Having fun with Revolution rumors
Update: It hasn't even been 3 hours and all the rumors are solved. Thanks guys. For proof that this rumor is false, check out this page (square two) and this link (go to pages 1, 2, 3, and 6).
It's almost as if Nintendo's running the cheapest ad campaign since Halo's ilovebees.com (does anyone remember Nintendo's parody of that? Very funny). By making the Revolution a complete and utter mystery, every curious party has hyped the machine through their hypotheses and 'artistic renditions' of possible controller designs. All that is known about the machine is that it looks like an external DVD drive (which I like, don't get me wrong) and that it's online service is an old-school video game iTunes. Needless to say, rumors are abound on Nintendo's upcoming contender in the console wars, and here's the latest.
French web site JeuxVideo.com has posted images that might be made by the
Revolution. For those who dont speak French (I knew those classes would pay off some day), in a gist the site
says that they received these pictures from a Japanese web site, which claims that these pictures were released by
Nintendo to show that its next-gen baby will be more than up to the task visually. I cant state enough that this
is just a rumor - but hey, a fun rumor at that; at least its not another controller mock-up. And if it was true,
the Revolution would seem more than capable of keeping up with next-generation technology.
Observe and enjoy.

Thought I'd add this as a comment rather than extend the already-long length of the post. One of the commenters on the french site purpots that many of these pictures come from http://www.3dtotal.com , but I have looked through the "characters" and "cartoons" slides only to come up nil. If any other investigators out there with time on their hands care to uncover the "truth" of these pictures (kill the rumor), I'll keep looking but help me out, too.
Zachary @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Did you ever really think that the Revolution wouldn't be able to keep up with next-gen technology? Just because Nintendo isn't hollering about their new hardware every chance they get doesn't mean that the software is not going to look as good if not better than the other next-gen consoles. Look at RE4 for the Gamecube compared to the screens for the PS2 version.........
Simon @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Wow, that's too good to be true.
I'ld rather suspect some french student wants to jump on the get-a-job-by-faking-revolution-media bandwagon.
Karmakin @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Yeah, if you told me that RE4 was a next-gen game, I'd agree with you. It's not just in the power of the system, it's in what you do with the system. Even the PS2 can be taken to absolutly absurd levels (Hi Criterion! Burnout 3 and the upcoming Black), once you optimize it. And that's what it's all about. It's all about the optimization.
And I suspect that the Revolution is going to start ahead of the other two systems. Why? Because it's based on the GameCube platform. Don't be shocked if the launch games for the Revolution look just as good or even better (and for sure play smoother), than the launch titles for the other two next-gen systems.
Now, the other two are great systems, and there's no doubt that over time they're capable of more than the Revolution will be, at least graphically. But there's three questions to ask about that.
1) How soon?
2) How much?
3) Will anybody care?

Zachary, there are many people who remember the hype leading up to the current generation. Almost every gaming "journalist" said that the GameCube would have far inferior graphics to the higly touted Emotion Engine "supercomputer." Of course, when the GC was actually shown, there was plenty of crow to go around. Still, many of these people chose to ignore the obvious superiority of the GC in public and focus on the specifications the companies released. Sony's theoretical numbers put the GC's real world numbers to shame if you didn't know there was a difference.
Nintendo fans like me would think the "journalists" would learn from the last generation. Of course, it is probably the Nintendo fans who should learn. No matter how awesome the Revolution turns out to be, most people have already written it off and will do anything to prove they are right even if it isn't the truth.
We must remember, this is the country that RE-elected George Bush.
iiago @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Actually you'd think Nintendo would learn - they've GOT to watch their PR.
I'm sure the Rev will be graphically about the same level as the PS3/Xbox360, but everyone's latched onto their comment at E3 that it would be "2-3 times fast than Gamecube", compared it to the ridiculous claims of Sony and Microsoft and concluded that Nintendo's next machine will be grossly underpowered. (and who could blame them? It's all the figures they had)
Nintendo doesn't have to push the same line as its competitors, but it's got to watch it doesn't reinforce negative perceptions!
weaszel @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Forget alleged renders or mockup videos... He're undeniable proof as to what the Revolution controller will really look like.

I know a guy who works for Nintendo and he told me so.

I didn't look at any of them too closely, but the "Ayamon" screen is from the first German CG movie "Back to Gaya" and can be seen here at a German film website:

they're high quality renders from 3dsmax using the brazil R/S plugin

I don't doubt that the Revolution will be able to put out visuals as snazzy as those on the other systems. It just won't be doing it in high-definition. I love Nintendo and will buy one, but it won't be a technological showcase, just something that does its job, with the magic coming from Nintendo's first-party programmers.

#5, Still bitter that French-wannabe John Kerry didn't win the election? Get over it already. If Kerry would've won, Gitmo would be shut down, Iraq would be a bloodbath, and Hollywood would be running the country. Scary stuff. Thank god most of the people that went to the polls had enough sense to vote for the stronger candidate.
As for the Revolution, I'm excited to see what Nintendo will come up with. I like getting hardware for cheap and quality games for a steal. If the Revolution is anything like the GCN then we're in for a real treat.
BP @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
#12, right on. I'm with you 100% on that.
On the posting though, I really hope it is true, because "unreal world" and the one before it really intrigued me and made me want to play them.

I'm looking forward to the download service...
it's a very good competitor for the AOLTimeWarner games download service thats coming out..
also it solves the backwards compatibility issue that sony and ms have against nintendo.
most of us grew up with nintendos games and hold them in nostalgia....I think this was a wise move.

I am a New Yorker, and was a few blocks away from the WTC on 9/11.
At least Bush had the balls to go after these Islamic terrorists, unlike Clinton and even Reagan.
Oh, and you must've missed the AP article that reported that W actually had a better GPA in college than Kerry, AND he scored much higher in his officer entrance exam.
Looks like you bought the whole "Kerry is smarter than W" lie hook, line, and sinker.
And you were talking about the masses being stupid. You don't even realize that you're the one who's ignorant.
justice @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Kerry was quite stupid in college. Far more of a slacker than Bush.
I can't for the life of me understand why so many people would have been willing to have our nation ruled by a man who wanted to consult the rest of the world before doing anything. We're talking about the sovereignty of the United States here. Even European countries are starting to wake up to the fact that this world gov't thing is a bad f***ing idea.
Ginnal @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
Funkonaut,
Iraq is a bloodbath, 40,000 killed, wounded or in psychiatric care at least 100,000 iraqis dead and for what?
The Iraq survey group used teams of 1200 men and found nothing.
The mobile launchers we were told about? - False
Uavs? - False
Ballistic Missiles - False
and a new pentagon report shows that Iraq has becoming a training ground for new terrorists.
Great Job Dubya.

So what you're saying is that you're happy for the U.S to spend 300 Billion and counting and to waste the lives of 140,000 people for a situation that's rapidly devolving?
funkonaut @ Dec 18th 2005 10:08PM
You'll figure it out one day, Ginnal. Hopefully.

Wha? No link to a Weblogs, Inc. political site? :-P
