Soul Calibur DS screenshot surfaces
Can it be? While the image may look convincing, there's really no valid source to back it up. It was originally tagged
with Portables-Power.com, a French gaming site,
which is difficult for us to navigate. Anyone else manage to dig up some dirt on a possible DS port of Soul
Calibur?

It's not for DS. You can clearly see the "Press 2P Start" in the top roight corner. Why would they need that on the DS version... espeiclaly since each player has their own DS...
I think it'sd a shot from the original arcade version, showing what it COULD look like if it were on the DS graphics wise.
joystickz @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
are we sure this isnt just Soul Blade for the PSOne? or even an arcade shot of Soul Edge?
It's fishy that it says PRESS 2P START on the top left....
quite certain the DS version sould have to have some other feature....
why would it command player 2 to do something on player 1's screen if player 2 can't see it OR press player 1's start button....
in fact... it doesnt even say PRESS START it says PRESS 2P
2P is a button on the arcade board....
totally bogus.
Christopher7xii @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Dunno, I'm not really skeptical about the 2p thing. I just think it looks too good to be on the DS. All their games thus far look pretty damn boxy.
Nick @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
and uhh the credits counter in the bottom right.. bogus
Dom @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Kilik didn't show up until Soul Caliber for the Arcade/DC, and this definately doesn't look as good as either version.
It's quite common for home versions of the arcade to say "Press 2P start", and the credits display doesn't necessarily discount at all.
Not necessarily bogus.
WizarDru @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Why would it even say 2P Start at all? If this is being played over the wireless, that doesn't make any kind of sense. "CPU", yes. "here comes a new challenger", sure. But "Press 2P start"? why?
Not necessarily bogus, but most likely.
CapAmerica @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
There was talk about Soul Calibur coming to the DS.
But if this pic is real or not is the question.
It could easily be a early version of the game and instead of creating the game from scratch they could be porting an older version over and adding new characters. That could explain the Player 2 and credit display.
iStephen @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Doesn't seem likely.
Peter @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
I'm not even a big fighting game player, and even I know the match statistics (health bars, time remaining, etc) would never be drawn behind the character.
MUhockey @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Why would this come to the DS anyway, Soul Calibur 3 is suppose to be "exclusive" to the PS2, why not put a soul calibur port on the PSP then? I haven't heard anything about Namco dealing with Nintendo anymore anyway when it comes to Soul Calibur, although i did hear something about the Xbox...anyway...i doubt its coming to DS and if they are thinking about a portable SC...psp would be a better choice.
Mike @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Idk That looks like soul caliber 1 for the arcade version, and the fact that it says Credits, and Player 2 press start means absolutely nothing, Since it's a port it will have the same interface early on in it's process, and will most likely be a port of the arcade version since that version was far insuperior to the Dreamcast version. and as someone said above, kilik wasn't around until the soul caliber days, So it is definately not soul blade or soul edge.
Maybe Bogus/ but I really hope it Isn't :)
Jason Zeidan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
You know, I would think of the PSP as the better choice of a fighter, but I think the talents at Namco should make a port over for DS, and find an innovative use for dual screens. Actually, that screenshot seems valid. About that 2P Start thing, that's how the Arcade mode is in SC an SC2. It means, that if there is a player 2 around, they can press Start, and play in Arcade mode against P1. And I think the graphics especially seem very DS rendered. Looks nothing like PS or Arcade Soul Edge graphics at all. Interesting... A fighter on DS? Bring it on!! An eighty-seventh reason to buy a DS, I believe..
Christopher7xii @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Just as a heads up for everyone, Soul Calibur had been confirmed for the DS a long time back. So yes it is coming for the DS, but I agree the PSP would have been a better chance. I'm just waiting for Bleach: Heat the Soul 2. Just wish it'd get domesticated, or they'd add english support for it over there(like Coded Arms did).
Not Impressed (Dmitri) @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Chris you only say that because the PSP has better graphics. Games are more then just graphics, scrub.
Christopher7xii @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
LOL, why am I a scrub? You've never met me, seen me, or know anything about me.
Anyways, yes, mostly due to graphics. I'm not a graphics whore, but honestly, I don't see why the DS would be better for a 3D fighter other than non-existant load times. You can fit more characters/moves/backgrounds/music on the PSP than the DS. Also it supports updates, say they wanted to add a character or something(look how much Wipeout has benefited from it). I just don't see the touch screen as doing anything practical, and just the viewing space alone on the PSP is much more ideal. Think about it, Soul Calibur has a LOT of wide shots compared to say, DoA3. The DoA series always has the camera right up on the character. SC has much more of an arena view, and less of a "tethered together" feel. The aspect ratio on the PSP seems more suited IMO.
Regardless, back to the graphics line. Yes, I like my 3D graphics to either be really sharp, or stylized. SC doesn't do style, they go for the high poly count. If say, MvC2, or SvC Chaos or Guilty Gear XX were to be released, they could pass on the DS no problem since it doesn't appear like the hardware is hampering the graphics. Honestly, I prefer the 2D games on the GBA to the DS's attempts at 3D. I really wish they'd release a 2D Strat RPG on the DS. I'd buy one then. Or any RPG for that matter.
Let me put it from my perspective. The PSP is ideal for platform, sports, 3D fighting, and action games IMO. The DS is more for RPGs, Strats, party games, and FPS's. So while you think I loathe the DS(currently I hate their game line up), I don't really. I plan on buying one once some games come out that're fun.
pspimp @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
"you only say that because the PSP has better graphics."
Boy, isn't that the truth.
"Games are more then just graphics"
I love this line, this is what people always say when trying to defend the inferior system. With that kind of logic we would all still be playing pong.
Not Impressed (Dmitri) @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Chris. That has got to be the 3rd most stupidest comment I have seen on Joystiq yet. You just said that the PSP and DS are both good for certain types of games, which makes no sense at all. And how do you know which DS games are fun and which arn't? Have you played every single game to date? If I am not mistaken, pretty much all the reviews for DS games beat the reviews for PSP games when it comes to ratings. Only 1 game is worthy, and that is lumines. O WAIT! The creators of lumines made Meteos for the DS. Hmm. I guess your one of the few who actually thinks the PSP has something "new" to offer. Yet, if that were true, it wouldnt be getting its ass kicked in sales.
Stewart Bananas @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
not impressed... I think you just shot yourself down when you said "Most stupidest".
Eskimo Bob @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Umm...the third stupidest comment you've ever seen? I really doubt that. I've seen many much stupider comments in the few days I've been here. He said he doesn't like the DS's current game line-up. I can confidently say, without playing either of the two, that the PSP would be better for more traditional games that do not make effective use of the dual screens or the touch screen, unless you prefer N64 graphics to PS2 graphics and you hate analog sticks (though I do prefer the d-pad for fighting games). Before anyone calls me a Sony fanboy, I really don't like Sony. I had a PSX which broke from use after a few years (which pisses me off, because my N64 and NES still work without any problems). The PSP's line-up is probably my least favorite line-up of anything (I hate racing sims), and the only reasons I would buy a PS2 that I can think of are Katamari Damacy, its platformers, and Okami (assuming it turns out to have good gameplay with its pretty graphics), and I can't think of anything else right now, but there might be a few others. Either way, the DS, a handheld system, has a longer list of games I want (though some are not out yet).

Getting back to the topic, Soul Calibur 1 for arcade was on System 12, which is based on playstation.

Here's a screen capture of it running on MAME.

Christopher7xii @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
First off, thanks, Yellow Texan. I don't really follow reviews or scores, wouldn't of bothered digging that up. I just play the games and know what I like.
"You just said that the PSP and DS are both good for certain types of games, which makes no sense at all. And how do you know which DS games are fun and which arn't? Have you played every single game to date?"
Actually I have played about 90% of the PSP/DS games that have come out. I'm big on the portable market and my roommate is a manager at GameStop. She has no problem letting me stroll up there and test run PSP/DS games that were either turned in used or they've already cracked open themselves. So no, I haven't played EVERY single game to date. I have played a lot though. My thoughts of "this game works best on this system" is common sense. A fighting game has no benefits of being on the DS. There's no reason for a second screen, and touching will really hamper your reflex speed in a fighting game. Maybe a ghetto analog stick like Mario64 DS, but nothing that's really useful.
I am mostly going off of theory. The DS would out perform games that are FPS's, since controls on the PSP are limited(try Coded Arms). DS's FPS's are more like a computer w/mouse. The DS is also very much built in support of menu based games, hence RPG/Strat. Puzzle could go either way, the DS or the PSP. Other games that are more traditional (action, platform, fighting, sports), have little to no need for two screens or the touch screen, the DS's high point. I'm sure they could implement something, but it really doesn't add anything. Oh yay, a map. How... Cheatful? I generally like exploring in platform/adventure games and rather not have a map.
It seems simple to me. PSP for anything that's taxing hardware wise(more polys), the DS for anything that works well with a mouse cuz of the touch(RTS, FPS), or menu based cuz the second screen(RPG, Strat). Of course there are new odd games like the surgeon game or Nintendogs that are made FOR the DS that will play better on it, but I'm not sure what to consider those games genre wise. I guess they'd fall under "gimmick" in my book.(like Wario Ware Touched!).
Ah well, off to work. Sorry you refuse to see the world beyond your own eyes, Dmitri.
Stephen @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
I'm thinking this is real. Many of you have said that the 'Waiting for P2' is valid with nearly every Soul Calibur game under the 'Arcade Version.' Also, Kilik wasn't introduced until Soul Calibur Dreamcast, so it being Dreamcast is likely, but no so much, for its graphics aren't as great.
Jacob4000 @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
First of all Chris..I actually agree with you for once Chris. Some games will work better for each system...to me that is very obvious. There are some games that can't be done on PSP, and some that can't be done on DS. And the PSP is definately a better system to put SC on.
However...I totaly disagree with you on your "gimick" list. Do you have any idea that Nintendogs got an EXTREMELY rare perfect score from Famitsu. And everything I'm hearing about Wario touched is that it is great! And who knows about this neat quarky surgeon game. It could be great so don't just pass it up because your looking for a way to throw a punch at the DS.
Christopher7xii @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Wasn't throwing a punch. Just mean that I don't know where they fall. I decided on gimmick because they're setup to utilize the DS's functions. Not saying that it's a bad thing, just like... The surgeon game, XX/XY, and Wario Ware, really don't fit into any other genre. They seem to be games setup with nothing else in mind other than to swish the stick around or hum on the mic.
I'm not discluding Nintendogs from my list, since I loved the Catz/Dogz series on the PC. They're fun to mess around with from time to time. It's not gonna be worth rebuying my DS yet though. Animal Crossing might tho. So yeah, I wasn't KNOCKING the games by calling them "gimmick games", it seems like an appropriate label to me.
fush @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
The comment about the life bars being rendered behind the character is false. I can tell you haven't played many fighters, as this is pretty much a standard. Take a look at the Dreamcast version of Soul Calibur if you don't believe me.
Christopher7xii @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Also one thing is for sure.
Sophitia got the own laid on her.
Neo DS @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
to Christopher7xii : Post #3 "it looks too good to be on the DS." --> have you seen METROID? It looks a lot better than this screenshot and that is one of the first games. Just imagine what kind of 3D games developers will be able to make in say 1-2 years when they figured out how to push the DS to the max.
