First playable PS3 game shown to press

As well as announcing new PSP firmware, Sony used their Playstation press event in Japan today to demonstrate a playable PS3 game. The game in question is a PS3 version of "Gundam" which involves massive robots with guns in urban environments, tasty. The video of the demo looks distinctly unpolished, it's missing smoke and any form of physical processing. Maybe the developers were waiting on the recently announced deals with third party physics companies. The still shots feel much more impressive when you consider that they're taken from scenes of a playable game.

Wow, great start. Needs some work for the final product obviously, but it's great to see some actual footage for once.

I'm downloading them now.

Oh, and considering the PS3 launches in 2006, it's almost expected to still have bugs.

Looks ok but the landscape is so incredibly drab and the robots movements look so stiff (yes, I know theyre robots but it looks weird even for a robot)

How is that a great start? That was very dissapointing, i was expecting much more from the PS3 and that was just 3 Robots walking down a road.. How will it fare with thousands of robots on screen are firing with physics calculations and some proper scenery?

I just watched the 2nd video on IGN and it gets worse. The 'exploding' mech is hysterically bad.

I have to agree with you, why did they even bother showing this rubbish. They should stick to what they know best, full motion Video.

this is where the dissapointments begin. and the bullshit starts to unfold itself. into reality. where all the fanboys come to a sudden screaching break, look at the realtime games, fall on their asses and start to cry.

this just proves that the ps3/360/rev is the greatest and the ps3/360/rev is the lamest! oh yeah, this system i have decided to like because i bought the console by its maker in the previous generation is definitely the best, and everything proves it! and that measly stuff that makes the other guy look good? it doesn't matter! only our advantage in graphics/teraflops/unified shaders/biometric controllers matters, as opposed to their advantages in graphics/teraflops/unified shaders/biometric controllers! take THAT!

That looks like it's running on a PS2 not a PS3!

Those framerates looked less than ideal.

Compare the images on the site (E3 pre-rendered) to the demo game running and its day and nite. Altough not bad as far as the robots gear but other than that needs major work in every aspect. I just think that for a demo running on a g70 with a 3.2 ibm chip would have had better framerate. The demo of Gears of War in its alpha ran better with effects and other creatures than this. Thank god that no one cares about gundam over here in the US.

Quilty-Harper is obviously on drugs if he thinks anything about this demo is impressive.. Who let this guy write for Joystiq?! He also seems to bash everything to do with Microsoft.

this video proves only one thing...an early, unfinished video clip of a game destined to get reviews in the sixes does not really look all that great.

This doesn't look anything like Kill zone 2! Are you telling me KZ2 was a movie?? I thought that dude said KZ2 was rendered in real time. These robots move like some kind of crappy claymation. Sony, you better not be trying to sell me the BS3 on hype. I got suckered on the PS2 that way. Won't be fooled again.

I thought all games Sony brought to E3 were real time. Looks like another smoke and mirrors job by Sony.

Remember that PlayStation 3 E3 Gundam demo that blew fans away? Although we had our suspicions, Bandai confirmed today at Sony's PlayStation Meeting press conference that the video consisted of pre-rendered footage designed to resemble what a PS3 game might look like

??? There were TONS of articles and blogs on the net after E3 talking about Sony's presentation. Apparently most people missed them. If I remember correctly all but only a select few of the game demos in Sony's lineup were videos, KillZone 2 included, so this is no surprise. However in Sony's defense, when is the release date of this game? If it is still a year or two off, then there isn't AS much to worry about...

Wow some ppl are still clueless and thought the demos were real time i think it was on this site and a bunch of other sites that none of sony's things were running on real time just some overhyped prerendered crap....But its still gundam looks good :D at least the pic i cant dl cuz im on good old 56k :D

I like where the next gen systems are going. I see enough in this video to appriciate what some of the games I enjoy playing might look like in the future. I look forward to seeing more... fyi, gundam games are not what I personally enjoy.

I am a gamer that enjoys games that I like, no matter what system/publisher/programmer makes them.

What is your beef? Can whoever said this looks like a PS2 game please point me in the direction of that game. Christ, if there is a PC game that is rendered as well point me at that. You idiots who are claiming this is "proof" that the PS3 is lame are showing just how ignorant of the real world of game development you are. You expect full frame rates, smooth animation and special effects for ANY game that is AT LEAST a year away from completion? Much less for a system that doesn't even have the real dev. kits yet? If you read the article, you'd know that this demo isn't using ANY of the seven SPU units yet either....so it probably isn't even scratching the surface of what the system can do. It's so early they aren't using a major part of the hardware yet.

Let the XBox fanboys scream "This is teh sux!!!111." All of us with actual BRAINS in our heads will wait and see actual games that use all the hardware before passing judgement on the whole system.

A lot can happen with a year of development. Calm down, children.

Each SPE isn't used in the same way as a Core is, it doesn't even have direct access to memory and can't do a lot of things a CPU core can do. All this hype about the cell is unjustified and is frankly a load of rubbish; it's fast I�ll give you that but when applied to games it doesn't cut it. Sony have made out that Each SPE is the same as a core? Whats that about?

With the Xbox 360 it actually has 6 REAL cores (3 DUAL core possessors)

So even if they did use at 7 SPE's how much of a difference would it really make?

It is not a good idea to use a Bandai game to determine the power of anything. Bandai just plain sucks and hasn't put out a decent looking game to date (or decent playing for that matter).

It doesn't matter who makes the fastest system, or who has the prettiest looking box.

What it comes down to is what kind of games do you like...
Write down the games you like and the features you want in a system. Wait until you are given enough information from the systems you are interested in buying and make an educated and responsible decision.

Right now, as of today, there isn't enough information out for me to make my decision. If you can make that... all the power to you, but stop telling me what I need to buy.

Wow..I dont even like Sony, but I think the game looks great. At least the screen shots I seen look almost real. Maby some people complain too much

as for the quality, this is video from an in the room tri-pod'd camera, not direct feed. notice the camera flashes you periodicly see in the videos?
that said it's probably way early in development. not seeing a hud is a good clue to that. i am more excited about the level of distance drawn in the demo then anything else about it. finally true cityscapes without redraw.

and as far as all this system drama ps3 versus xbox360 everyone chill, we are all going to sell our dreadfull 360 launch games back to gamestop for credit on the ps3 so it's all good! there is no more one system household anymore.

The Xbox 360 seems to have the broadest selection of games at the moment.

Sny, MS, Ndo) run by software programmed by other people control who you are. Do you know how you got so brainwashed? If you don't know, you should go seek help in a good way. You are what you are, not what material items you choose.

Here is some advice for you kids, no matter what system you like: 1.Never trust a salesman 100%... and trust that most people want to sell you somthing.
2.Learn what you like and try diversity ocassionally, you never really know until you try it.
