Joystiq's next-generation console purchase intent poll
Everybody else is doing it so why can't we? This wholly unscientific poll
attempts to get a sense of which next-generation console Joystiq readers intend to buy, if any.
We've set up the poll so that you can select more than one console if you intend to buy more than one, but please vote only once. After voting, let us know why you chose what you chose by dropping a comment.

What about the Phantom?
Vagabond Artist @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I chose all three, because that's probably what I'll end up doing...
Xbox360 comes with so much out of the box, and promises a moderate next gen experience this year, PS3 for their first party games and obscure japanese rpg's,(and backwards compatibility) and Revolution for the entire Nintendo game library, and the promise of a new way to play.
I will probably not get all of them right when they launch, however... but definitely xbox360 at launch, and ps3 if it's not outrageously expensive... and theres too little info on revolution to know if it would be bought at launch.... a new mario game would help.
Xbox360-forums.com @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I voted the revolution. Voted for it because I know it is the only console I'll almost definatly buy. It's been said so many times now on Joystiq, but the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be quite similar, so those who do buy two consoles will be more likely to buy the Revolution.
Of course it hasn't been revealed fully yet the revolution, but it is more likely to offer me something that PC gaming doesn't already.
Brendan Shaklovitz @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
PS3 for backwards compatibility, good graphics, good game, ,support for the PSP, and the ability to use Memory Stick Pro Duo cards(I already have a 512 MB), good everything. Nintendo Revolution because of downloadable games, the infamous "revolutionary" controller, more online support, and many other things.
Matthew @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
At the moment, I've got PS2 and GC, but I've no specific allegiance to any console - it just depends on what games there are. I'm not a big MS fan but I'd quite happily (well, begrudgingly maybe) get an XBox if it had the kind of games I like - but given that I like Japanese RPGs and Survival Horror (eg I bought GC mainly for RE 0/1/4), XBox just isn't for me - I don't like FPS, sports and racing games.
I'm not particularly enthusiastic about any of the next-gen consoles. It will cost so much money to make games for them, nobody will take risks on unusual games, and I'm afraid we'll just get the usual run of EA nonsense and sequels. I guess if anyone is going to have a go and innovating, it's going to be Nintendo, but we'll just have to see what they've got to offer when the time comes.
Having said that, I'll probably be a hypocrite and get a PS3 when FFIII or whatever comes out. And if Shenmue 3 ever happens, I'll get whatever console it requires...
boneyard @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
none, not a console gamer
toma.zed @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I choose both PS3 and Revolution because
1) I own a PS2 and a PS1 and I think sony will still bring great game on its next-gen console, despite the high price
2) I luv nintendo and retro games, I had lot of big N console in the past, and I think revolution will rock the market with its low price and fun games.
3)I think microsoft is not into gaming industry but in get as most as we can people addicted to our products. I can't approve that
Rebort @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I agree with Matthew; it's not so much the console as the games.
That said, it looks like there's great things coming out for the 360.
I've never been a Nintendo gamer, but this talk about having access to their entire catalogue has piqued my interest in Revolution.
Cpt Spaulding @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I choose another round of upgrading for my PC, I work for a living which leaves only so much time for games and theres never been a point where I havent got a PC game to take up that time. The only thing I will be purchasing thats so called next gen is a PSP as its a viable portable gaming/movie system.
Dom (evilmax17) @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I voted for all 3, because eventually I plan to own them all (after price drops and what not). If your question was "which console are you buying within the launch window", my answer would've been Revolution.
I don't know if you want to specify or not.
zombieflanders @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
PS3 and XB360, because I'm pretty sure I'll be getting both barring some sort of revelation that either (or both!) systems will steal my hypothetical children from the future and eat them alive. That or lack of funds. PS3 for both the stated functions and especially for Blu-Ray and SACD, XB360 for online play and integration with Windows MCE, and both for games.
Timmay! @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I'm not really interested in the "extra functionality" the xbox 360 and ps3 are touting. Don't need any half pc, I've got a fully functioning one allready. That said, the only one that interests me is the Revolution.
birdchili @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I did ps1->ps2 last generation and don't have any other consoles. Mostly this was for the rpgs, and some of the odd stuff (Ico, Rez, Katamari...)
The only xbox games that tempted this gen were the pc-style rpgs, which I can already play on my pc.
The Gamecube looked good for a handful of games, but never enough that I would spring for the second console and all the wiring to set it up properly in the living room.
The xbox 360 doesn't look so hot yet, but some visionary rpgs there could swing me over (particularly given I don't plan on upgrading the pc anytime soon)
The revolution tempts (so far) mainly for the ability to play those Gamecube titles I missed (Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Zelda...) I also find myself in much agreement with their gaming/platform philosophy in general (focus on interfaces, simplicity, and less on tech)
The ps3 would be my most logical upgrade, but I don't know a single game yet that is even making me curious.
I also don't plan on having a hdtv in the next 10 years (not before my current tv explodes, anyway) so if games are truly made for the hd sets (and play more poorly on the old-school tvs) you can count me out of the high-tech camp this time.
I find I'm most looking forward to: Chulip, Okami, Dragon Quest VIII, Final Fantasy XII, Everyone Loves Katamari, Shadow of the Colossus, etc... There isn't a single next-gen game that tempts me as much as these ones.
aXiS @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
to #7 your comment contradicts it self between 1 and 3...u just said u were addicted to ps1 ps2 and going along the addiction line u gonna get ps3...yet thats the excuse u use not to get an xbox....
Gimbal @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I'm buying all three. Because none of them are realy going to suck, and there is nothing worse in the realm of video games than the fallible logic of a fanboy. Plus, if I couldn't have all three I'd probably go mad. Damn you, expensive hobby!!!
I'm getting the 360 at launch if I can (since it is coming out first). That will pacify me enough that I probably won't be compelled to get the PS3 right at launch, but I certainly will be getting it. The Revolution I will get as soon as a game comes out for it that my wife or I "need" (such as Zelda).
Keith @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I will by the Microsoft XBox 360 and the Nintendo Revolution.
The 360 looks to be perfect for my main console. I have no interest in "working more hours" for a PS3, Kutraragi can take that and stick it where the sun don't shine.
Kamalot @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
#3) "the ability to use Memory Stick Pro Duo cards(I already have a 512 MB)"
Tis is possibly the WORST excuse I have heard for supporting a console.
Did you realize with the Xbox or Revolution, you won't NEED memory cards?
Kamalot @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
AND...
It is WAY too early to pick a console. Your decision should be based on the games available. What games have you had the opportunity to try for the next gen devices? NONE? Well, there's how many consoles you should pledge to support.
MattG @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
My vote is for the Nintendo Revolution. I grew up with Nintendo products and they still appeal to me. I like the fun factor of their games. I'm not so much of a fan of bloody violent games that are bloody just to be bloody. Give me gameplay over everything else.
I ran this same poll on my website last week and the Revolution won by a large margin. I was surprised. In this day of PS/Xbox wars, it seems like Nintendo is destined to become eternal underdog among the masses.

Dralt @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Until Nintendo releases their (lame?) specifications, Revolution will remain an option in everybody's mind.
After they release their specifications, well, that will be a different story.
It's amazing how many people "plan" to buy the Revolution without knowing *anything* about it!
That's the true power of brand recognition and marketing.
SheriffDane @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
#19--thats the power of nintendo being flatout the best software company in the industry. Until they stop manufacturing consoles and just stick to portables and make their games for other consoles *think sega* ... well, we'll all continue supporting nintendo. When it comes down to it, its really about the games, right?
On another note, the focus of the revolution on innovation as opposed to sheer power is very promising, true evolution it the evolution of, well, progression. The other companies focus on progression along the same linear path, but nintendo is trying to make a whole new trail. Lets just see if they can do it. I think its a brilliant move to position themself so well as everyone's second console, its not like they could honestly expect to compete well with sony & microsoft at their own game. So they had to change the game.
The real question is, what will our first console be? With pricing and release date, microsoft is putting themself in the best possible position to take a big cut of sony's market share. Playstation 3 is looking more and more like the Nintendo64 every day. But a lot of us who are more than just "casual" console gamers will end up with all 3, but the order we purchase and at what price point is still up in the air.
Threnody @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
"It's amazing how many people "plan" to buy the Revolution without knowing *anything* about it!
That's the true power of brand recognition and marketing."
Perhaps partially..Although Nintendo hasn't gone into the specs of the Revolution, they've been very vocal about the philosophy behind it. So we may not know that it runs on a single-core PPC at such-and-such mHz but we do know that it'll be cheaper than Xbox 360 or PS3, that they favour gaming features but aren't media-centric, that there will be a classic Nintendo download service, and that they're working on something different (perhaps not revolutionary) with their controller.
I would say that's far from not knowing anything about it.
Lansing @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Dralt does bring up an interesting point, but i think it pertains to the PS3 as well. We really don't know the final specs of the ps3 for sure and what its UI, online, and games will be like. Same with the revolution which we don't even know yet whats revolutionary about it.
I picked Xbox360 and Revolution because unless something big is announced for ps3 like "hey its not 5 billion dollars or MGS4 is a launch title" then i'm going to get an xbox360.
homer @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I chose "Other" meaning "i don't know yet." Until prices, specs and game reviews are released i think it's foolish to speculate on which system to buy. i'd rather focus on actual games coming out for actual systems. that being said, i'm very interested in the revolution, b/c of the focus nintendo is putting on gaming...i don't need a "media center" and if i did it wouldn't be a half-assed console version of the real thing.
Daydalaus @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Revolution, i have been playing videogames for many many years and i am bored to the bone, i'm expecting something funny and pleasant to play with not a blackbuster hit or a best selling game if it's boring.
Sean O. @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I put Revolution and 360... as of this moment. I was going to side with the PS3 but Kuturagi has been intent on having me buy another system by saying crazy things. So far the results seem promising for the Revolution... it doesn't fare too well when you ask for a favorite but allow people to choose more than one and it gets some better support.
jonathan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
#19
everyone plans to buy the revolusion because
A) backwards compatability to ALL of the past nintendo systems (-all of the portable series)
B) the price is going to be much lower than the other cansoles
C) nintindo makes fantastic games
D) (to some?) the revolutionary aspect of the controller
Alakath @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Revolution and other for me.
The other would be the GPx2, which, while it isn't exactly a console, I figure is a system which has yet to be released and should be mentioned.
I have a PS2, I have a XBox, and I have a cube. I just don't have as much time for games as I used to, and so the cube is all I really play. It has tons of great games that you can pick up and play for a little while and have fun playing. Things don't seem like work.
Admittedly, I loves me some Nippon Ichi games, and I love the quirky games like Ico and Katamari Damashi, so I'll probably eventually pick up whatever console seems to be getting those, but I'm not planning on getting that until late in the console's lifecycle. I have no problem waiting anymore.
Charlie Army @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I chose Definately 360. I also chose other simply because I just dont know about the other.
1. Because funds have to be in the right place.
2. I've ALWAYS been a one console type of guy (out with the old, in with the new). But this generaration may change that. With that said...
3. Revolution would be my 2nd console.
Rather than tell why I chose those sysytems I will state why not Sony. To put it short, I have a bad feeling about them this time around.
Mark @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Well originally I was going to get the PS3, but they haven't revealed anything breathtaking about it other than the fact that I simply can't afford it. Well then. Guess I'm not going to set my eyes on that puppy eh? 360 and its Live features look great and considering most of the games will support it, I'll be buying that.
Jason Zeidan @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Yay, PS3's last. I can see that, considering most people want a 360 and a Revolution, and the PS3 is basically a 360 clone. I'm getting a Revolution first, and if I have the money, I may buy a 360. I'll never buy Sony's mess ever in my life..
Pretty Obvious @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Im def sticking with Microsoft, as far as innovation is concerned theyve done more to change console gaming in the last 4 years then Nintendo or Sony (Live & harddrive).
Ill have to wait and see when it comes to Sony, when the PS2 launched its lineup was crappy as all hell, and Sony has a record of hyping and underdelivering. If any of the PS3's launch titles look as good as Killzone (which I seriously doubt) then im picking one up at launch.
Nintendo, I dont trust them anymore. They release maybe 3 good titles a year and they are all repetitive. If it wasnt for Metriod Prime, Eternal Darkness and Res Evil 4. I would be really pissed about buying a cube. Third party support looks minimal for the Revolution and the only thing that could make me get one at this point would be some 3d or holographic controlled interface. Anything else doesnt deserve the name Revolution.
Ryan Croson @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I'm planning on buying all three eventually. Right now I'm most excited about the 360, because it's more of a known quanitity at this point. It looks like the have some sweet new franchises in development for it, and I think that's really exciting.
I'll buy a PS3 eventually as well, but if it's really expensive I'll wait until a price drop. I'm not too keen on most of Sony's first-party stuff, but I'm sure they'll have some great exclusives.
I like Nintendo's focus on games over technology, but to tell the truth, I'm not particularly looking for a "brand new" console experience, so that's not so much a selling point for me. I'm satisfied with the current controllers right now. I may catch flak for saying this, but I think that Nintendo coasts by way too much on reputation and nostalgia. While I'm not sure who I would say is the top software house right now, I know that for me, it wouldn't be Nintendo. I'm personally more impressed by Viewtiful Joe and Resident Evil 4 than I am with any of Nintendo's offerings on the GC. Don't get me wrong, I love Nintendo, I'm just hoping that whatever new interface they're cooking up will shake some of the cobwebs out. And hopefully they won't prematurely choke their system to death for the third time in a row.
So yeah, I'm one of those people who just likes games, regardless of platform. I'm excited to see more stuff from Sony and Nintendo on their next systems.
chill @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
"It's amazing how many people "plan" to buy the Revolution without knowing *anything* about it!

Too bad it wasnt enough to help the gamecube...Doubt it will be enough to help the rev.
I'll get a PS3 and 360...Never liked any first party N titles except SNES metroid and star fox. So unless they get serious third party exclusives the other systems wont get, I have no interest.
Ben @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
*cough*MYIDEA*cough*
well i voted for the REV, but there's really only a 50/50 chance I'll get one. Xbox and PS3, ick.
I'm more of a handheld guy, I just <3 my DS, and I wouldn't mind a PSP for the browser, etc. not really for the games :P but its way too expensive for me to buy myself.
Plus, with Nintendogs coming out soon, I need to feed and water my dog, or it'll run away on me! ^_^
Matters @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Dralt never in the history of consoles has specifications ever mattered a single bit. Right now the #1 console of all time is the Playstation 2. It's also the LEAST powerful console out right now.
How does not knowing the specs for the Revolution matter at all to Nintendo fans? It's Nintendo, we already know what to expect.
All of the next gen consoles will be as fast or faster than my current PC which is capable of playing beautiful games like battlefield 2 in extreamly high res.
That's more than good enough specs for me and probably most everybody else here too.
Some of you guys are putting too much money on specs alone and it's really sad.
This new found sony fanyboy logic is really funny. It completely contradicts the success of the Playstation 2 (which if we use the new fanboy logic would conclude that the Playstation 2 is a heaping pile of crap, half the speed of the much more powerfull and cooler gamecube and 1/3rd the power of the god-like XBox)
Seriously people lets use our brains a little ok?
Matters @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
And when I say specs don't matter I mean it has never mattered as far as the success of the console goes. Sure, companies have always bragged about what their new consoles can do, but that alone has never put a console in the #1 spot. 3D0, Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, XBox etc etc.. The list goes on.
In fact if I had to base my predictions on history I'd have to say that having the fastest system is nearly a losing strategy.
I'm sure we can all point out the 1 or 2 times what I'm saying might be wrong, but for the most part.. I'm right.
Tim @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Revolution because it will (probably) be inexpensive and because I'll need one to get Nintendo's first-party software. (I want my Mario and Zelda goodness!) Backwards compatibility is a good thing (I like my GameCube games) and an online library of Nintendo classics to buy and download? Sign me up! I'm waiting for the SNES Mario All-Stars!
PS3 for Japanese RPGs and occasional other game. I expect that the PS3 will get most games, just as the PS2 does. Plus, my PS2 is starting to break down (given Sony, I'm amazed it's lasted this long!) and I'll need something to play my old PS2 and PS1 games once the PS2 dies. (Although I sure hope I can use my PS1/2 memory cards and my PS2 controllers with the thing. Maybe a USB controller adaptor and a USB card reader or something.)
The Xbox never had any games that interested me. (I don't play FPS games, for one thing.) So far I haven't seen anything too exciting for the Xbox 360 either, even if the hardware kicks ass.
BoB @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Ill be getting all three. Xbox 360 because of franchises I love and Xbox Live. PS3 because of all the neat looking titles coming out for it (I-8, Killzone 2, WarHawk, Eyedentify, etc.). And of course the Revolution, for its awesome Nintendo franchises, online ability, and a mysterious and hopefully cool controller.
I will be buying my 360 at launch, I already have it paid off. I will buy a Revolution at launch, because it will be cheap and reliable. I will wait a while to decide on the PS3. I may get it at launch, depending on games available, price, reliability issues, etc.
Todd @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Nintendo Revolution for sure...maybe a 360 once the price drops some.
Never, NEVER EVER Sony anything. They make great products, but they use crappy parts (everything Sony I've ever owned died within a year - a total of 5 expensive products)...plus you can't believe a word they say. So sorry Sony, I loved your products while they lasted, but that's the point; they never lasted. Well, 4 lasted long enough to be out of warrantee, but not much more than that. The last one was under warrantee and when I sent it back to Sony I was told that it was my fault. Aparently "user abuse" translates in Sonyese to "your product has a scuff on it".
Stephen @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Definitely the Revolution for its infamous 'revolutionary' controller and its virtual emulation. But I've been with Nintendo and their games are always great, though they lack online play.
With Microsoft and Sony around, prices for developing games and the system itself are rising and Nintendo needs to fix this. They need to fix the gaming company -- again.
SatanicMouse @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I voted for the Xbox 360 and Ps3, I will probably buy them both. I know for a fact I will not buy a Revolution, Nintendo has betrayed me by making their console a little kid console with a 1 game worth getting and that is resident evil. None of their games are original...Zelda, Mario, SuperSmash Bros, Donkey Kong. played them and I want something new, and what is with games like Nintendogs, and Animal Crossings? It is a 5 years old console no point in me buying unless they really surprise me which I doubt.. same dam thing as the GameCube
Andrew @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Screw the consoles...
Can somebody say: "New Graphics Card"
say it over with me... "N-E-W G-R-A-P-H-I-C-S C-A-R-D"
Cyberclaws @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Live by the sword, die by the sword. That is how I see my views on consoles. In this case, I chose Nintendo's Revolution. I consider myself loyal customer to the company and anyone else I see yappin' and hollerin' about how great the other consoles out there..well...that's their perogative. I have seen alot of people I know that were all 'amped' about the Nintendo back in the day and now their present loyalty is with other consoles. All I can say to that is the obvious, bandwagon jumpers. Most everybody loves a 'champion' for whatever reason. Like in the NFL, the Super Bowl Champions always draw a larger fanbase because of how successful they were that year, that concept also applies here. I root for one team and just hope they achieve that level of success someday. So, Nintendo Revolution gets my vote. It's like a new quarterback for my favorite team. Thanks.
Matthew @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I chose the Revolution simply because I'm looking for a fresh game experience. A lot of people say that game quality these days are declining. I don't buy that. Games are getting better, but I think some people are simply loosing interest in these games. It seems like Revolution is going to bring a freshness to it, and I think that's going to appeal to a lot of people.
Shawn Oster @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
360 for the media center extender functionality.
TJ @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Well I'm an old guy with not much time for gaming and as such Nintendo Revolution for me all the way, they make the best exclusive games on the market, full stop.
We can have haters rant all we want about "OMG NIN R TEH KIDEE" but the truth is I'm man enough to not need a blood and guts game. To be honest I think titles like Pikmin lay large one's on games like Driv3r.
I also put in for the PS3, the Sony consoles may not be perfect but some of the rare exclusives are, I couldn't live without MGS4 (well maybe I could) and others like Katamari and Okami are well worth having.
360, the XBOX was far too immature for me, as in trying to be mature (watches flaming arrows of the L!ve crew fly). But Microsoft have their chance, make it less of a watered down PC with a far better range of games and I'll buy. The ball is in their court for my hard earned cash.
delerious @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I'm choosing 360 and RevOlution, but also I'm going for the Phantom. It's underrated and I think it'll play out, lots of games on launch, and I don't care if there are PC games in there line up as well, I just care that there are more than 20 games to choose from when I get it.

The fact that Nintendo makes some of the best software in the world would by reason enough. Unlike Nintendo's software, first party, hit games on the PS2 and some on XBOX are from 3rd parties its not always guaranteed to be on that platform.
