This time, the UK's Guardian newspaper gets in on the comparison. It gives a pretty good technical breakdown of the respective systems.

Of course, we all know that consoles do not live on tech specs alone. While one console being able to throw around a thousand more megatriplethunderhappyfunflops than the other is cool and all, it's the games that make or break it.

Still, sure is fun to drool.

More reason why i think micrsoft will have an edge on sony :

First of all, Sony is putting all of their games on a new format called blu-ray (i believe its called that). Its said that the discs can hold up to 54gigs . When it comes down to that, do you really need that much space. The first disc hasnt even been created yet and of course, buying these discs will cost you an arm and a leg. Also, the biggest game up to date so far to take up alot of space i believe is half-life 2 which consistsed of 5 700mb discs which comes to about 3.5 gigs and the xbox discs have 9 gigs. These discs will allow people to watch step-up dvd movies but only to those who have hdtv. Microsoft however is more user-friendly and hopefully should have the edge

This is pointless. this is the same as the apple pc argument i will never buy a a mac and my freind will never buy a pc NO MATTER WHAT THE PRODUCT LOOKS LIKE.I dont care if one system is a million times better than the other. If u have a PS2 u will buy a PS3. if u have a Xbox u will buy the 360. and for those of us that r fortunate to have a big wallet(and prob not a wife) will buy both. this give sony a huge advantage seeing how there consumer base is larger. and as for the new gen of gamers looking to buy they will get what there freinds have, again prob another one in sonys court. although price and shipping date will favor xbox. U dont know about price though, we all remember the psp that came out for 250 dollars and is worth a hole lot more.i remember people just like u throwing out big numbers like 5 or 6 hundred for the psp, guess what u were dead wrong. sony might pull another fast one on us remember they r competing. MS is going to town on Halo 3 as a ps3 killer( which suppossedly come out around the the same time as ps3) guess what if u dont already have an xbox halo 3 is not a big deal(not gonna hurt sony). Christmas is MS biggest advantage as sony will go to town on there consumer base. Both will win in the end. but it looks like sony will prob come out on top.

I own a xbox and i can say its way better then a ps2 in the graphics department and online play. Now since xbox360 and ps3 are soon to be coming out i had to scope this out. To be honest with you ps3 looks like it will dominate the 360 performance wise, but the thing is xbox won so many people with its awsome online gaming community which ps3 didnt have.

Fact is xbox360 will win this competition unless sony releases some sort of online gaming community of there own. Ps2 was released before the xbox and the xbox stormed by it when xbox live came out. Xbox didnt have alot of hot titles either, but now since each system has there own share of titles all sony needs is establish there own online gaming community.

Awsome online community + alot more power and better graphics = ps3>xbox360 in the long run....like i said xbox ownz ps2 :) but i dont know bout this next generation

If XBOX doesn't have alot of exclusive titles that interest me; than i'm buying PS3. I'll be buying XBOX if Ps3 doesn't have the exclusive titles that i want. Either way I won't be making my decision until 2006

Wow, thats alot of arguing, it doesn't even matter because in the end both system will be great. It doesn't matter if the Ps3 has the higher specs, great,because i doubt its going to be needed. But in the end im probably going to get both because of the games they will offer, because i for one am a gamer. And gamers should just be glad that there are competition who the hell would want MS or Sony to have a monopoly on games that would suck, that would only mean higher prices and less good games.

ok, let me say something. first, the "real time" videos of sony look really impressive, yea, IF they are, it is realy easy to say that those videos are real time but theres one thing,on the demonstration we saw the guy whit the controler, but where was the console? and on top of all... the controler was a controler of ps2.

ok, back to the whole "don't count your chickens before they hatch". You aren't really going to be able to tell which console is better BEFORE THEY EVEN COME OUT. Besides, you can have all the technical wonder in the world, but what use is it if it's not used in a practical manner that is easily accessable to programmers so that they can deliver what gamers really want: quality games. You can't even declare a clear winner on the PS2 vs. Xbox war, and how many years have the two systems been at. And console sales mean nothing. I personally plan to buy both consoles because both sony and microsoft rock. They should give up fighting, integrate their technology and creative genius, and produce the pinnacle of console gaming wonders.

ok who really cares if one is more powerfull over the other. it is all the same. xbox 360 will be just as a good as ps3. i am a xbox fan and i think that the early release of the x360 could hurt ms. but i think it will force ps3 to raise the bar. if it plays video and it looks good then what the fuck do you care on what it can do. it's a video game console. i am going to be one of the first people to buy x360. and if ps3 looks promising than i will buy that too. it''s all the same not one is better over the other. the "war" is between ms and sony. unless you actually worked on it than say all you want. but i mean c'mon it's just to play video and watch movies. they both look sleak and sexy. they both look like a dream come true for gamers every where. also halo3 is a big deal. i don't think it will hurt sony's ps3 release but i think it will help ms. but i could be wrong

i've been doing some research into buying the x360 or the ps3 and i think that both consoles sound promising but sony has already had 3 consoles specifically designed for gaming so shouldn't this give them more experience?

I'm not saying that the ps3 will be better but microsoft have only ever built one console and i think that this should be taken into consideration.

you only have to look at the xbox-ps2 battle and you can see that sony came out top, they had most of the big games on the console and people will be looking for all of these games sequels on the ps3, i think this might help the ps3's side of the battle.

also, microsoft are only just bringing out all of the latest games on thier console like doom3 and halo2 so millions of people also be looking for the next releases of these titles, so its a pretty fair fight between both the companies.

Ive been reading up lately and sony is seeming more like this huge entertainment system that i already have....so i say F@CK em because im in it for the games.....xbox360 has more promising launch titles and any other console has had for launch titles....call of duty 2....elders scroll4...perfect dark zero....ghost recon 3..etc

I don't believe you can make a console of around � 500 that is so "powerful" and revolutionary as Sony promises. Fact is that nobody has ever been able to improve graphics between 2 products in a way Sony is promising us today. Sure demos look nice, but they always do!

PS3 and xBox 360 are simply the next step and are going to be somewhat better and more prowerful than the provious ones. But not revolutionary at all.
And one year before PS4 and next xBox will be launched, Sony and MS will promise movie-like games AGAIN and they still won't look like it but just a little closer, that's all.

Oohhh and if you want to go in to hardware specs, no matter how you twist or turn it, both PS3 and xBox have 1 major shortage and that memory, cause that's expensive, so they can only put 512Mb on there consoles to keep them cheaper while there CPU's actually need 4Gb to take full potential of there CPU power!!!!! and then they still need to give about 256Mb (not much for "next generation" of games)to there graphics processor!
And don't tell me they have fast memory (700Mhz) for graphics to make up for that cause first of all it is't fast enough and it won't make up for the insuficient memory space!!!

I'm buying a PC with 1Gb of RAM and 512Mb of VRAM and it is going to be the fastest that's for sure!!

I am getting a Xbox 360, it appels to me the most. It has the most shooting games that I look interested in. It will be a TOTAL entertainment system right out of the package. I don't care if its only backwards compatible for the top-selling games. I buy new game consoles because I want to experiance new games. I am putting my old Xbox downstairs and the new one in my room.
Don't flame me I am not trying to piss people off. PS3 will be an incredible system too. It depends on your personal gaming type on what console you will get.
The Gameing Wars are going to be starting soon, they may already be happening.
Xbox 360 has far superior online play, is a TOTAL entertainment system(dvd,music,pictures,dowloading cd's and stuff like that)
I bet that some people will get pissed but for those who do...its the truth =)

Several points.

1: Interesting that this time round all of the PS fans are slating the weaker X-Box specs, a reversal of the last time, and ultimately, did it make any difference?

2: It is impossible to decide which will be better, and such a decision, as has been said, is impossible, as ultimately it will all be entirely subjective.

Finally, some of the strangest arguments continue to occur, particularly the backwards compatibility, all though not so much on this site.

Yet when I bought my PS 2, I played old games from the PS 1 for about 2 weeks, and eventually the only game worth playing anymore was FF7, so who cares, it will only increase cost, and offer a pointless option of playing mostly obsolescent games.

Ultimately, can't we all just get along and continue to reiterate the following mantra, or a variation thereof.... They are only games

Oh yeah and, I haven't touched any of my consoles in about a year, because, the games on all three, just don't make you come back for more, unlike PC games such as Civ or good MMORPGs, now if only the consoles would sort that out, then I couldn't care less about the specs.

Another aspect we must keep in mind is the quality of the systems. Myself I bought a ps2 and an Xbox, the PS2 went into a deep sleep within a year and 4 years later my Xbox is running smoothly. Many of my friends also had the same problems. With PS3 showing off all these unbelievable specs and parts, and then wanting to lower the price on the system to around $300, are all of the parts going to be cheap imitations that just don't last? Also Ps2 does have more games (quantity) but most of them are total crap! With the ever increasing (quality) games coming out for Xbox It just makes a gamer wonder, do I want 5 great games for Xbox or 5 shitty games for PS2, not saying that the PS2 doesn't have some great games?
If the Quantity vs. Quality trend continues into the next generation, many gamers are going to open their eyes to which system will hold up in the long run and which will be a scam to get u to purchase more and more of the same low quality crap. I know that most gamers do not want to pay for a console ever freaking 9 months. Personally I'm going to give my vote to the 360 because of quality, specs,a wonderful mix of gaming with other entertainment,and because at the center of every Xbox there is a heart flowing with true gaming love, unlike the heartless bastards at SONY. Hey, I used to be a Sony gamer, thank the Gaming God I didn't stay with those Focktards. Also what I see is that Xbox is one of the only things U.S. citizens can actually be proud of creating. Not having to rely on the Japanese and foreign providers. They always get the systems first and we have to stick our thumbs in our butts in anxiety. Microsoft is releasing their system to all the world at the same time! This is not to insult any nation and it shouldn't be a factor in choosing the best system, but man It feels good to be proud of something we have created. I would have to currently have to say that we can't decide which system is better untill they come out. But by based on their looks and their current systems I would have to say xbox360 is better. I had a gc sold it and got ps2 and some of my friends had xbox and my ps2 compared to the xbox while the xbox was way better. It had good games and good graphics. And as for the new systems the revaloution is the worst looking plastic box I have ever seen, ps3 is the most plain piece of shit to ever come out of sony's ass, xbox360 is the only good looking system that I would want in my room. And the xbox had good games that were only on xbox. Ps2 had no good only for ps2 games (except Kill zone)(which I never owned). The only good games I had on ps2 was the sports games that were also on xbox. So for the wrap up I will most likly get xbox360 but I wont make my move untill 2006.

Sony is leading in game sales because they released their system first...What if the xbox had been released first.Those of us who both get the x360 and the ps3 are so attached to both they are afraid of competition.Gaming would be stale and boring without a little competition. Demos mean nothing...both Sony and MS spent buttloads of money on E3. This means the demos will look good.
No one can be sure about the spec's of either system because each will be subject to change.

Most game logic will be performed on the traditional PowerPC part of the Cell, and thus normal to program. The difficult part will be concentrated in specific algorithms, like a physics engine, or certain AI. The modular nature of this code will mean that you could buy a physics engine already designed to fit into the 128k limitation of the subprocessor, and add the hooks into your code. Easy as pie.

The Cell will do the graphics processing, leaving only rasterezation to the video card. Most likely false. The high-end video cards coming out now can process the rendering chain as fast as the Cell can, looking at the raw specs of 256Gflops from the Cell, as opposed to about 200GFlops from video cards. In two years, video cards will be capable of much more, and they are already optomized for this, where the Cell is not, so video cards will perform closer to the theoretical limits.

The OS will handle the 8 additional vector processors so the programmer doesn�t need to.
Bwahahaha! No way. This is a delicate bit of coding that is going to need to be tweaked by highly-paid coders for every single game. Letting on OS predictively determine what code needs to get sent to what processor to run is insane in this case. The cost of switching out instructions is going to be very high, so any switch will need to be carefully considered by the designer, or the frame-rate will hit rock-bottom.

The Cell chip is too large to fab efficiently!

I think that the Xbox 360 will be way better than the suck Playstation. I saw all the specs and the Xbox 360 has more memory/features etc. And I dont think that the only good game to come out for the XBOX 360 is Halo 3, and isnt FINAL FANTASY coming out for the XBOX? Screw Grand Turismo, XBOX always has Forza Motorsport, Fable, Halo, Doom, etc. And I also found out that people actually bought the XBOX just to play HALO!!! 2.......Xbox360 is looking to have a very strong and successfull launch....a lot of top quality games....perfect dark zero....ghost recon 3.....ES4: Oblivion...Battlefiel2...COD2....u get the picture.....
4.....U ps3 fanboys are comparing useless numbers that mean absolutely jack squat....IT HAS 6 USB ports...Wow maybe u can take those extra ones and stick em up ur @$$...it has 7 controllers...Great because when that piece of $hit controller breaks u can throw it away and its boomerang affect will lead it right back to ur head for being such an idiot.....also ur comparing numbers like teraflops and crap.....5% of gamers know what thats about and about 99% of us really dont care...Tflops are important but 1 tflop is good enough which the xbox360 will support...also those 7 SPEs in my opinion are a waste of money...they just put up useless numbers i could care less about

It will be the developers that show the difference in graphical capabilities between both systems. Since developments cost for games will be very high the amount of groundbreaking games, gprahiclally, will decrease. Just like current gen games there will always be those few games that push each system to their full potential. As we all saw, the E3 trailers for the ps3 were incredible, but beacuse of the developent cost only a few developers will be able to make games look that good.
