Seems Sony isn't the only one who has less-than-idealistic quarterly profits. Nintendo, who chose this quarter
to release less than ten games on its home console - and none of those were exactly hot-sellers - have reported an
operating profit 80% lower than last year. And despite how well the Nintendo DS is selling (6.6 million so far),
Nintendo still reported an operating profit of 3.75 billion yen (about $33 million). Still a profit, but compare
it with this time last year - 17.47 billion - it does not look as good. But I guess it was to be expected with
such a small release of GameCube titles. And they are still reporting a profit, so this is not exactly bad news
for the company.

This is considerably better than Sony's reported financial "loss". Just my own opinion, but I would very much like to see Sony get bumped off of the console map.
You know what they say... the bigger they are...

I couldn't (cldnt?) agree more; my guess is that many people are just holding off on buying consoles since there's been so much talk about all the next-gen's to be released in the next year. On top of that, if people do buy consoles, they are buying them at a pretty low price, and this generally means that the companies lose a lot more money on each console sold (its the games where they usually make the money back).

Certainly game(s) like Zelda will help ease the transition, especially with a backward compatible system like the rev. Bear in mind that Nintendo must have been spending a fair bit on Rev RandD this quarter and it's all the more impressive. Same applies to Microsoft and Sony, except they both made a loss (well the MS entertainment division did anyway).
Come to think of it it's a little misleading to portray Sony's LOSSES as "less-than-idealistic quarterly profits" (though i don't know for sure about SCEE)

Misleading to call Sony's loss "less-than-idealistic quarterly profits" Not here... I've noticed a definite Sony bias on Joystiq. Personally I like Sony and Nintendo (not really to fond of Microsoft, but it wouldnt stop me from buying their console if it blows away the PS3 and Revolution) but here we get Nintendo bashing and alot of love for SOny, I would prefer a more nuetral stance.

Yeah, I think my main problem is that I try too much to cover up my Nintendo fantacism - I do adore Nintendo, and have a bias, but I try my hardest not to present that when I post and to be fair, but in doing so I think I make too much of an effort and then it appears I'm too hard on Nintendo. Nothing meant by it, in terms of showing Sony love, I meant it more as just a cute way to say they sucked it up.
*Shrugs* I'll keep working on hitting the neutral level. Until then, critique me in the right direction.

Im not a Nintendo fan, but it would suck if they werent making games. Its great for us gamers to have three systems on the market, so I hope all three have success! [Some more then others].

In my oppinion the Gamecube is guff and I don't play on it. I still use my PS2 and XBOX all the time and my PSP is so much better than my DS although the Gameboy SP is quite good considering.
Next gen. Sony will win because it's a Playstation, Microsoft will ocme second because it is a better machine than the Ninty, and Nintendo will lose because of there 'laid back approach' and after the Gamecube I wont be buying a Revolution. The N64 was great then it went downhill.
Does anyone else think the Dreamcast was a great console (and in my oppinion better than the Gamecube)?

Danaldinho, have you ever played Pikmin, Pikmin 2, Mario Kart DS, Zelda, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Resident Evil, Super Monkey Ball (yes I know the last two games are on the other systems too, but still.)
How can you not play a gcn, do you even have a gcn?
Dreamcast was good, (Monkey ball was originally for that system) but sadly it's Sony's fault hyping up their PS2 and their "Toy Story" graphics.
