PS3 is gonna cost ya!

The world's favourite console managing lunatic, Ken Kutaragi, has come out and said Sony Playstation 3 will be
rather expensive. (There's a shocker, eh!)
They can't say the price right now (most likely because they don't even know it), but it will be, quote, pricey. As we
know, Microsoft is taking a pretty hefty hit on the Xbox to get it into your living room and to win your mind.
The expected retail price of the PS3 is a rather stiff $400!

Considering the PS3 will have a next gen high-def DVD player, I am not surprised.
It will be interesting to see if people will ante up another $100 more than what a console typically goes for.
Well, I guess $400 is not expensive, since Kutaragi has dubbed the PS3 as a "computer"! hehe
andy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
$400 eh? I wonder if I can just pay $100 and drop all the useless crap they've decided to charge ridiculous amounts for..like HD DVD, and multi-screen HD support and 'Media Center'.
How about just selling a f***ing Games machine, how about that?
Icelawn @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
The good news just keeps rolling in.....
Vagabond Artist @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
xbox360 looks more appealing every day....
Yo @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Sony like to sell overprice item. PS2 cost less than $100 to make, and it debut at $299!!! You fans got rip. Sony doesn't like taking loss on their product, so deal with it PS boys.
Tesla @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Yo, do you like just spewing out numbers or do they just plop out of your ass?
I've found that Sony systems seem to be overhyped in price by the media quite often. They said the PSP was going to cost $350 and others even said $500!! I think Sony is going to go with 300-350 for PS3. They can stand to take the hit and usually do when it comes to systems because the games aren't getting any cheaper.
I think we should be starting more forums on how games are going to be costing $60 in the next gen. That's more costly than a slightly more expensive console unit, which you know will soon turn into a price war after a few months of being released.
Thundercizzle @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
No Surprise. I wonder how many sad Sony fans like myself will still be forking over the hefty sum. . The price may affect their initial launch, but I think they'll pick up in sales in the long run big time.
Yo @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Tesla, I've read it somewhere yesterday and now I can't find the link for it. Sony doesn't like to give out their manufactoring cost, so I can't seem to find it. Sony is planning on selling PS2 for $100 because they have manufactor so much PS2 that it's so cheap to produce them.
kuroshi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Slow down Ebonydad, the bluray player is not really next gen yet. Currently the movie industry is siding with HD-DVD. If it stays as is, most next gen DVDs will not play on the PS3. Guess there is always the movies from Sony studios. That's a lot of money to gamble on the next betamax. Think I'll wait for the price cuts.
Brian @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
And that's without a hard drive or a router?
Yeah, Sony can bite me.
Dralt @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Only $400! Wow, great...can't wait to buy it.
Try to find a PC with the same computing capacity at that same price.
This is the deal of the century.
Ghostly @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Yo, no company likes to give their manufacturign cost data, so most dont, but by looking at the actual hardware of the system. to say sony stiffs their customers is wrong, dotn get me wrong, im not a sony fan, but the cost of their systems is pretty damn high.
bloomberg.com reports
Each PSP sells for 19,800 yen in Japan and currently costs Sony 30,000 yen to make
this means each PSP costs sony about 80$ (10,200 yen) to sell. that means EACH psp sold costs sony money, (which they would hope to make up in game sales)
what makes you think the PS2 launch went any different?
Dralt @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM

Sony will be fast to release on Blu-Ray all movies that come out from their studios.
The movie industry at large, though, will probably be slow at adopting any standard.
So, in my opinion, the leader will make the market.
Ghostly @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
#10,
okay, you see the PS3 is not really a computer. it is a gaming system, it is hampered as a computer in that it cannot really, you know, take user input to do high level mathematical computation, you know, the reasons professionals use computers and computing power.
doesnt mean its bad, just im sick of hearing gaming systems called computers., there's nothing wrong with calling them gaming systems.
guslav @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
let's wait and see how much the 360 is. if it's $299, as most rumors have it, then sony may be forced to cut the initial price of the ps3. if it's $360, as other, though seemingly more speculative, rumors have it, then $400 is really not a bad price, comparatively.
jc @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I would like to hear what Sony is doing as far as DRM is concerned. Am I going to be able to get Hi-Res out of my current equipement?
I would have to guess that the price of the PS3 will be directly related to the price of and how many X360s are sold before the PS3 comes out... Sony might need to play catchup.
Xlash @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I can't wait to buy back my DVD-movie in new HD Bluray disc!
I so love to buy things back, again, and again over a few years. I feel so happy to pay a few bucks to have the same shit again! I feel lucky when they release it on a different format!
Damn, are you guys morons or what! We live in a digital world, just sold the freakin digital file rights! I'd like to buy MP3s and DVD's contents.... but they are so afraid of piracy that they don't offer customers anything but shit.
Captain Skull @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
i fully agree with #2
thats why im leaning towards the revolution. ps3 and 360 are boasting that they're not game machines they're entertainment units while revolution is saying it's a game machine, thats what its made for, thats what it'll do.
i think nintendo is finally going to gain back the fanbase it had in the late 80's early 90's now that the fad of dvd player/media center/cd player/toaster/laundry machine/game system has finally died down.

suck my ass sony!!!!! wow, how can they expect us to buy this piece of shit system for over $300. Cell processing my ass!!! it was dumped. this new processor was just pulled out of the ass of the shitty powerpc design. yeah sony real good move, promise innovation and produce a bag full of shit. amd 64 processors are faster than the cell, which uses the shittiest pipeline ever, over 48 stages, lol. Well, idiots just see numbers, oh well. Looks like sony wins this round too.
Spartacus @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I agree that $400 isn't a ludicrous price tag for the next gen systems given their proposed (and unconfirmed) specs. If the PS2 debuted at $300, then we could only expect the next gen to cost more. I wouldn't be surprised if it cost MORE than $400 actually. I'd be just as surprised if the 360 sells for $299. I think $400 is the breaking point for many though. If Sony prices the PS3 at anything over that mark, I think it might hurt them, especially with Nintendo coming in at the same time with the low ball. But we'll see...
BoB @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
An Extra $100 for a System that has actualy been proven to Run Slower than the Xbox 360? What about the extra cost if you want a HDD? Another $70? Even when the Xbox 360 comes with one.
James Bont @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Wow, a #400 gaming machine. By the way, I heard that Krazy Ken said that the PS3 is actually aimed at casual gamers. I guess that the PS3 will sell well, because most of the world's gamers are casual. By the way, I don't see why not having HD is such a big deal.
Danny Boy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Waid a second, they said:
"Ken Kutaragi, has come out and said Sony Playstation 3 will be rather expensive"
Sony are alredy going to make a Huge loss on the System (At $400) so it's actualy possible it might be more than that, you never know. ($450?)
There has been no official word that the price will actualy be $400.
chill @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Well Alex maybe it was during the N64 era, when Nintendo went with cartridges instead of cds, out of greed. Or because they ride the same charaters from the 80's and early 90's and havent created anything new since then, other then pokicrapman. I luv watching DS fans get all excited about mario 64 a straight port of a ten year old game. Wow great innovation! And part of Rev big pump is, wow you get to pay for and play games from the nes snes era...Oh boy arent you so lucky. I really like going back to play games I beat a hundred times through back then. Also thanks for destroying Star Fox and turning Metroid into yet another just-above-bland fps...I really look forward to Mario kart 250, hey whatdoyaknow it plays just like the first one.

Sony Lie, they have a History of it.
Sonic_Extreme @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Consoles that cost over 400$ or more are hard to sell. I wont buy no console for 400$. Video game playing doesn't mean I have to break the piggy bank just to get it. I can wait. Since I have kids I have to buy 2 consoles. One for me and one for them. umm 800$+ games+ misc + tax. Over 1k$.. Thats if its at 400$ who knows no official price yet. X360 same way who knows what the price will be no official word yet also. I just hope its 299$.
For people who are single might easy drop over 400$ for a console but for people who have responsiblities and kids cant just drop money unless they are welthy.
Any console that will sell for 400$ will not sell well until its price goes lower. xbox, ps or nin. Ala 3do, saturn or Neo Geo.
And PS3 with all those things that it has just to look fancy, I dont see a price drop till well in 2007 fall maybe. Lets just hope they do there studying and have x360 at 299$, ps3 at 359$ and rev at 199$.
Alex @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Thanks Chill,
I agree, the Nintendo characters are tired, but so is the whole industry. I don't have the slightest interest in this generation of game consols because they are basically the same as last generation, but with better graphics and power. However, I bought a DS and love it, simply because it is an entirely new type of gameplay. I'm not very interested in the Mario rehashes, but I imported Electroplankton and Band Brothers. Right now, for me Nintendo is the only interesting company in the industry and I like their "innovation" strategy because it has gotten me interested in gaming again. I'm looking forward to seeing the new Rev controler and I think it is a fantastic idea to bring back all the games of Nintendo's history...games I haven't played in 15 years...Especially now with the retro coolness of 8-bit art and all that. I think this move will really help more people to recognize videogames as an artform, something I have been wanting to happen for years. Maybe then we will get more indy developers working on interesting games for the home consols.
Oh, and the Mario movie...you mean "The Wizard"? I thought that was incredible as a kid. My friends and I were convinced we could make it to the Nintendo world championships [that of course never existed]. I had only played my friends Nintendo, then after I saw the movie I bought one for the brilliant Mario 3.
Pretty Obvious @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Hes not talking about the Wizard. Hes talking about that shit ass Mario Bros. movie starring John Leguizamo as Luigi and Anthony Hopkins as Bowser. If you havent seen it, consider yourself lucky.
GTgamer @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Alex fortunately has no memory of the Super Mario Bros movie. He is lucky...I only saw a few bits of it back then and was scarred for life. The Wizard on the other hand was a pretty decent long format commercial...introducing, the Power Glove! Oh, snap!
Sorry, at $400+ dollars, I predict that it's going to be a "wait 'til it drops" scenario. I don't think ppl are going to rush to get it and pay the price to have a Blu-Ray player because it's not the established HD optical standard yet and there won't be much Blu Ray content out (think UMD). It's not like the PS2 and its DVD playback capability at launch...DVD was mostly a sure thing back then. Not to mention the problem consoles tend to have with optical drive life cycles, I'd rather (and already do) use a stand alone player for optical media viewing/listening.
Danny Boy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I love Nintendo and all but all this talk about "Innovation" seems a bit silly, the only innovative thing they have ever made is the DS (And maybe Virtual Boy) Other than that they just bring out great re-makes of classic games on consoles that are not too different from the other consoles out, not too innovative.
I hope the REVO does actually have some really cool controller that makes you smile every time you pick it up, much like I do when I go through my old-school Nintendo collection.
chill @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM

MuddBoggr @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
I can see $350, but $400 may be too much to ask the average parent to shell out...esp. with no games in the box. That is just not a competitive price point for a gaming machine in the USA.
If Sony does launch at $400, they better have this thing running so sick that it just crushes the performance of the 360. If the performance question is even debatable, they'd better launch at a more competitive price. The 360 will probably be discounted by the time it launches, and Halo 3 will be on the way, after all.
vakerorokero @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Good Marketing. That's the only thing this means. By saying this thing is going to be very expensive, gives:
A) A chance for the competitors to rest on the cheaper systems, expecting a really expensive system.
B) people will buy the thing in masses once they find that this system will will go below the manufacturing price and believe Sony is losing about $300 on each one. They already did it with the Ps2 and the PSP.
Bragging about being expensive doesn't sound like a good marketing campain, even from Microsoft point of view, which is the the Hummer of the PC business.
Arch-360 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
lol #44. your pathetic. your telling US, not to believe numbers on paper from a company who delivered 100% on the first xbox. comapared to the "nipple" of the king of cows, sony, who has never not once delivered, and who has been milking you of money with shitty hardware, and lies. you know why its going to be that expensive? because sony doesnt care. MS is taking hit so we can buy their system. sure their main objective is money. but you dont think they dont ENJOY what they do? you think J Allard wakes up every morning saying "ahh crap another day of boring gaming" no body sais that. they take a hit in price for the gamers to enjoy the system at a price they can afford. with hardware that doesnt brake down. then people wonder why sony has so many sales. they dont have 90 million sales. they have 50 million sales with 40 million broken down PS2s. thats what milking is. and i guarantee you its not "work more hours to buy our system"
chill @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
Arch-360 Are you legally retarded? Micro takes a hit on ever system because they care??? Hahahaha sorry but no, the reason they take a hit in price is to match the competition [Sony] prices...
They [being Sony] must be doing something right here's some numbers for ya!
Sony has shipped 91.62 million PS2 units worldwide as of July 20. Of those, 37 million were in North America, 21.41 were in Japan and Asia, and 33.21 were in Europe. PS2 software has shipped a cumulative 863 million during the same period: 395 million in America, 176 million in Japan, including Asia, and 292 million in Europe.
When including original PlayStation game sales, the software figure jumps to 1.822 billion units: 767 million in America, 461 million in Japan and Asia, and 594 million in Europe and PAL regions. Overall, the PlayStation and PS2 are currently available in 120 countries with a library of more than 13,000 games: more than 7,700 for the PlayStation and 5,200 for the PS2.
OUCH hurts a little huh Arch? Seeing the company you hate so much owning 70% of the console market...

AND learn how to dish it out as well. kill them with facts! not lies. cuz at the end of the day, is all your saying is lies, your just gunna look like a complete idiot.
Arch-360 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:47PM
chill, MS doesnt need to compete in price, its sony whos playing catchup this gen. what you fail to realize is that the only reason SONY has so many sales (including the millions of poeple who have bought a PS2 5 times over) is because they had NO competition for a whole YEAR. so if you wanted to buy a console at the time who would you go to? they could have labeled a price of a thousand dollars and people would have bought it. and while you say MS doesnt care, its actually an entire other division in another builsing in another state. MS has nothing to do with it, its like a last name of a person.its another group of poeople. each one of them like a person who has just made a kickass flash movie and wants to share it with everyone on the net. you think they could have made such an online service if they didnt care about their job?
the place isnt run by bill gates who people hate for X reasons, its run by J Allard and that other guy i dont remember his name. bill gates hardly has anything to do with it. its like you finishing an art project in school and cant wait till you see the finished model and cant wait to show it to your parents when you get home. or your friends. for them its a console wich they cant wait to get peoples opinions. in the end i guarantee you its about the money, but in the process of making a great console ill bet its probably alot of fun going to work and working on games.its that group of people who care about their job.
oh and by the way they could have put the console at a price where they would NOT take any hits and it would be cheaper than the PS3.
