The funny thing is no one thinks he might be faking that attitude. Just like every time Nintendo makes a comment that sends them to the back of the line in gamers minds. I think the only one saying the truth right now is microsoft that's why we are already dissapointed by their showings. I remember everyone said the PSP was going to be $500 but actually was cheap and then it sold very well. By hyping the PS3 as a "Super computer" you would think that for $400 is a cheap system let alone it doesn't get a even lower price. That's what happened with the Ps2 (weren't banned from the middle east because the power enough to guide missiles?) but never did any super computer crap. Microsoft is showing their 360, so when the hype it, no one believes them since pretty much you know what to expect. Nintendo is saying nothing so everyone expect a cheap system with gimmicky controller or expensive system with virtual reality. Yet, thanks to the DS, we can expect something new or original. Sony is saying their "Multimedia Workstation PS3" can do this and do that. But Showing enough to make believe, but not really anything playable which I'm sorry to say is the main feature this thing is going to offer. Why? look at the facts. Sony is thinking of adding Cell processors to TV and DVD players, but wait! isn't supposed to be a revolutionary multimedia processor capable of doing all video effects and 3d things we see in movies? how about using it in your giant line of Media centric computers called VAIO???? if apple or Microsoft had something like this available to them they would use it where it counts!!! not silly games, the giant $$$ market of VideoFXs and 3d design, where a big powerful processor would do wonder no matter at what price, since big rigs can go up to $100,000, yet, we see it in appliances. ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? something smells fishy here, and it might be KUTARAGI.

I really don't see a problem with any of Kutaragi's comments. I use my PS2 to watch DVDs and run Linux in addition to play games, so it's not strictly a game machine, like my Gamecube. And he's absolutely right about the Cell processor: it's leaps and bounds better than a single-core or even a dual-core processor.

This whole "bash Kutaragi" frenzy is really silly. Companies always hype their products; Microsoft is enemy number one if you're looking for someone to accuse of that (and I'm not just talking about their gaming division).

If the "gaming press" wants to be taken seriously, they really should take a step back and think intelligently about what Kutaragi is saying before accusing him of being "off his rocker."

I remember when the cd-rom was going to come out for the Nintendo...I wish Nintendo would of gone through with it, I bet Nintendo does too. #15 killsone sucks. first of all and the movie you sw at e3 is fake. it was ALL cg except for I-8 and phantom saga wtv. we have ghost recon, AND socom. and wow ace combat. so so far you have 3 titles? while we have what, 40? read up.

The battle between both parties is getting outrageous but i do have to defend sony for the false allegations:

1) sony developed a cd-rom add on for the SNES. However, Nintendo changed its mind so sony decided to build its own system instead. No robbing here

2) The technical marvels by sony simply can not be compared to MS atleast in terms of harwdware. The ps2 emotion engine was a thoroughly researched and original products. MS simply took a intel processor and nvidia card. there was no research involved. similarly the cell is multi million dollar invention.

3) the cost of the ps3 should not be compared to the xbox because you simply get much more. yeah the hdd may be missing but we have built in wireless, more usb ports, built in giga net with outputs, dual video output(which can output to regular monitors as well), support for seven controllers and more through usb, even a blue ray disc drive. Even if the graphics performance of the systems is same, which is not atleast on paper as the ps3 seems to have more power, the ps3 is still a much better deal.

4) MS has only two cards and it has played them remarkibly well. Halo and Live. Everybody knows that ps2 has millions more online players than live ( just a few months back SOCOM II had more online players than the entire Live community). So dont undermine the ps online features. secondly live is not even free on weekdays. so the most touted feature of the xbox is not available on weekdays. yaay. any one in their sane mind should not buy an xbox 360 just for halo. #18 please tell me what FORTY exlucise titles does the xbox 360 have ? infact i just read that some studio decalred they are only going to develop for ps3. Factor-5 studios i think.

4) recently kutragi's comments have been outrageous, but you cant really hold it against him till you see what the ps3 can do. if Mercury and other companies have decided to use the cell processor for military and medical applications (some of the highest demanding apps) then there probably something worth while in it. about the whole linux and hdd thing: in one of the technical presentation a sony rep showed how the artchitecture of the ps3 can support multiple os. so lets see what happens.

5) despite everything, not much can be said about bill gates because he did become the richest man in the world for some reason. however, the xbox dept has showed brilliant marketing but poor innovations.

Ghazi Everything you say seems to be based purly on your own opinion, the cell is nothing special really. Its being used for military purposes because it's suited for that, it't been proven that cell is not best suited for games.

The Xbox was just a stepping stone for Microsoft to get into the games industry.

#20 Amongst the statements made by Kuturagi, even though it may seem farfetched, he speaks of servers used to hold all the info/saves wireless, therefore, it replaces the hdd, but doesn't account for those not online. I don't agree with the no hdd, however.

7 controllers is the limit of wireless connectivity, apparently you can connect the old PS controllers via USB. I think that it's breaking the mold and innovative whereas people thought the N64's 4 controllers was too cramping, but now it is the standard.

Apparently Xbox Live is really great, but if what Ghazi said is true, Live doesn't have as many users as PS Online, therefore meaning that XBL is competing with PS Online. Technically, the XBox has always seemed like a powerful PC with a video gaming OS. If PS hasn't been innovative with all the years of research for the next entertainment console, I don't know who has.

And the 360 always connected moniker was also used at the PS E3 press conference.

I cannot discount someone's creation based on the single character it's founder when so many were involved in the development of such a system. Kuturagi may be a tad arrogant, but he is proud of his creation and achievement, and one of many that represent the PS3's creation. I don't discount the system until i feel the controller, play their best game(s), and use the systems features. I like the Xbox graphic superiority, hdd, and custom soundtrack feature on many of the games. I haven't bought an extra remote for XB so i cannot watch dvd's (which sucks horribly). I played both Halo's and I might not be a first person kind of guy (even though I loved GoldenEye and Agent Under Fire), but i didn't really like it that much, which is arguably the reason for buying an XBox. I, in comparison, like the GTA series and MGS series on the PS. I do like GTA 3 and Vice City on the XBox better due to it's custom soundtrack feature, but came first to PS and gotta admit that it sucks to play through the same story with better graphics just because of the better graphics.

In all actuality, nothing can be drawn about the next gen except speculation based on past experience. If past experience serves the future, the Xbox will dominate as the PS1 did over established VG companies like Nintedo and Sega. However, the XB came in a distant second this last console cycle despite superior graphics and online capabilities, so that would mean that the PS3 would win. The PS2 came out after the DreamCast and put it to rest. What this means is that the past is not full proof, one cannot predict the course the next gen of games will take, only speculate, and as I just described, speculations contradict themselves based on past experiences anyways. So as an idea to all that are as anxious as me, Let's wait and see what happens.

The worst that could happen is that one system dominates this console war, dictator style, and all innovation die. I don't want that, so I will support all 3 systems unless one absolutely sucks beyond belief (like N-Gage or Virtua Boy suck).

P.S., Nintendo apparently had their fair share of bashing with their "Think Outside The Box" and "Don't hop on the bandwagon to the Station yet..." advertising. Along with the XBox French Laundromat Advertisement bash session. So let's leave the childish banter amongst these companies, shall we?

There must be some reasons, why Sony wanted Apple to use the Cell but His Steveness refused to do so, because the Cell seemed in his eyes to be quite a crappy kind of chip. Perhaps it is good for a gaming machine (it still has to prove though) but you cannot use it for a multitasking Mac, and it will be an even bigger problem to get a Cell into a portable machine like a PowerBook. You cannot use it in Sony's Vaios, they depend on Windows (wh? won't run on a Cell), or do you think Sony will preinstall Linuc on its computers?

Nobody really knows anything about the Cell's real-world performance and with Sony's promises concerning other hardware in mind I don't think it will be that great... (I don't like the 360 either nor the Revolution...)

this guy is becoming the new "Hiroshi Yamauchi" of this generation, which was Nintendo's last president. He is the sole responsable person for the creation of the Playstation. He asked for the cd-rom to Phillips and then Sony, but later, Sony wanted to control the development by using non-protected cds, and wanted Nintendo to allow them to print all the cds, which made Yamuchi crazy since they controlled the cartridge manufacturers. So they just said to Sony to drop all development since they were not interested anymore, so Sony Turn to play on Nintendo's playground by making a Playstation System, with almost no developers other than Namco which wanted the board for the arcades, soon everyone wanted to try their Development kit so they made the Yarouze to start creating for the system. The rest is History and Sony tried to kill Nintendo but brought Microsoft and a bunch of startups to the market and killed Sega which was almost dead by too many development teams doing home (segacd, sega32x, nomad, saturn, Dreamcast) and arcade hardware with their expensive controllers (jetski, snowskis,maracas, punching bags, skateboards, fishing reels, telescopes, laser guided sports games, and voice recognition) and software over a 6 year period.

From What I've read about the Cell processor it's just a big number cruncher so it can handle 1 thing at a t ime but really fast, but most processors are multitreaded from multitasking, some the cell can't do. It has 8 cores but only 7 are going to work since taxing the processor to its full capacity makes it melt. I got this from Tom's hardware a while back, so who knows. also I read from engadget that the 3 processors were asked by developers to be similar so porting would be easier, but Nintendo said no, and they are going with "every game must be exclusive of the revolution and won't be able to be ported to another system". So the Cell is just a extremely fast calculator that may burn if pushed and the Xbox's is just a nice one that last.

No, the reason only 7 are used is due to defects. It is very hard to produce an error-free 8 cells so that's why they cut it down to 7 despite the presence of 8 cells.
And Ken has become the new Yamauchi. An arrogant blowhard. That's what happens when you get to the top of the heap I guess.
I think the design of the PS3 is advanced but whether it can meet expectations is another matter. For PSP, they met the expectation of playstation 2 graphics on the go but they compromised on things like disc transfers since that would tax the battery.
One thing I can say though is that Sony produces atrocious quality consoles. Defects up the wazoo. I don't see Sony losing in this gen, but I do see Microsoft closing the gap bigtime.

It may be pre-rendered, but if you believe that the next-gen systems won't be able to put out graphics of that quality you're in for an amazingly pleasant surprise. If you'd try playing Half-Life 2 or Doom 3 on a decent PC I think you'd agree with me. The next generation of graphics are going to blow everyone away.

So Jobs searched for a new chip, of course also looked for the Cell, Kutaragi wanted to convince him and also offered more Sony technology. Sounds a bit strange, that Sony wants to license the Cell at these costs to Apple. There are some possibilities, why Sony would want Apple to use it (scale, further deveolpment, image...) but it just doesn't seem to be a good computer processor, just as you said, no multithreading...

Nobody knows how the cell will perform in games. Sony may be smarter than everyone else. Apple switched chips because of reported lack of performance in the cell. Nintendo has gone with a chip similar to the 360. They may be all wrong and sony may be right. Many game designers in Japan feel that the PS3 will initially be slower, but may have a higher potential in a few years. Many of the cells strengths (floating point calc. etc.) aren't suited for the way games are programmed today. Many feel that out of the box you will get to see what the 360 can really do because it's processors were designed to work with the way games are made. Ken may be crazy but his is not stupid. Sony dosen't need to win the console war. The ps3 is a blueray player that also plays games. They are currently losing the next gen DVD format war. If they can sell a million of so PS3's then they have leverage. They hope that the industry will recognize that there are already millions of bluray players on the market and adopt it's format. Sony recieves money for every bluray disc pressed. This is the reason for the PSP and the reason more movies are released than games. The European release of the PSP will actually focus on movies. Sony stands to make more money than it ever would in the console race. It's only gamble is that it could have millions of PS3 that can't play a majority of movies. Sony knows this well, it has lost two other format wars (betamax, minidisc).

Who cares if apple didn't want cell. That doesn't mean it sucks. If you want to argue about hearsay, like the articles on the web where MS execs bash Sony with, fine. What you should be looking at are the articles that have major devs like EA and Epic saying how good the PS3 is and how the cell is actually gets the job done very well.

As the 40 games @ launch, that's only because the xbox360 comes out later this year. Sony still has over half a year to go. You really think Sony won't increase the game count? Be serious.

Halo and the other awesome titles will make my Xbox worthwhile, and God of War and the other (admittedly not as amny) titles will make my Playstation worthwhile.

And I will be happy, while I guess the rest of the people that post comments will continue arguing who has the biggest...err, clock speed.

Trying to compare 360º and PS3 is like trying to compare Apple to PC. Is not going to happen! They are both really good for what they are intended. The fact is that Xbox has just put already existent material together and called it a game console sucks. Mean while Sony has developed and re-invented the gaming console systems, always pushing to do something new. Xbox 360º, are apple computers, no matter how you look at it. Which I thought it was ironic and sad that they had to go to the competition in order to create the next gen system. Then again, Apple is that much richer now hehehe. It all comes down to the games and what you will use the system for.

#23 Danny Boy: Sony was developing a CD-rom based system for Nintendo. Nintendo at the last minute had cold feet and said no and released N64. Sony then decided to use what they had created, sign a bunch of gaming developers up and thus the birth of PlayStation. The rest...is video game history.

Honestly i'm chearing for the 360, but i do not doubt the PS3's or the Revolution's capabilities. they are all going to be great systems and i'll probably end up buying all of them in the long run.

Personally my first console was the PS2 very few games later i put it away in my closet and got an xbox collected upward of a few hundred games which some sucked and some were great, but just now retired my ps2 and got the gamecube just for zelda.

as far as this war ps3 vs 360 it's getting annoying. both are going to be powerful systems according to technical specifications they gonna be fairly equal. Yet both will have their strong points and their weak points.

I'm tired of hearing all this BS of dual screen outputs and 7 controllers and a bunch of extra ones on USB...i have all current gen consoles (not counting portable) and personally there are very very very very few games that are multiplayer and are actually good (i hate sports games and racing gets old quick) in a sence there's no need for that many controllers. can you imagine the split screen 7 ways on a 30" or less tv? same with the dual video output on the PS3...how many of you have 2 HDTVs standing next to each other? i got 1 60" HDTV but to fit 2? more less in the same room? god damn!

anyways only time will tell but my fav system this gen is the xbox...and i hope they will keep it up :)
