Gamepark is an enigma.
The hardware is so cool, the games are few, but looks so cool.
It really is a shame it never caught on.
Be really cool if somehow this could play PC games.

The whole point of the GP32 was that it could be used to play loads of emulators. In fact, the homebrew scene was the only thing it had going for it.

Kind of like the PSP. heh.

Do you know GP32 from Gamepark? The Gamepark was divided into two companies: Gamepark and Gamepark holdings. XGP from gamepark is a high-end gaming handheld with full 3d acceleration(OpenGL ES?). It will be backward compatible. The design and specifications are not fixed yet. This is scheduled in the second quater next year. GPx2 from Gamepark holdings is a media player though it supports many games by emulators. This will not be compatible with both GP32 and XGP. GPx2 supports only 2D acceleration. GPx2 will be released soon at very affordable price. I am personally very interested in GPx2.

I like the idea of a handheld created for homebrew and emulators. Great! I also like the idea of the company NOT trying to break emulators and homebrew with each firmware update.

Booo Sony!

This looks very similiar to the PSP, wonder if it will have the same capabilities.? The swivel screen is welcomed. What functions are on the keys, not very clear in the photo. Sleek design, might have to get one, just to play with it.

That big open flat space under the screen is just begging for a QWERTY keyboard.

Too bulky and button layout looks odd. With that, I'll probably still buy one.

the color and shape of the buttons (both phone and game) and the directional pad are different between the two pics... But the ability to have the screen like a psp, and be able to clamshell it away ala tablet pc is great. It was an idea I was hoping for in a handheld. Pity it wont have anything in the way of software like my DS and PSP. Its bound to go the way of the tapwave, and likely the Gizmondo and Ngage.

Whats with only a number pad... dont they think that a functional keyboard (or a querty) might be a little more usefull.

Agreed. I'd be more interested in a little kbd like a Treo or Sidekick.

If this os for the Korean market they may use the keypad for text entry. I hear many in Korea are proficient in T9.

Uh...that's not what I was expecting. Might be kinda cool though.

I too wonder about the number pad. Is there to be a phone module add on or something ?

I heard that XGP (not GPX2) will feature WiFi, DMB and TV-out. The number pad may be replaced with touch-pad (though not fixed yet.)

ps.
Many koreans actually prefer the number pad to a tiny querty keypad. I think it's just because korean input methods for numpad is cleverly designed. I'd also like qwerty to type english.

Some of you guys have no idea what you're talking about.... and this article is not exactly incorrect, but not quite right. First of all, the XGP and the GPx2 are not made by the same company. The XGP is made by GAMEPARK and the GPx2 is made by Gamepark HOLDINGS. Secondly, Gamepark HOLDINGS is changing their company name, and also that of their console, to avoid confusion GAMEPARK and their XGP. GPx2's new name will be announced on Aug. 25th. Another thing, GAMEPARK's XGP will be primarily for commercial games (they are planning to release Quake 3 on it) and the Gamepark HOLDINGS console GPx2 (or whatever they will be calling it) will be primarily a media player and largely supportive of homebrew and emulators (Gamepark HOLDINGS will even be releasing a few emulators themselves, so they say). Anyways, whichever handheld you end up getting will depend on you personal tastes.

Ummmm jmetal, by the time this thing is out Quake 3 should be nearing it's open source release which means they CAN'T sell it commercially, and even if they did make a deal with John Carmack and id Software, homebrewers could simply take the SDK for the system and port there own version. And last I checked the XGP is the trus successor to the GP32 with full backwards compatability and all that good stuff, meaning the XGP should be the more home-brew/open source freindly system. Gosh, n00bs :P
