New purchase intent study shows Xbox 360, PS3 tied; Nintendo lags
In a survey of nearly 1600 consumers, Ziff Davis Media found that approximately 37% intend to purchase a
Playstation 3, 34% an Xbox 360, and 14% a Nintendo Revolution.
Let's summarize the consumer study data to date.
-
IGN reader poll on expected "power" of next-gen consoles (says nothing about intent to purchase, published August 2, 2005): 55% PlayStation 3, 31% Xbox 360, 10% Nintendo Revolution.
-
X-bit labs reader poll on plans to buy (August 8, 2005): 23% PlayStation 3, 20% Xbox 360, 5% Nintendo Revolution.
-
Ziff Davis Media study of 1558 consumers (August 9, 2005): 37% Playstation 3, 34% Xbox 360, 14% Nintendo Revolution.
If you spot any more polls or studies of this sort, please let us know about them. We'll try to keep a running tally here.

The biggest change in these opinion polls is the Revolution, and it's interesting to note how the audience affects the impact of the Revolution. X-bit targets a specific audience of hardcore PC gamers, so the Revolution scores the lowest among them (5%); among gamers in general, a mix of hardcore and casual gamers, the Revolution scored 10%. And from Ziff-Davis, which is all electronics in general, interest in Nintendo Revolution shot up to an almost competitive 14%. It'll be interesting to see how these all change as time progresses and we learn more about these consoles.

Even baby can make a poll. These poll are useless data because every polls are different.
Ben @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
How about a Joystiq poll?
and no, that debate was NOT a poll :|
Xlash @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
They are not useless, but in context, it shows you different results than those "generalised" by most people.
A survey conduct by IGN applies to IGN readers, which I guess are Americans between 14-30 years old.
Moreover, like I was discussing on a computer security blog yesterday, next-gen war might be the one of "modding". Xboxers and mod community are waiting the opportunity to transform the X360 like they have done with the Xbox, and at the same time, Sony is even ready to throw linux right in the box. Everything to gain interest, let's see how they will sale games, which is the final threshold of success. The xbox, even if they have sold few millions of it, is still in the red.
Cheers to next-gen gaming!

That and even if all the polls came up with the same numbers at this time, it still wouldn't be useful information. It's too early to tell. Price cuts, advertising, games, reviews, etc., will all affect how the consoles do in the market. I'm tired of hearing all this useless information. I'm not saying I'm going to stop reading it, but I just wish people used their time more productively instead of creating useless polls.
And yes, I know the polls give some idea of how things will go, but it's still pretty useless to us.
Hell-Raiser @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Don't you think that part of the reason Nintendos stats are so low is because we know very little about the console. We know how the 360 is going to look like. we know how the PS3 is most likely going to look like. But we only know how the console might look like of the Rev. Big N say that the controller is what makes the console. So looking at a black box means nothing. Nintendo will come out with more info when the 360 and PS3 hype dies down. I want to see somebody run stats at that time.
TrackZero @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I find those polls worthless, as they only usually give you one choice. I know many people are planning to buy the Revolution as a second console. Props on your poll just posted that lets us pick multiple consoles, as it should be.
Alex K. @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
It's interesting to note that the Revolution gets up to 14% support when we haven't seen a single game, controller, or seen any real specs about the console, while MS and Sony are trying to blow us away with their next gen games.
This is kinda offtopic, but have you ever noticed that among the launch titles for xbox 360 and the PS3 that there aren't any first party titles coming to those systems on launch? this must be a first in console history
Brian Kirst @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
These polls look pretty accurate and show consumer interest to date somewhat accurately. Honestly, I'm suprised nintendo's numbers were so high conidering they've barely released any details and they target younger gamers who are less likely to contribute to online polls.

I have stated in another post a while ago that I think that this is a great opportunity for NIN to make up some serious ground. The mystery thing is (I think) what is driving up the interest of NIN. But we will see. The trick will be (and the best thing for them) would be if they can somehow release before the PS3. I think that would make a huge difference. I dont think they can come out the gate last.
But thats neither here nor there. I agree for the most part with the rest of the posts that has been on Joystiq. It is interesting to see what everyone plans on purchasing but I think that it really doesnt matter. It is just too early. I would like to see the whole console war be at %33.33 but that is just wishful thinking I know. Oh well!
PS3Player @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Poll this, poll that, man you know what poll my ass. It is simple, at first PS3 players were voting that is why the PS3 had 55%, they went away and Xbox 360 fans came and started voting, which obviously closed the gap. This is not election day where the politicians can lie all they want, this is game business and sooner or later we will all find out that the PS3 is way superior than both the 360 and the Revolution. The 360 is all hype, it's the same as the Xbox just a different box.
WizarDru @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Look Ma, A Troll!
never seen that act before.
Maestro @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
It appears the bogus E3 hype is starting to wear off and consumers are starting to make more educated decisions. Obiviously, soon after E3 everyone wanted a PS3. But now that many of their promises have already been dropped as well as all their "twice the power" myths have been proven wrong the PS3 seems to be losing some of its momentum.
Jed Merrill @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Polls like this can be damaging to consumers in the long run. Developers should take this with a grain of salt. I expect these results to shift widely once more is known about Revolution.
In the last two months, a poll in Japan's Famitsu showed Nintendo in first, followed closely by Sony, and MS trailing significantly behind. Show us some games, Nintendo, and you will be back up there.
b @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Hey dumbass, you forgot that in Japan, there was a poll to 1000 people, equally divided in gender and age groups (20's, 30's, 40's and 50's) more than 60% will buy PS3, 8% Revolution, and ONLY 2% will buy an Xbox 360. And most has been revealed about 360, something about play 3, and almost nothing about Revolution. Surprisingly (or not), in the 30's age group, there was the highest percentage in revolution buyers.

Article: New purchase intent study show Xbox 360 , PS3 tied, nitendo lags.
TIED? Hey joystiq, could you tell me where is the tied? PS3 in the lead, small but not tied.
And Ziff Davis poll is so stupid, Joystiq didnt post this but Ziff Davis is asking peoples intent to purchase over the "next 12 MONTHS in U.S", Is PS3 launch sometime in the next 12 months? How could people planning to purchase when it didn't even come out in the NEXT 12 MONTHS?
Remember this poll is for U.S peoples. not JP.
Matters @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
What's funny is that this sites own poll has almost 3,000 votes (nearly twice as many) and it clearly shows the Revolution being in 2nd place only little more than ~100 behind the xbox.
Blue Balloon @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
I am going to be Evil Nintendo who will heck on PS3 and XBox 360
ps3guy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:07PM
Im ps3 fanboy and I say ps3 is the best, huge power combined with great high quality games equals ps3 the winner console and xbox360 is just another way for Bill to show off and get MORE $$, revo is ok but games will probably be targeted at kids so new mario game... If your brains are ok not fryed by playing halo then you will buy ps3 and maybe revo but not xbox360...
