a pile of amps, CD players etc!!?? I'm quite proud to admit I was the one person in the whole world who bought a PS2 Vertical stand and disply my PS2 on its own on a seperate unit (And even at a 45 degree angle so the logo can be read... sad, I know) ;)
My only definate gripe is that I think the L2/R2 butons should be changed to Analogue (Gas/Brake style) Buttons like on Dreamcast and XboX pads, or go one better and copy GC pads (Analogue, with a second digital button underneath that is pressed when threshold is reached).
Something I hope for is a QUIET running system too. Looks like the cooling fan (If any) will be placed in the right side of the machine (The top if placed vertically). PLEASE put a good quality low noise fan in there with thermal control Sony, I don't mind paying an extra $10 just for that.
I'm warming to that PS3 design!!! I wish Sony would make a shiny Silver PSP to match the Sliver PS3........
pat @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
Hmm, I think this is something Sony And MS should have collaborated on to knock nintendo out of the market.
One should have a convex box and one should have a concave box... So those two stack on top of each other and generally go well together. all the people who worry about looks out there would never buy a revolution because it just wouldn't go well with their other two new consoles :P
Rafaei a.k.a Raul @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
I don't really know what to say about this new design. They've made the PS2 smaller than it was before. I mean, couldn't they make this one smaller too? It saves time so that in the future they don't have to waste any more time to make new design of a newer and smaller looking PS3. Other than that, the controller looks a bit off. Did I say 'a bit'? I meant WAY OFF!
Pookie Ray Ray Johnson @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
All of you motherluverz complaining about the controller are killing me. How many of you complain about the shape of steering wheel in your car? Can't u see this controller has the same feel? DAMN PEOPLE it's just have a freakin steering wheel!
Portach King @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
"i really really really like the design of the console. would be great if they took the bubble off the top, so that it'd stack better"
It would stack perfectly with the 360.

First of all anyone planning on stacking these machines is dreaming, unless you want them to crash all the time. Both of them will need lots of ventilation and room to breathe or they will overheat. They both look good, I'm just pissed the 360 only comes in white, because I want my PS3 in black, and the 360 I think will look goofy with just the black faceplate, but I'll just have to see. But overall I think both designs are VAST improvements over the current gen--the X box is a ugly piece of crap, and the PS2 ain't far behind. Neither machine is all that big either, especially considering the amount of stuff they crammed into them.
As for the people complaining about the font, since when the @&*k did the gaming community become a bunch of typologists? Jesus, you'd think everyone here was an editor for the NY Times. Sony owns the friggin' font, they own Spiderman, so give it up. Duh.
As for the controllers, they look a little weird, but comfy, I'd have to try them to find out. If I don't like them I'll buy one from a third party anyway.
Overall, I am totally psyched for both machines both on the design side and in the amount of power they will deliver. I think Sony outdid themselves on the specs, and M$ has done a great job of courting developers and fine tuning Live, so I think they are both here to stay. Sony should remain on top, but 360 will give them a headache for the full run of this gen, especially since it should come in at a lower price point which should give M$ an edge early on.
But in the long run, Blu-Ray and nearly double the power will give Sony continued dominance. That said, Sony is likely to wind up with a comparatively smaller market share worldwide than they enjoy today because of M$ head start this time around. Nintendo is probably doomed to be a niche player for kids, but that's still a very large market and they'll stick around for a while too, which is good for everyone. Parents love Nintendo, they know their 5 year old kids can't play GTA on it and sticking with a below $200 price point is wise for them.
Anyway, now it looks like I'm going to have to wait for Sony to come out with 1080p LCD SHDTV with cell. I'm thinking they will do a full rollout in 2006 once the cell fabs are up and running. Guess I'm going to have to live with my 27" POS for a while. :(

Ashton @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
I like the overall design of the console, not so much the controller though. I also think the console is also a conceptual design by the fact it looks like they basically reused the PS2 design with a few simple modifications. I seriously don't expect it to look anything like this when it actually comes out. Though, no matter what it looks like I will still end up buying it because I'm a consumer whore... *cries over his empty bank account*

who else besides me is excited about the slot instead of disc tray?
Martin @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
The design looks okay. The controller needs work - it looks like the Batarang in the 1st batman with Michael Keaton - just set it and forget it!
The one thing that I'm surprised about is that none of their focus groups brought up the power switch on the back panel being a pain, or that enough people complained about it being there on the PS2. Hell, they even came out with an 'accessory' for the PS2 to allow you to access the switch from the front (a piece of plastic for about $20.00 - maybe that's the answer to the whole question. Hmm...).
Darren @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
I hadn't seen the PS3 in that light before. This is a seriously well made piece of playstation.
Whatever it is designed to, I doubt it will retain the exact mould in mid-2006.
The controllers I don't like-- but that's just personal taste isn't it? I mean, so what?
But I do like it. Not a lot. But I like it... it's just so...

ok this batarang mierda is getting old alright, the controller looks very modern, very comfortable, my hands are big and the handles on the ps2 controller where getting annoying. the indutrial design looks good, it does not look like an overambitious, cartoonish design like xbox360's

mt @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
I find it interesting, but not surprising, that the most vocal critics of Sony's industrial design are Xbox users. Go figure. If you were planning on buying that uninspired, boring, dull piece of kit I wouldn't expect you to have any sense for real design.
Let me guess, the iPod looks like a pack of cigarettes?
Joey Geraci @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
The size of this thing has been known for several days now from a comparison on gamespot, and they confirmed that this thing is significantly bigger than the original xbox. The controller looks ridiculus, and the people that are defending it reveal their stupidity. As far as the design of the two consoles (ignoring the ginormous size of the ps3), I think they both look pretty nice. There are aspects of the xbox design that I like better, (the curves, the color and the "ring of light"), and there are aspects of the ps3 that look nice (I like the font, and the slot load is sweet). Overall, games are what people care about, and Sony is definitely lacking in showing us what their console will be able to produce (it has been long proven by now that the killzone pics were produced by an animation and 3d studio), while the xbox has shown some amazing stuff that at least has not been proven yet to have been not ingame.
Joey Geraci @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
Do you have even the slightest bit of evidence that the majority of the people criticizing the ps3's design are xbox users? God where some of these ideas come from are beyond me.

Look everyone is critisising the ps3 but look at the stunning features with it which beats the xbos 360 by far. I know the controler may be different but at least its a change, imean the dualshock is my favourite console control but i wouldnt mind it modified, especially with it having bluetooth with up to seven players. the great thing about that is that you could put a cord to attach it to the usb and it re charges! how mad is that! The great thing about sony is they have the best games like gta always comes out on playstation first then later comes out on xbox and sony's bond with ea games has been great with so many great games to choose from. Sony learnt when they released the ps2, then the xbox came that they were in serious competition. Sony is a smart company too so they basicly have the same features of the xbox 360 but with way more amazing features. my favorite thing about the ps3 is it can play Bluy ray discs which is sony's 54gig(dual layer)disc. I like xbox and xbox 360 but sony ps3, youve outdone yourself. "SONY ALL THE WAY"
ScottC @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
I'm not going to buy a PS3 if they keep their logo the same as it is right now. As a graphic designer, my eyes start to bleed everytime I look at the ugly Spiderman font Sony chose. I think they wanted an edgy, hip look but instead it totally clashes with the design and looks retarded. I will always think Spiderman first and PS3 second when looking at it. Ever since Sony and its mindless legion of fans kept the Dreamcast from surviving (when it should have - if you disagree, you obviously can't appreciate truly creative and original games) I have been waiting for their market share to tumble. With this thrown together version of the PS3, that's what is going to happen. I suspect though that given their launch date Sony will announce a complete redesign of specs and system casings a few months from now, right around the time X-Box 360 is supposed to be released. Sony made a wise move stealing some of the thunder from Microsoft at this E3, but they can't possibly be this dumb to make such a horrid looking piece of technology. And as for the "Revolution"...it doesn't fit Nintendo's design or audience at all. The system looks like it was designed for the execs at IBM...not the little kids who will be playing it the most. I just don't get it. This is Nintendo's 2nd to last mainstream console folks (portables excluded), so just be warned. Overall, I feel like all 3 companies really dropped the ball on product design from an aesthetics viewpoint. The N64, the Playstation 1, the Dreamcast...those were milestones in system development.
leblanchomme @ Dec 18th 2005 9:51PM
so ur not going to buy the best machine out of the 3 because of the conceptual logo, ok ur an idiot. apreciating the dreamcast! after u blast the ps3 becuase of its logo, ok ur an idiot. Thrown together, u mean like that presentation from nintendo or what? its not horrid it looks good. the joke known as revolution fits their demographic perfectly little kids with little zelda games, forget the godamn dreamcast, the ps3 is well thought out and a great piece of machinery. ok scottc

Don't forget that Playstatio 3 is having the next generation of grand theft auto. We all remember when grand theft auto 3 came out on Playstation 2 it was the number 1 selling game of all time! and even better that the new Playstation 3 will be in high-definition with up to 54gig(dual layer) on a blu ray disc, imagine all the gaming! the xbox 360 i was told has only 8gig(dual layer) which is still good but i would rather go with the Playstation 3. The best thing is that grand theft auto always comes out on Playstation first (up to even 6 months or more) i now am looking to get new games for my Playstation 2 and everyone is going that grand theft auto is comming out on xbox and pc and i say i finished that game half a year ago!

I must admit that thses consoles are starting to be like computers. What happened to the "Game console" that we know of. All these new features with hard-drives,etc, are starting to get really complex. This should be called the "Entartainment console". A "Game console" is something that plays games and plays it well eg, original Playstation was a classic also with n64. I do love to play games on a console rather then a computer. The entertainment system(ps2,xbox360) will Revolutionise the entertainment systems eg, dvd players with speakers, etc. to a all in one. It's all a matter of time until these consoles will be upgradable(parts etc.). Don't get me wrong i like it better with all these extras but you can't forget the classics.
PS: I like the idea of the person that wrote:"if you have an ipod buy white, if you have a silver surround sound set buy silver, if you have a psp, buy black." now thats got me to choose because i got my ipod and can picture it next to the PS3.

It does look like a scanner/ice cube maker/dry cleaning press; but I bet the game play will be off the hook and you wont even look at the console.
Stop crying about stacking. Put it on its own shelf on in a vertical stand. My PS2 grace one side on my TV and My X-Box grace the other. They will both be replace by the new dips. ***I am getting the PS3 first though.***
The controller will fit the hand better than the original. I have a controller for my PC that is shape dlike that and it is confortable. Oh by the way, funny how microsoft controller now have double set of shoulder buttons PLAYSTATION DID THAT FIRST.
Bill Gates had to go on a major tv network to launch the 360. Wow. It's like putting racing stripe on a fu*king 99 Caravan to sell the shit. Wonder if it's because of the competition.

You all forget... Stackability is not something to worry about! If you care about your electronic devices, you shouldn't stack them!!!
Stacking entertainment equiptment is bad for them, cause of weight and cause of heat issues! You should use entertainment shelves! that way there is plenty of room for air!
None of the next gen systems are stackable anyway! =P
I love the PS3's design! Everything about it! Even the controller! I sooo want the black PS3!
