In a free-market economy, the consumer almost always wins, and this is a case right here. Being a Mac gamer is
an oxymoron, more or less. Except for those made by Blizzard, any other computer game announced has about a 10%
chance of being released on a Mac (I should know; I am a Mac gamer). Unreal Tournament 2004 was a very welcome
surprise. So when it came to MMORPG's, there were only two options for a Mac user: EverQuest or World of
Warcraft. The problem with EverQuest was, however, that Mac users and PC users could not play on the same
server. Since World of Warcraft has a larger community anyways, what reason would there be for someone to opt for
Sony's MMORPG? That left Sony with two options: they could either let Mac users play alongside their PC
counterparts, or they could let you download the software for free. Sony chose the latter, for reasons
unbeknownst to me.
You have to sign up to play the game, which requires monthly billing, but otherwise there's no up front costs. I
find World of Warcraft better on all counts, but this does make me think twice about it for a second. I think at
this point in EverQuest's life, though, it's too late.
