Playstation 3 is still a work-in-progress

It will come as no surprise to many of us that the Sony Playstation 3 is not done yet. If you consider the launch is
a good 9 months away then the next thought in your head should be, "that gives them a good 6 months to work on it."
Making a console is like any other project out there — changes will be made right up to the 12th hour.
Where it gets tricky is when you apply this logic to what we all saw at Sony's E3 PS3 launch. As I said in the
podcast we did with Engadget, the Killzone 2 clip is a
lie. There's no way it's captured real-time gameplay. When actual gameplay footage is eventually released a few of us
will whine about the discrepencies, and the official word will be that E3 showed a representation of real gameplay, or
somesuch nonsense. Yes, Sony has repeated that
the Killzone 2 clip is real, but that doesn't make it true. Hey, I hope I'm just being a cranky old man, but I lived
through the Emotion Engine and a Metal Gear Solid 2 gameplay/cutscene clip that made reporters cry. Traumatic
stuff.
On top of the Killzone 2 thing, the Fight Night Round 3 demo showed Kudo Tsunoda with a controller in his hand, as if
he were playing the game. It's more likely he used it to rotate the camera during the sequence where he talked about
the realistic look of the characters. Notice how still the characters were at that point. Yes, the FF graphics were
probably real, but add a stadium of boxing fans, real-time action, audio and all the other bells and whistles we expect
in a game, and my bet is that the final build will show a less impressive-looking game. Of course, many of us
will point to the controller as proof that it wasn't an illusion, but it was.
Both MS and Sony are trying to sell us on illusions. But, as time passes, I feel like Sony tried extra hard to pull
the wool over my eyes. This article just drives that point home.

Absurd to shit on Sony about this - Microsoft did the same damn thing. In fact, they both have pulled this "Let's see how many benchmarks numbers we can pull from our ass, how many idiot bloggers we can hook with our propaganda and how much touched-up nonsense we can sell before the hardware ever goes into production" since the start of this generation.
Shame on the blogosphere and shame on gamers who buy into this crap. Barely even gamers. Just tech-fetishists in disguise.
Domino @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Speculation half full or half empty? Who cares. I am excited about either console (more so on Sony as not to hide anything) and the whole next gen era.
This is the truth: Games will look much better than the last gen console games.
That it enough.
C @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
We can't be mad at Sony for this because apparently it's working and they will sell alot of next generation consoles as a result. This is a corporation and they are trying to portray a certain image for the PS3, whether it's true or not. Bottom line, if you only want to buy one system, get the one which makes the first and second party games you enjoy the most. Personally, I found Halo, KOTOR, Ninja Gaiden, and playing my buddies online more appealing and enjoyable this generation, then PS2 games as Jax and Dexter, Rachet and Clank, Sly and Final Fantasy. So I'm leaning towards a 360.
Timmay! @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Ok, is it just me, or does this entire round of systems dissapoint. Sony and Microsoft are turning for gaming systems to "entertainment systems." I liked the idea of using my X-Box or PS2 to play DVDs, and it made sense because both systems used DVDs for their games, but everything else just seems unnecessary.
Both systems look like crap too. The X-Box 360 looks like it was designed by first year art students, and there's no excuse for the PS3.
I really dread the idea of microtransactions. It's far too easy to picture game makers putting as little as possible into a game and making gamers buy the extra weapons, games, ect that they would normally just earn in the game itself.
The only saving grace I've seen so far is the Nintendo Revolution, and even that seems sketchy right now.
Todd @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
The whole reason for this is because Sony didn't want to loose the PR war. They seen that market analysts (what do they know anyway) were saying that the Xbox 360 was going to take a big bite out of their customer base & they were going to do it before they could get their product out. What to do? Well, when you don't mind lying to your fans (and let’s face it, they have in the past) you make it up. You have to kill that buzz anyway you can and they did a pretty good job of it. You over promise, and after most everybody forgets, you under deliver. That's why I don't buy Sony products anymore (I used to love them). I'd rather buy a product from a company that tells me like it is, even if Sony had the games I love to play. I just can't force myself to give money to someone who flat out lies to get it.
Dan Dickinson @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
I'm confused here. From the article:
"Burkett discussed how NVIDIA and Sony had used an upcoming product with many similar capabilities to the RSX to demonstrate the capabilities of the Playstation 3 GPU. The demos at the show were running on NVIDIA's upcoming high-end desktop part, and also SLI systems. It is unclear whether these were based on the new desktop part that we've referred to as G70 in the past, or whether they were GeForce 6800 Ultra SLI combinations."
So let me get this straight: Microsoft shows their demos on non-final hardware, and the response is "These are alpha kits only at 30% of the final power! The real thing is going to be SWEET!". Sony shows their demos on non-final hardware, and the response is "It's all illusions! Sony is pulling wool over our eyes!"
Cpt Spaulding @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
They really like touting the bs with the recent launches, 2 teraflops? that rates the PS3 in the worlds top 200 supercomputers, yeh right. Blueray? I can assure you buy the time you see a 40GB+ game/film microsoft will own the planet and we will all work at EA games improving the 'Matrix' while robots see to the mundane daily running of the planet...that or we take 10 steps back to the days of 'Ground Zero Texas' on the MegaCD and its all FMV content (A fate worse than selling ones soul to Bill Gates). Like all good computing folks, they start with an idea of what they'd like it to do and it all goes downhill from there.
Death to micro-purchases, Death to in-game advertising, Long live the 'Revolution'!!!
Lost_Canadian @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Killzone 2 is completely believable. I don't think the footage showed anything new in terms of effects - there was just more of everything. Play Half-Life 2 or Doom 3 on a high-end machine, then picture the next generation after that. I don't have any doubt that games will look like that a year from now. HDR lighting makes a huge difference, btw.
Motorstorm on the other hand does not look possible.
This is coming from the standpoint of an OpenGL software designer, if that means anything.
Jon @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
I was at E3 and actually got to see Xbox 360 Gameplay, that while amazing looking was still visibly a Game running on a console. PS3 Killzone ad and others are a Lie and that's why it matters. Killzone publisher has stated it was a FMV video and Sony CEO and others continue to flat out lie about this. That's not good because what else should we not believe about the SONY PS3.
I like what I'm seeing of the 360 games and have seen nothing real so far about the PS3 games so I definately will not wait a year for a promise and a lie. MS is delivering real product with the 360 this winter that is excellent and tangible.
So as of right now, as much as Sony would like us all to believe, there is only one player that is anywhere near ready to playball and that is Microsoft.
Oh and why haven't we heard anything at all from Sony about their online plans yet??? This is suge a huge omission that I'm shocked that Sony hasn't taken more heat for this from the gaming press. If their silence means more of the same for online support ( which is to say not any at all), then PS3 will have a huge problem when everyone see's the added benefit and extended playability that a comprehensive online plan offers to every game title.

Sony and Microsoft are in the same boat when it came to displaying their material chek out the Mac world article
E3: Power Macs run Xbox 360 demos
It's no secret that Microsoft Corp. has seeded key developers of software for its new Xbox 360 video game console specially configured Power Mac G5 systems, and it's no wonder. The Xbox 360 uses a PowerPC CPU just like the Power Mac G5 does. If there was any doubt, all one had to do was look on the show floor of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles this week.
Microsoft's booth included an area dedicated to the forthcoming console, showing games now in development, which was first unveiled to the public last week during a special event broadcast on cable television network MTV. Xbox 360, which Microsoft said will hit stores before the year's end, touts wireless networking and controllers, High Definition (HD) TV output and considerably more processing power and memory than its predecessor, as well as a new industrial design.
The centerpiece of the kiosks dedicated to the Xbox 360 were large flat-panel HDTV systems showing the Xbox 360 games in use. A slot on the podium underneath the display showed an Xbox 360 chassis, powered and glowing, but they were there for show only. Plainly visible behind vented grates were a pair of Power Mac G5s side-by-side, doing the real work.
Microsoft has confirmed that Power Mac G5s have been seeded to early Xbox 360 developers, and said that new development hardware will be forthcoming that will more closely resemble the Xbox 360's final shipping specification.

I don't understand why Engadget is so convinced that the demo was a 'lie'. In fact I think that the 'lie' itself may be a, well, lie.
The Killzone clip: completely believable. How can we look at the specs on one hand and say 'wow that is completely absurd hardware' and then on the other hand say 'no way I believe that'? The thing people are having trouble with is the scripted camera in the Killzone demo. It makes a huge difference. Of course the game will not move in the way that camera moved, it would be too hard to play, but it makes for fantastic cinematics.
You guys are taking the 'toy story in real time' thing too far. I really don't think they were lying. Hyping, yes.

Did Ben Zackheim get paid by Microsoft to write this piece? It certainly made me wonder if this article was written merely to make readers forget the fact that XBox 360 is inferior to PS3 in both performance and appearance.
Chill out, Ben! You are just a "cranky old man" bashing Sony to make a living as a writer. That's what I got out of your article.
tgibbs @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
At this stage of development, anything shown is best regarded as "computer artists' conceptions of what they hope the games will look like."
Ben Z @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Hey, if I'm wrong, great. I'd love to see a game look like that. I don't think I'm wrong. Yeah, like I said both MS and Sony are selling us on illusions. But Sony has a rep for stretching the truth at the launch of their consoles (Emotion Engine is tough to forget, unless you're a Sony fanboy). MS is definitely guilty of throwing specs at us so fast we get dizzy, but in the one way that actually counts (games) they didn't even put their best foot forward. Hell, MS actually did a poor job of showing their best stuff. They were too honest if anything. Showing us alphas? Why do that? Watch the Gears of War clip again. Does it let you soak in how gorgeous the graphics are? No, it feels like MTV cut it. Sony understands what they can get away with, and they push it further everytime. There's nothing wrong with calling them on it.
nIC @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
It's funny how sony of you are not defending SONY. Now you are even blaming Ben to have been paid by Microsoft. Hey if he is getting paid by them then more power to him. You guys sure don't pay his Bills. Now As far as you guys coming out and defending the killzone cgi movie that is the most dumb thing or perhaps disllutional thing you could do.
How can you not come to a conclusion that it was all cgi...yeah this will be possible one day but surely not anytime soon, perhaps next gen. YOU SONY FANBOYS WOULD EAT ANYTHING SONY THROWS AT YOU. and then you want to claim Microsoft is Evil.
Ben is not the only skeptic around, read around the web and you'll notice that many people agree of the killzone cgi movie and most likely all demo sony showed were fake and done in CGI.
You guys are sure to bash Microsoft anytime... the HIPOCRISY.
As far as the complete overall system... i think MS has an edge since Sony still needs to develop a PlayStation3. Even though at the end sony might have an edge, but not much of an edge. THE PS3 WILL be a good game console but not much better then the Xbox360.
Inscent @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
I think the best thing for anyone to do at this point, is wait for Xbox 360 in-game, hands-on reviews. If the graphics of those games don't look like what was shown in demos, nor look that much better than current Xbox games, then it'll be a given as to what Ps3 games might possibly look like. :)
Ben Z. @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Inscent, you make a good point. Some may argue that comparing the PS3 and 360 is apples and oranges but, in the end, MS and Sony are probably doomed to offer similarly powerful machines. They know they can only spend so much money on each device, they know what customers will be willing to pay, AND they don't want to take a loss on each machine -- so it could be argued that the final hardware will provide pretty equal power.
stiill @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
WHY ARE YOU STILL SPECULATING ON THIS?
Only Fight Night and the Unreal engine demo were rendered in real-time (and that was on hardware not even remotely resembling PS3 hardware, but let's not be sticklers). That's straight from the people who worked on the demos. They should know-- they rendered the friggin movies.
I don't care where this puts me on the "I hate Sony" or the "I hate Microsoft" continuum: just get the facts and figure it out for yourself. The fact is, those are the two real-time portions of the press conference.
2PLAY @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
everyone is getting worked up over nothing. Sony likes to Promise the world to sell its systems and almost always falls far from there promises. I feel MS is playing a different card this time around. They are showing underwelming software that was made on the original dev kits (modded g5's) to make everyone see what they are up to but now wow them, because they want to wow them at retail. They want people to try the games for themselves and see that the games they have alook spectacular and are playable. I wouldn't be suprised if the specs for the machine were down played to stress the wow factor. Sony hasn't finished there "cell" crap so no one really knows whats possible on it yet. They are estimating and the demos they showed were not playable to anyone other than the demonstrators. The Killzone Demo is an obvious coreographed video. If you look at it its obvious that the game is either full motion video or the level was created using ingame graphics for that presentation but is not playable. Common sense should hit us by now, think of this you guys, why would Sony throw soo much development time to a sequal to such a n underperforming, poorly reviewed game? Wasn't the original supposed to be the Halo Killer?
P.S. remember this, Square's Bouncer (enough said..)
mike @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
This all is so pro microsoft..anyway till now the only thing we know is about the consols and so SONY wins this round by being a better machine all around. The games will come later and so we shall see then and by having more time in their hands SONY will be able to clear all the faults and trim their machine.Slow and Steady wins the race.
t @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
hey, both systems are going to be uber-powerful, and they're both going to have a bunch of great games. when they are finally published. i would rather wait a couple years, myself, and let them put out a bunch of games and drop the price a couple hundred dollars, like they always do, before getting either.
HIghlander @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
If I see one more 'analyst' bitch and whine about Sony and the Emotion engine I think I shall puke.
All these so called analysts are pitching a big fit saying this is just like PS2 and Sony will disappoint everyone because as we all know PS2 and emotion engine was all sh$t and nothing more than a big lie. What crap. If you can't see how PS2 represented a major leap from the Playstation in terms of graphics and sound then you need to wake up. Whether it was better than Dreamcast (stop dreaming people the 'cast died a long time ago) is irrelevent, PS2 was the next generation from the PSOne generation, so was Dreamcast.
PS3 will be, undeniably, a leap from PS2. It will be a leap from Xbox too. The X360 from Micorsoft will similarly be way better than either PS2 or original Xbox.
All this p1$$1ng on sony because of some percieved smoke and mirrors is both dishonest and naive. Sony, M$ and Nintendo are all using smoke and mirrors to make their box look best. None of these boxes are finished yet, all will be better than what we have now.
Dan Dickinson @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM

Yes it was Microsoft who made the Toy Story 2 comment. Check the link above (Ben, I'm looking in your direction.)
"Gates said the 3-D chips in the Xbox would be three times faster than anything on the market and offer nearly unlimited graphical visuals. "We're approaching the level of detail seen in Toy Story 2," he said, referring to the computer-generated kids film from Disney/Pixar."

There is a huge difference. Sony was specifically showing RSX tech demos and saying "look at what th RSX can do"... when THERE WAS NO RSX. Microsoft showed real 360 games running on inferior hardware... sony showed demos that were supposedly showcasing hardware that doesnt exist.

no manufacturer did show what there real babies could do .
even microsoft managed to put an xbox 360 and two apple G5 in a BIG cubic box ( which was pictured by a fan ) . .
but you can believe what you're seeing there . how ? well . neither Sony nor microsoft is willing to lose any consumer . if their game footages weren't 70 or 80 % ( a real gameplay footage ) , then the gamer mentality would shift toward NOT TRUSTING any of these behemoth companies .
as we've seen MGS 2 footage long time ago . it was something outstanding ..
take a look at a game on PS1 , and PS2 , you'll see radical change ( positive one ) and you'll say : PS1 is Etch a Sketch , compared to PS2 .
i think , the PS3 will follow the same footsteps , as to leap forward to next gen in an astonishing way .
metal_mickey @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
the BASIC truth here.. is that Sony have better art direction in mind. Creatively all the clips shown on PS3 were creatively impressive in terms of vision. If you look closely at Killzone, it is NOT a huge jump, it's just about smooth animation and very strong Art Direction style and clever use of lighting. I have not seen a SINGLE example from Microsoft that make me think XBOX 360 is in anyway better than XBOX. Pre rendered of real. XBOX 360 art direction is old school and un imaginative. What does term HALO killer mean? Halo2 is a shit, linier and unimaginative game..
People, have some faith.there was stuff an E3 for PS3 that was realtime, which WAS impressive, the tech demo's alone were impressive.
Time will tell... but what is clear, sony WILL blow microsoft out of the water.. they will have 6months to make sure of that. And I don't want a machine that is a global hub, that I have to subscribe to .. I want a Machine, a powerful shiny machine, that can realise my dreams and the dreams of developers.
Stop being negative. Really
Michael @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Okay, let's put this absurd level of controversy surrounding Killzone and Sony's "lies" to rest. I'm going to try to cut through the favorite pre-renders, and remind people of what they may have forgot. Let's go one by one through what Sony showed us on a box that isn't even "final hardware" (the MS fanboy's own saving grace).
1. Luna Pixel Shader Demo - I believe this is real-time. I've heard nothing to the contrary. And this alone looks better than anything I've ever seen done in real-time.
2. Unreal Engine 3 Demo - Real-time. Absurdly beautiful. It speaks for itself, but there are some interesting Tim Sweeney quotes: "Shaders that are more than 200 times more complex than was possible in the previous generation" "All of the effects that you have seen in previous generation movies are now being done in real-time" "We got the first PlayStation 3 hardware only 2 months ago"
Let me guess, Tim is lying for Sony?
3. "Lots of Ducks" Demo - Real-time. Very impressive to anyone who understands the kind of processing power required.
3b. Eye-Toy Duck Demo - Real-time. The things this guy does with two neon cylinders and a current-gen Eye-Toy is jaw dropping (you can hear it in the audience). I've never seen water seperated like that in real-time.
4. Leaves Vortex Demo - Real-time. Hundreds of Thousands of leaves. 5.1 Surround Sound. Every leaf has it's OWN audio channel.
5. Blow-It-Up Demo - Real-time. Uses only the Cell processor. "Renders volumetrically all of the performance required to simulate an explosion, thermo-dynamics, heat, gas, smoke, fire." And this is for a game in development.
6. Alfred Molina Demo - Real-time. Breathtaking. I showed this to a friend and he said "So what? The PlayStation 3 can play DVDs..." not realizing what was happening.
7. Satellite + LIDAR Landscape Demo - Obviously a video, but claimed to be real-time using only the Cell.
8. SOE Fantasy Landscape Demo - Another pre-recorded real-time. Impressive, even with a grain of salt.
9. The Getaway Demo - Pre-recorded but believably real-time.
10 Spider-Man + Gran Turismo Demo - Not sure exactly what's going on here, but the combination is seamless.
11. 12 Simlutaneous Channel HD Decoding/1000 Decoded Media Thumbnails
12. Fight Night Demo - Real-time. You all know it and love it.
13. Final Fantasy VII Tech Demo - I assume this is scripted real-time, otherwise it's just the FFVII intro with a super nice looking Cloud at the end.
14. Video of developers praising the PlayStation 3.
After this is where the drama begins. It's not really clear if any of the game demos are real-time, or just pre-rendered.
So let's assume Sony is "lying." After all, they're not Microsoft. Let's just say all the Sony developed games (The F-1 Game, Vision Gran Turismo, Killzone and some of the games from the second segment) are just CGI.
What about the demos from the other developers?
Are Square-Enix, Electronic Arts, Capcom, Ban Dai, Namco, RockStar, Insomniac, Sega, and UbiSoft lying to us too? Trying to over-hype Sony's system?
The key difference between the hype of the PlayStation 3 vs. the PlayStation 2 is the large showing and support from third party developers. So they're all taking a risk if they're bloating it's capabilities.
Due to this, I think such a level of cynicism based around what has been shown is unrealistic and desperate.
And even with just the REAL tech demos I outlined earlier, anybody with sense would leave their conference impressed. I can't understand this hyper-focusing on a couple of demos, simply because they look too good to be true. I think everything shown was too good to be true.
So anyway, let's just see what happens.
Misasfasise @ Dec 18th 2005 8:45PM
Microsoft and Sony are just trying not to compare themselves, even though they are doing pretty much the same things in media and games. They're trying to "one-up" one another. And they both seem to lie to do it. The only company that does not seem to be lieing ever is nintendo. Given that they did not say much this year, but they didn't lie either of what they did say. Maybe Nintendo has a better strategy, by not getting involed with this "kiddish" lieing dispute.

Amazing how people will say Killzone and other games are not real just because they don't believe sony's reps and because the graphics are great. Any supporting evidence? "Oh, it just can't be. And look what they've done in the past." So supporting evidence is your own unsupported opinion and what Sony's done in the past (which is indicative, but not necessarily what will happen again). People should just say, "I don't know if that is what the graphics will look like." Not "That is bs, I don't believe it". They said it was representative, so if that means it was real-time or not, what matters is that it will be very similar to what will come out. Reporters and writers are just trying to look popular and get attention by writing this unsupported crap.

Looks better - I may agree
Backwards Compatabile - Who cares, Like I really wanna play Rainbow Six 3 on the systems when The New Games will be so much better .
Latest Tech - The both have that hell cell phones released 6 moths ago had that and now the new one have that 2
Twice the power - both have double the power if not more of the previous system.(no point here)
Better Games - Most Games now are cross platform with a few games pledging their alligence to one or the other, still no point
Better Graphics - People still try to sell me on this with PS2 Vs XBOX. and as anyone knows the XBOX Graphics are and have been better wethere of not this transfers to the new systems has yet to be seen even after all the FMV and CGI they gave us at E3
Better Online Gameplay - Are freaking kidding me! the PS2 online gameplay sucked so bad, I mean what were they thinking allowing dial up users to play online, then there was the crappy connections when a dial up user would join a game and basically suck every ounce of fun right out of it then you would get dropped and have to start all over again. NO FRIENDS LIST
I mean that is the pinacle of online gaming
Easier to develop for - As far as i can tell there are tons of the same games for both systems, alot of which I wonder why they ever developed in the first place. and again there are games that are platform spcific, for one reason or another, this will always be.
so in the end you have said nothing of truth and nothing that sells the PS3,
I will however most likely own both systems reguardless, as there will be games that are specific for for the playstation, which will be my main motivation for my purchase, with out a superb online gaming rebuild the PS3 can have all the graphics it wants and it will sell but the XBOX 360 will kill in that market, Although if they shave the price of nextgen games to todays standards then we have a real battle on our hands!!!!!

For the Xbox 360 will be the best because the original xbox is better than any other of it's generation. With a great compability with pc xbox 360 will win the war.

If you think back on the ps1, it was ok right? Than they came out with the ps2 and that was WAY better, so imagine what the ps3 will come to hold? The ps3 has 2 teraflops!!! thats sooo much graphical power. So the graphics are going to be off the hook! The Xbox 360 just cant compare with that. So sure, most demos were fake, but i still think that grand terismo demo was real. So more power to sony. Im not an Xbox hater, but i think its safe to say that the ps3 will be the grater of the systems, and heck sony has extra time to live up to this. And how could u not like how it looks! Its awsome!!! But what really surprises me is this blue ray stuff, mabye its true, mabye its not, but it probly is considering this is similar to what a dvd player does.

All parties are guilty of "lying" MS did it with the X-Box and Sony with the PS3...
At the end of the day, we can't deter from the fact that although graphics are important its importance is overshadowed by the gameplay of the games....the graphics could look amazing but if the game isn't good then there who's gonna play them?!?!?!?!
Bring on the PS3 and Next gen Pro Evo!!!!!
