PSP 2.0 firmware cracked?
A new video has been posted to a popular PSP homebrew site that appears to show a homemade version of tic-tac-toe loading on a PSP that has been upgraded to version 2.0 firmware. While the game does not actually run, the video demonstrates that it's possible to load a homebrew program from a memory stick, presumably by tricking the PSP into thinking that the program is the version 2.1 upgrade. At any rate, it's a promising start for homebrew development on the latest firmware, which, besides tighter security, contains a number of new features.

yes i can finally get back to the BEST feature of the PSP, playing games that came out 10 years ago! YES!

Yeah, I couldn't ever really justify the pricetag on the PSP for what I'd really be paying for - a glorified emulation/media platform that's mobile.
WeeJames @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
I think everyones already agreed that this is BS. All the guy did was put on eboot for Tic Tac Toe in the Upgrade dir and launch it. The PSP executes it then realises its not the update and does bugger all...

As WeeJames already said, this doesn't do, say, or prove anything. It'll be long before the 2.0 firmware will be cracked, if it ever happenes. Don't hold your breath.
I really have no desire to use homebrew or roms on my PSP (I rarely use roms on my PC) anyway.

Only interest I have in homebrew is I hear a program called LuLines forces your dead pixels to unstick. Heard some really positive feedback on it doing so. I got 3 dead pixels, which generally don't bug me, I definitely wouldn't mind purging them.
Also with Sony throwing MORE security on with 2.00(it's listed places online, they just didn't announce it with the patch), I really doubt 2.00 will be cracked anytime soon. Although, there probably is a lot more interest in cracking it since you get the added features of net surf and new video codecs(Which look sweet, just a lot more mb's than it's worth for me).

I wish I had a PSP...sigh.
courtney @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Doesn't it seem that the PSp is a lost cause for Home Brew, if everytime it gets cracked a new update makes them start all over again? Doesn't seem worth it?
I shoudl look more into DS homebrew.
Dustin @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Its worth it because the device is much more powerful and capable than the DS
mike @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
this would be a good time to remind everyone that Sony doesn't know the first, second or last thing about software.
Its why they MD Walkman software blows.. their mp3 player software blows.. it's why the playstation is propped up by 3rd party developers..
It's why MS is pushing on them so hard with all the UI/Online stuff.. because Sony can never match them..
Sony makes TVs, Camcorders etc.. They do NOT win at software. Ever.
I mean.. come on... Connect anyone?

Wouldnt this mean that if he created a shell for the homebrew programs to execute from/within we would have normal homebrew again, that would be like us having replacement dashboard on xbox

"new video codecs(Which look sweet, just a lot more mb's than it's worth for me)."
Actually, AVC is designed to compress video files while retaining more quality. I just finished encoding a 110 minute movie that turned out to be ~200 MB with AVC. I only got it to 600 MB with the traditional MPEG-4 codec. Different kbps, but same overall quality.
I think Sony should continue to make the firmware harder to crack, since most don't want the PSP to go the way of the Dreamcast.

Eh, I converted a skate video that was 600mb to start(55 minutes). With MPEG4 it came out to 143mb, with AVC it came out to 320mb. Lower quality AVC too. *shrugs* Tried toggling it around, and like I said, it just looks better right now. MPEG4 with the settings I currently set are the sweet spot. Clear, viewable, enjoyable image, nice and slim on the space too. Love being able to fit 12 episodes of family guy on a gig stick, then just popping on an episode before bed or what not.
As for PSP homebrew being a losing battle, not really. Once they find a way to trick it into being able to flip back to old firmwares, they pretty much can just always revert. It'll be back and forth, but I definitely think when they start supporting the PSP less with firmware updates, hackers will end with the win.

Revelation @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
The 2.0 is infact already cracked by team X-cution and others,But they are waiting with releasing this, untill the PSP is out in europe...They want to prvent that sony createa a 2.1 to stop them as they did with america's 1.51/2...
This is inside information by the way,So a 100% legit...And some people here are total morons -_-
Revelation,Team X-cution.

WHy would you want the firmware to be harder to crack? If the firmware is cracked then people like us, (Dorks, no offense) can work to unlock all the fun little features Sony is trying to prevent. And because of us dorks , people like you, (Ignorent consumer couch potatoes whose brain cells fry every game rental and release) can enjoy those features.
Bert @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Where can I download an AVC compressor?
Max @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Hey I noticed someone saying they could fit 12 episodes of family guy on a gig stick. When i convert family guy .avi's starting at around 220mb into mp4's with psp video 9.0 they turn out to be 110mb is there any way you suggest in lowering this size? Do you have a setting you would consider a sweet spot or a program? At the moment i can only fit about 4 episodes onto a 512 stick. It would be greatly appreciated
Doyhard @ Dec 18th 2005 9:59PM
Where can I now download V2.0 (I need to upgrade before I can downgrade) Or can anyone tell me which games contain the 2.0 upgrade.
Thanks in advance

Just use PSPXplay. I got mine from http://www.downloadgamepsp.com and it works great with the latest firmware.
