Yeah, sorry, but file this under "ridiculous" rather than tenuous- why in the world would a bunch of ex-Sega employees be working on a Sega game? And why would Yu Suzuki not be making a sequel to his own game?

Regardless, if, somehow, Shenmue 3 found it's way onto an Xbox 360, I would most certainly call it a killer app- Shenmue is one of those games that will age wonderfully because of the immersive experience that the games offer.

If it is true, then I may actually get an Xbox 360. Most likely a rumor though.

Why would the sequel to a beloved but mediocre-selling game be a "killer app"? The first two didn't save Sega's bacon. You could claim Halo was in a similar position (as it's the spiritual sequel of the nichey Marathon), but let's not forget that Halo built upon the tropes of other FPS; something like Shenmue has a play mechanic that isn't mainstream. (Also, the first Xbox was a financial and market share dog by most metrics, so the "killer app" label still seems misapplied to it.)

Let's not make the mistake of thinking that a niche product is the next big thing. As good as Katamari is, it's not pushing consoles hand over fist. If they made sequels to Out of This World or Bionic Commando for the Xbox 360 I'd buy one also, but that doesn't mean either one would have a significant impact.

As much as I'd like a Shenmue 3, I don't think it will happen until Yu Suzuki makes an official announcement.

So this is purely the author's speculation...gah now there's gonna be a million n00bs over at Shenmue Dojo making topics about how Joystiq says Shenmue 3's on its way -_-;

Let's see here. Now follow along. If you were an American gamer this is what you'd have paid at some point in time to follow the Shenmue saga as it was released (which is how you did play it if you were a fan of the game.), if this rumor is indeed true:

Sega Dreamcast: $150
Shenmue: $50
Microsoft Xbox: $300
Shenmue 1 & 2: $50
Microsoft Xbox 360: $350 (?)
Shenmue 3: $50.

$950.

For a game that still has one part to go after 3.

Killer app? More like dead app.

They should port this to the PC. The long, serial, "novel" storytelling aspect of Shenmue might find a more enthusiastic audience on the PC platform. Hell, they already have Xbox versions of Parts 1 and 2, so why not? Port them and sell them as budgetware for $20.

It should be a crime to end stories before they're over. Therefore, they MUST make Shenmue 3. And if it's on XBOX 360, they should also release a "lite" version of the entire game, for Dreamcast affectionados like myself.

I bought the DC for the promise of Shenmue, but it was ultimately a bit of a letdown and I enjoyed Skies of Arcadia and Jet Grind Radio a lot more.

Shenmue was a Awesome game...sure alot of people just didnt get it. Zeo is a fuccing idiot. Shemnue did as good as it could of on the dreamcast. If it was for the PS2, people would of been praising it as the next best thing. The X-Box's version of Shenmue2, looked like the dreamcast's too much. A new fresh game would make a lot of people happy

You can play the European release of Shenmue 2 on a US Dreamcast. I know, I have it.

When I said killer app, I said for SOME PEOPLE. I know quite a few people who loved the other two games so much that this, if true, could be the deal maker for Xbox 360.

(Would be for me, but for my chronic Gran Turismo addiction, meaning if I get a next gen console, it'd be PS3).

To Alkaiser.

That's seriously the dumbest arguement I've ever heard.

Just because a series has spanned over several consoles doesn't mean people only buy that particular console to play that particular game.

If we're going to use your logic, then why are people still buying and playing the Final Fantasy games? Hell, those games have been on the NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, Gamecube and there are more coming for the DS, PSP, PS3 and Revolution. Wow, why are people paying thousands of dollars just to play Final Fantasy?

Hey Venomous: you're a douchebag. Before you call someone an idiot, spell "fucking" right.

And no, I "got" Shenmue. It's a piece of shit. Simple as that. And no, people would not have been praising it as the next best thing just because it was on PS2. How stupid can you be?

Shenmue is NOT a good game. The fact that Shenmue 2 "looked like the Dreamcast game" has nothing to do with the fact that it completely bombed. People DON'T LIKE THE SERIES except for a few hardcore fans.

Of course, they're nuts.

Wivil:

Comparing FF to Shenmue is the dumbest thing you could do. FF stories are complete, one episode per installment. Doesn't matter where the next one shows up. You can play it if you want, if you don't, it's not like you're wondering what the hell happened to Terra and co.

Shenmue on the other hand is a continuous story, meaning you don't get the end unless you follow along with whatever console you're playing on. (And I know that you could play the US Shenmue 2 on the DC. That's how I played it. Lost my save files, and everything.)

Especially considering that this game was supposed to be 16 episodes long and come out in its entirity in less than a year and a half. Ryo's father has gone un-avenged for nearly 5 years now.

When I saw Shenmue listed as one of the most overrated games of all time in EGM, I was mystified. When I first played Shenmue on the DC I remember being told a story on a different level than anything else currently available. I even imported Shenmue 2 Euro from EB. After I couldn't save I just turned off the shit and never played the DC again. Honestly, wtf? The polarizing effects of this game are noteworthy. A love or hate affair I've seen repeated over and over by shit talkers and the faithful.

Zeo...why post about it if you HATE it? I skip over almost ALL SONY topics. Shemnue is almost like real life. You have money, your walkman takes batteries....your damn watch has indaglow. You have to get a job or hustle to get cash. They put you in a different world...plus awesome mini games. Hey just because somthing doesnt sell a million copies doesnt mean that it is not awesome. Daweoo sells way more cars then Bently...does that mean that Daewoo has the better car? Same point about X-box and Ps2. BTW Go google Shemnue 3. There has been petitions for a long time to make the game. There is the Shenmue dojo, where the fans talk about the awesome game. Shemnue is big...like I said...you just dont "get it".

#23- Sure, it's almost real life, and maybe that's the problem? Why do I want to play "mowing grass", or "watch the leaves", or everyones favorite "visit corner store and buy milk". Sure, if I'm ever in the mood to walk aimlesses for hours and speak to rude and boring people, I'll pop in Shenmue. Games are to escape reality, not invoke it.

It's not the attention to detail that kills the game, it's that the game is nothing but detail, no substance. The first one was the most expensive Life Emulator ever created. woo.

Daewoo and Bentley are both equally pieces of crap- one is the cheapest of asian import vehicles, next to a rickshaw, and the other is a defunct English car company now owned and manufactured by VW.

You are right about things which don't have a million copies not being cool- I am the only copy of me and I rule.

Anybody who says shenmue doesn't have substance is sick. The gamers of today are the ones with no substance. They'd rather buy and praise games like GTA (which isn't bad) and say it's the most incredible game on the planet, which is false. Shenmue is SO deep that mainstream gamers like yourselfes don't even give it the respect that it deserves, let alone realize it's greatness. It is true that just because it doesn't sell doesn't mean it sucks, take B2K for example, not the most talented groups of singers at all, but they sold like crazy, they appealed to SHALLOW people, mostly girls but back to what i was saying, for all the people that love shenmue and hate people that dislike it, just realize that the people that talk down about shenmue represent the shallowness of the gaming industry because there is a difference between not liking something not appealing to you, and leaving it at that, and having no respect or depth and just flat out disrespecting the game. You don't neec to disrespect everything that doesn't appeal to YOU. Grow up people, grow up.

I know some guys have different opinions about Shenmue, good or bad, popular or not, Shenmue is still the most promising game ever created. F.R.E.E. will undoubtly be the new medium of rpg in real life aspect, i was greatly amazed how am2 managed to think the scenarios, environments, and the story as well.

I played Shenmue 1 and 2 on my DC, not to mention that I also appreciated Shenmue 2 on my X-box. This game maybe boring at first, but once you played it --- you can't stop. well, atleast for me. So i'm still hopeful that shenmue 3 will reach the day with sunlight. Not to mention, Yu Suzuki lately announced that AM plus is ready to launch shenmue online next year.

I have been waiting for a new installment of Shenmue. I have played the first and second and loved them both. I hope it does come out on the 360, that would give me a reason to spend all that money on the system itself.
