@#2
A box that you know nothing about is proof of what exactly? It doesn't prove anything, there could be a monkey running about in there with his willy in an Xbox360 giving it some good monkey spunk to make it run 50x faster.

Going by #2's logic (or lack thereof), I wonder what we can conclude about the XBox 360? :D

There is no conclusion you can derive about the PS3 based off this picture. Nothing.
Its probably this big because there is additional hardware for development in it. Things that would allow you to peek into the system memory, registers, save the states. There could be even be a full logic analyzer in it.
Based on other development boards for some network processors I've seen, I'd say this looks pretty typical for an initial dev kit.

damm is that the george forman grill people are talking about??
But on the serious note I think they are being pushed to hard to get this thing in final stages by this time next year. Yes the g70rsx is almost done but how can they make good games with just 1 year. Most companies dont even have dev kits yet. There was even article about them not being able to develop dev kits fast enough to give them to the developers. I for one think they will have to delay it, cause a launch in spring 06 is to rushed and then games will lack polish. Don't expect MSG or any top notch title at launch. Not till 2007. Maybe other than ridge racer namco always has that at launch. Of course this huge thing is just the dev kit it wont be the bose wannabe design that they say will be.
MS has Sony rushing to things. I think they should just take their time if not I smell harware issues at launch and lack of quality titles. Then again the japanese release is usually sonys beta test.

What additional hardware? It has to run on all ps3 equipment cell + rsx and the same situation to make it possible to develop ps3 games... what othe rhardware would there be. That excuse is like saying "oh ya microsoft shipped all the xbox360's dev kits the size of bluegene because it needed to develop for the 360 there is no reason for giant kits like this and shows that development is far from complete, did you see a bluray drive? I didn't it histerical majornelson was like the second to have this and laugh ata it because it really is funny... But im not gonna restate all i said if you wanna see my real comment + majors pics check out my blog entry.

Um, actually the "extra hardware" argument isn't bogus....
Doesn't everyone remember what the PSP dev kits looked like? The darn thing was just a hollow shell with a screen and buttons connected to a giant mini-ATX sized case. It's simply because it's far cheaper and more efficient to ship units with the hardware spread out and isolatable, especially with diagnostics hardware in there, than to ship actual units (less servicable, not mass-produced yet, AND no room for the extra hardware).

I agree with nothing being derived from this. Not only does it likely have extra features, being a dev kit, but it has to imitate technology a year into the future, blu-ray might not be used in this system, because it is still being worked on, and why would they need it? just a hardrive would do. Imitating the cell processor would be dificult to do so size is needed.

I almost want to say it's a fake put out by an XBOX fanboy, but who cares if it is real or not? I've never seen a dev kit influence the design or sales of a system.

Japanese site says Sony’s PlayStation 3 demo was running on an inferior developer kit that’s 75% speed of final version
Back at Sony's PlayStation 3 presentation at E3, the company and its publishers showed off a number of demos and presentations, some of which were running in real-time on a developer's prototype machine. Naturally, one of the questions that were raised by the audiences was whether the actual console--which hits stores in spring 2006--would be able to run its games with as much graphical integrity. The answer is yes, according to Web site ITmedia, which reports that the finalized PS3 will be exceedingly more powerful than its current developer’s machine.
ITmedia revealed that the Cell chip used in Sony's current PS3 developer machine is running at only 2.4 MHz, which is just 75 percent of the actual speed of the machine's final spec of 3.2MHz. The report also reconfirms that the graphics processor unit used in the machine is not the real RSX chip that will be used in the final product, but another GPU that Nvidia has yet to officially announce.

Sony is still in the race, clearly.
After all, they are a real electronics company, not buggy-software vendor turned console manufacturer.

It's a dev kit. They're not gonna pay extra to jam all that in the PS3 case, especially since the production specs (supposedly) are not fully fleshed out and you need to stick in more equipment.
C'mon! The xbox 360 demos in E3 were done by dev kits. You know what they were? Apple power macs! Is that indicative of the X-Box 360s future?
I saw the thread (http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000340040952/) discussing this fact. It was no where near as heated as this thread. What's up with that?

Well, PSP was supposed to have a 333mhz chip according to SONY.
Guess what it has? 250mhz
Sony promised the EMOTION ENGINE for PS2..Yea, still waiting for that one.
Guess what im saying is dont hold your breath waiting on SONYS ( PROMISE ) to have the spec it quoted.

Well the all the X360 games were REAL games, no one has seen any real games running on the PS3 and according to sources such as Gamespot and IGN the ps3's cell is not as powerful as its made out to be, the stuff that cell does best doesn't really apply to what a game needs it to do, a lot of power for nothing. Another thing is Nvidia are the best at making Tech demos, hell there were tech demos 2-3 years ago that look a lot better than the graphics in any game at the moment.

The Hardware is almost equaly matched, it will come down to the software and with development tools such as XNA under Microsofts belt i think they have an advantage. No body does software like Microsoft.
You have to remember that numbers are not everything, the best PC preformance doesn't always come out of the higher spec, if you look at the pentium 4 its not actualy as good as the pentium 3.
The xbox 360 games were running on an underpowered Dev kid too, the only difference is that the underpowered xbox dev kid was running real games as is said above. The xbox 360 games are supposed to look better than that come the 360 launch.

Ahhh... I see that they listened to all the fanboy forums and took the 'Spider-Man 2' font off the thing...
Anyway,
RM - Technically the PSP DOES have the 333Mhz chip, it is running at 250. Effectively you are correct. But get over the 'Sony Promises' thing... Who cares? Does the PSP not deliver fun, even at it's crippled speed? Emotion engine not happening on the PS2... Did that prevent you from enjoying GTA3 or something? Or any of the other games for the PS1 or PS2? PS3 will be good too, all of this is marketing and needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Will the XBox360's "Ring of Light" really mean anything substantial at the end of the day?
The developer's kit for the XBox was a modified Mac G5, a huge box as well... But it managed to come together. The PS3 will sit nicely next to my XBox360.
...And by the way, I almost hope it does ship with the 'dildorang' controller so all the haters can short-circut because you acted like you wouldn't buy one because of that controller! "Want to buy... Must Not Buy! Typed... Stupid... Things... ABOUT Controller on Joystiq... BUT WANT TO BUY!.... But... BZZzzzzzrrrpp.. ARRGH! TEH PAIN! L33T PAiN! POUR REDBULL ON TEH PAIN!"
But wait Haxor...A solution! You can wait for the PS3forFREE.COM offers! If anyone still talks to you (AIM doesn't count), you can tell them that you didn't pay for the silver POS anyway.

Wake up guys, Microsoft produces crap software. That's a fact.
There are still bugs in Word that were discovered more than 7 years ago. They just don't know how to fix them.
If you count on software to save the day, Microsoft is doomed.
Did anyone tell you about those Dirty Disc Errors?
Let me break it down to you: Any time a software error occurs, you get a DDE. Smart trick! It's never software bugs, it's always your disc that is too dirty.

What you just said was crap, you can find bugs in almost every piece of software out there. They said that Mozilla Firefox was better than Internet explorer because It didn't have as many holes and bug.. Now they are finding more and more bugs in Firefox. I have never had a "DDE" and i have had my Xbox since march 2002.

Sure Microsoft has released some pretty sub-standard software in the past but i think you will find a lot of the problems with IE word and a lot of their other software have been fixed, there’s a constant stream of updates coming from Microsoft. Are you up to date?... Well anyway, back on Topic, Sony has a Reputation for not delivering what they say they will beforehand; take a look at the PS2, the biggest disappointment of a gaming machine i have ever bought. I mean Blimey, at the time the PS2 came out even the Dreamcast looked better, a lot of the games that came out of both systems looked shockingly better on the Dreamcast. I bet if GTA3 came out on the Dreamcast it would run better due to the fact that Power VR only drew what the player could see, not even Shenmue would run on the PS2. Wow I’m going really off topic now.
To sum all that up… I don't believe the Hype and I don't think the PS3 will outperform the Xbox 360. From what i have seen Sony are just Chucking out Tech Demos and saying "Look this is what our console can Do" I for one don't buy it. As someone else said before Tech demos can look as good as you want them to because when it comes down to it the whole machine is being used to generate one image, not a whole game. Sony is practically lying to you.

Hideo Kojima (MGS series) Himself said that Sony are setting their standards too high with all the Tech Demos and technical babble. (I will post a link if I find the Article)
A man that has almost defiantly got to drips with the PS3 hardware is saying that they are setting their standards too high? Hey wait a minute; maybe the PS3 wont be as good as the hype will lead you to believe. Shocking? not really.
Well to me this looks like Hideo Kojima is saying quite plainly that the PS3 wont deliver what they say it will, sure I could be wrong but it does look that way.
I am not an "Xbox/Nintendo Fanboy", im way too old to be a "Fanboy".
