Rare seeking programmer for DS project
Looks like Rare and Nintendo are back in cahoots, as a
recent job posting for a DS programmer on Rare's site suggests:
"Must be motivated, enthusiastic and skilled in C/C++ to join our dedicated handheld team, recently nominated for a Develop Industry Excellence Award. 3D skills also an advantage in creating high-profile titles for this unique system."
Could this sort of project bring Rare back to its N64 glory days? We'll keep you posted…

Yes! Rare=teh pwnage
Although, they have been in a slump lately with making good games. All the N64 games they made were the best. Hmm, I wonder, maybe a sequal to their game on the 64? Doubt it but a jet force gemini sequal would pwn. =)

In its coverage of this news, gamespot say this move was considered highly unlikely if not lunacy. Well can anybody else not see this: Its more of an attempt to bring more and more attention on DS rather than PSP (which already is not doing well). Sony is already not benefiting a good lot from PSP and MS just wants to tackle Sony on all ends. Using the legendary name of Rare and given its success with nintendo platform, not only MS will make lots of money on the software but also give a deep blow to Sony. This is entirely possible simply because MS probably does not consider the Revolution an as direct competitor as the PS3, so if supporting nintendo can mean damage to Sony, then game on for MS. Good move.
I just hope Mr.Kutragi stops with the useless word battle and once again drop another bombshell to make some of this more exciting.

I didn't know Rare made Banjo Kazooie / Tooie... Sweet!!! And #2, - "again drop another bombshell to make some of this more exciting" - I have a good feeling that the Sony will make a humongous impact on gaming history. So don't worry lol.

Rare is a non-factor. Their projects over the past 4 years are as follows:
Star Fox Adventures - A ho-hum Zelda clone with the Star Fox characters. Not very good.
Grabbed by the Ghoulies - A sucktastic waste of time.
Conker: Live and Reloaded - Port of an old game.
Otherwise, what have they done of note? Rare isn't anything special. They've only done a handfull of decent games (Killer Instinct, Conker) with the rest being nothing to get excited over.
The Rare factor: Whoever has Rare on their side has to factor in them being a money sink.

Ok #4.. So what about Goldeneye, Banjo Kazooe/Tootie, Perfect Dark.. They also made the Donkey Kong games; imagine what this could do for this hand-held system. If perfect-Dark came out on the DS it would be a top seller, same with Goldeneye, Conker, Banjo and Donkey Kong.
Rare are working on some long term projects such as Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero, sure Grabbed by the Ghoulies isn't exactly a good game but it's not aimed at people your age, it's aimed at children.
I won't say you are a complete retard because that’s just nasty, lets just say your intellectually challenged.

Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie were not that good. They were at best over-hyped scavenger hunts.
So, since 1997, we have the following titles that are undisputedly good:
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Conker
That is 3 titles in 8 years. Add two DK games, Battletoads and Killer Instinct to spread that to 7 games in 14 years.
Rare has been involved with around 60 different titles, and only 7 of them can be classified as good. That is a terrible track record if you ask anyone.
Rare has made absolute crap like Taboo: The Sixth Sense and Time Lord, and you've got what is best known as a totally underwhelming company.
LaughingTarget @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Furthermore, Donkey Kong Country was a child's game, so there is no excuse for Grabbed by the Ghoulies to be bad.
Even furthermore, Kameo has been in development for a long time and has jumped platforms three times. Previous games that tried this and succeeded: 0. Here is a list of titles that have done the multiple platform jump before release:
Duke Nukem Forever - Vaporware
Daikatana - Destroyed John Romero's career.
The future for Kameo isn't looking good as jumping platforms like that tends to screw up the programming.

Okay, LaughingTarget, obviously your not exactly the biggest fan of Rare, to say the least. But that doesn't mean that Rare hasn't had a succesful past. I remember Donkey Kong 64 was one of my favourite games of all time, and the crack about banjo kazooie? Just take a look at IGN's rating, or anywhere else for that matter....it was a well received game, but whether or not it sold well I don't claim to know.
My point is this: you can say that YOU think Rare is junk, but don't go trying to convice otherpeople, who love the old stuff Rare has done, that Rare is worthless.
