Will El Mariachi head to the PSP?
Our cohorts at
Cinematical have alerted us to
an IGN interview with Robert Rodriguez, the
film-maker behind Sin City, the indie philm phenom El Mariachi and the follow up, starring Johnny
Depp, Once Upon a Time in Mexico. His latest interest is taking the unexpected dark hero of the
blind-gunfighter to a video game designed for the PSP. The question is, within the growing world of film
franchise games, has there been a game inspired by a small-budget indie? And… if the gunfighter in the game is
blind, can we somehow play the game blind as well? My thoughts turn to 5-1 sound and other cues directing our
attention and our fire power, while those connected to the game, via WiFi, could witness our rampage. Think
Different.

By the follow-up to El Mariachi you mean Desperado, not Once Upon a Time in Mexico, since that's the third movie in the series...

Don't forget, he also excreted:
- The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D
- Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over
- Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams
- Spy Kids

although the blind gunfighter (aka. CIA Agent Sands) was in Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

Umm, wasn't it Antonio Banderas not Johnny Depp? Freudian slip? Secretly in love with the Depmeister?
wildcardd @ Dec 18th 2005 10:10PM
garr...he was in that one. Never mind my smart a$$ post

Yes, the lead character was Antonio's, put Depp did appear in the film and plays the character that the game would be based on:
"IGN FILMFORCE: What about the El Mariachi franchise - do you have any future plans for that?
RODRIGUEZ: I thought about doing a PSP game that would follow [Johnny Depp's character]. That would be cool, a Once Upon a Time in Mexico video game for the PSP - The Man With No Eyes. He would be a blind gunfighter."

No worries, wildcardd. If anything, the comments are making it clear that gamers know about a heck of a lot more than just games. Something we have always known, but runs counter to the stereotypes spelled out in the usual press.

Um hey R.R., what about a game with El Mariachi? You know....that guy you forgot about in Once About A Time...the guy everyone loved in the other films??
Goob @ Dec 18th 2005 10:10PM
Right on shogun.
El made the series, too bad he faded into old man obscurity in film 3 (which I still liked enough anyways thought). It'd be cool to see more movies made with the character of the Mariachi, different actors, different time periods, whatever, like James Bond only a mariachi gunfighter. You could do interesting things with the character, I'm sure, if you treat it more open ended like.
