Some guy named Ben dropped us a question that we didn't have an answer to, so we thought we'd broadcast it to you in
the off chance that you could drop some knowledge. Or perhaps, the future is just dim for Pilotwings…
Ben writes: "sorry if i'm being dim but if it helps i'm english so imagine me as a sort of hugh grant character and
you'll be less irritated anyway my question: pilotwings. i loved that game, both incarnations. might we ever see an
update?"
Remember that game called Pilotwings?

I doubt it. I, personally, prefered the Paradigm developed sequel on the N64 to it's mode-7 cousin, but that might just be me.
I really don't see Nintendo doing another.

I loved pilotwings. Pilotwings 64 was pretty good too, but not nearly as innovative as I thought pilotwings on the snes was. I sure do miss "Mode 7" pseudo 3d. Anyone remember the cool use of mode 7 in actraiser? The intro when you would go down to the planet and kill monsters in like a spinning circle? It was pretty sweet for the time.

Remember how Pilotwings had that semi-vocal synth soundtrack? "I wanna fly sky high...fly to the sky..."

Though, Pilotwings would be an excellent title for the DS and stylus input (and blowing on the mic), or the Revolution, were its controllers to have some sort of gyroscopic feature.

I played that game in a tradeshow eons ago. Rasterized 3D graphics on a 8 -bits console, very cool. That's the kind of stuff that will come back sooner or later on the DS.

Factor 5 (of Star Wars: Rogue Squadron fame) were supposedly working on a Pilotwings sequel for the Gamecube (or its successor) back in 2003, but I haven't heard anything about it since. Factor 5 and Nintendo are on the outs, so I'm sure it's cancelled. However, I doubt Nintendo has forgotten the series. It would fit well with their "All ages and simple" gameplay goal.

Pilotwings was awesome. I still play it on my snes.

Pilotwings 64 is one of the few must have games for the N64 in my book. The missions were fun but just flying around was even more fun. Just goes to show that people were off goofing around ignoring missions long before GTA3 showed up.

Damnit.. I read this at work, and now I really feel the need to go home and play pilotwings again. Jerks! In all seriousness, I would love to see a new take on this game, it was simplistic and fun and almost original, something missing from most games these days :)

I just played through both of the SNES and N64 versions on my XBox this past weekend.

Indeed #7 jocob, Factor 5 were making a Pilotwings game that was quickly rumoured to be a Revo launch title.
I think Factor 5 are Lucas Arts owned (?), so therefor a Nintendo game is sadly looking out of the question now. And after RS&RS2 think how great it would have been, ah well I'll still get the good stuff (as in RS) on the PS3, would have been better on the good old N though.

I remember reading in the Oficial Nintendo magazine here in Mexico, that SEga was going to develop it for the arcades & Gamecube using the Triforce System, but instead ws going to become the Kid Icarus sequel (a la Space Harrier mode). But that was around the time Mario Sunshine was released so, maybe for revolution or let's hope someone else does a game like that... I used to rent it alot since it was discontinued early and became hard to find. thank god for Snes9x...

Pilotwings is in the same boat as Nights. Yuji Naka said he'd make another one...but I doubt there's much that could generate enough hype to get Sega (or in Pilotwing's case, Nintendo) to okay it. Classic games ported to current consoles (with the exception of any and all Italian plumbers) are exactly what Miyamoto was going on about "lack of innovation" for.

Hey, quit spamming xboxsoftmods.com jason. IT SUCKS. All the info you need is at xbox-scene.com. most of your info is ripped from there anyway.

Oh, it will be back. Especially when they see how many people will download the old games on the Revolution.

oh mode 7, how we loved thee. from pilotwings, to roleplaying games, to ... uh ... that one castlevania game that came out with the SNES ... and yeah, that's kinda it.
ok that's stretching it, but all the times we really NOTICED mode 7 graphics? That's all that I can come up with. Can anyone else remember? It's late and I'm kinda coming down with a cold.

man actraiser
i loved that amazing spin into the ground. worth playing just for the melodrama alone
i agree that the n64 version was better. it was mellow and chilled me out (except when i had a controller throwing moments of frustration)
can't we campaign or something?
oh by the way *i'm* that guy ben :)

How many noticed Mode 7? Can anyone say Super Mario Kart?
Jon W, I'm with ya on going home to play it today....work is going to drag forever today I bet now.
Personally I absolutely loved Pilotwings, and Pilotwings 64 was absolutely one of the best N64 games ever! I was hugely dissapointed to hear nothing of a Gamecube Pilotwings iteration. Lets hope the Revolution will get one. SetupWeasel, I hope you're right and Nintendo will take the hint when so many download it if they haven't already started work on one.
If they were to rerelease Pilotwings on the DS that would get me to stop playing my PSP so much and finally purchase the DS (that and when Animal Crossing finally comes out).

Yeah, I thought I heard something about it being turned into a new Kid Icarus for the Gamecube.
I think a new Kid Icarus for the Revolution. do it, do it.

Despite the fact that a new Kid Icarus really, really needs to be made (how on Earth was Pit not a character in Smash Bros. Melee as opposed to say.. Ice Climbers?) the Mode 7 early SNES game I'd most like to see a current/next-gen sequel for is Actraiser. Quite an enjoyable combination of action and strategy.

can someone try and explain to me how pilotwings could turn into kid icarus?
they are totally different games
i'm a man of imagination but this stretches mine...

As long as we're wishing for old 64 games to make a re-appearance, how about Tetrisphere for the DS?

kind of off topic but still. what about blastcorps? hours of awesomness was found in that game.

Funny...I just played it at the Game On exhibit in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Had to show up Dad by beating level one real quick... :D

Nintendo killed the Pilotwings franchise, by cancelling the trademark about two years ago.

We need to start a fan site or something to get more attention to this. PilotWings 64 was awesome, we need a Next-Gen version!

Once mastered pilotwings 64 is a very relaxing and enjoyable game to play, particularly the hang gliding and birdman modes. I still play it after all these years, I might be addicted. Have you flown through the barns in little states without crashing? That can be stressful. I hope someone makes a sequil.
