What? All the sudden Donkey Kong doesn't count? Super Mario Bros may be 20 years old, but Mario ain't.

This one is easy, Super Mario Brothers 3. My best-friend, my little brother, and I all went to see The Wizard on opening day because we heard that they showed part of this game in it. Then finally when my best-friend got it (I would have to wait until Christmas) we both talked our parents into letting us skip school the next day so we could play it. We played through all the various worlds and finally beat Bowsers sometime in the late evening. We actually continued to play it on a regular basis for months to come eventually competing in speed trials to see who could finish it the fastest. To this day this is still my favorite Mario game (though I prefer the Super Mario All-Stars version to the original NES version).

When I was around 8 years old I played Super Mario land on the Gameboy for ages, I love that game. I love ALL the mario games but Super Mario land is my favorite.

I have never played the Mario RPG but I hear it's good.

Mario in Donkey Kong was a different Mario. Kind of how Link is always a different Link. Mario in Donkey Kong had a pet gorilla and a girlfriend, and he was a construction worker.

Mario in SMB is a plumber in the MUSHROOM KINGDOM trying to save the princess while throwing fireballs. Notice no pet monkey. He also packed on a few pounds.

Of course he *MAY* have had DK put to sleep for endangering human lives, then lost his job due to the fact that his pet ruined buildings... Sending him into debt/lawsuits, which made his girl take off(getting attacked by his animal is one thing, but women won't stick around a man that's worth negative money). All that combined sends him into a deep depression where he gains some nice weight, then attempts suicide which puts him into a comatose state... In which he dreams of a fantasy land called "Mushroom Kingdom", the world we all know and love today. So maybe we're celebrating the birth of Mario in his own mentally created world.
---

Then again, none of this means shit because FF7: Advent Children is released on the thirteenth of September, which will forever be remembered as the greatest day in game => film cinema in the history of mankind. Not much of a feat, I'll admit, but this movie will be damn impressive and much loved.

the article says there's a video clip of the first mario and more "coming soon" ones entitled "???" maybe they'll possibly ramp up through the mario games showing clips of them, leading up to a new mario on the revolution maybe?

I suppose Mario we know on from the NES days could be in fact the son of the original Mario as Donkey Kong from DKcountry and DK64 is actually the son of Donkey Kong from the original arcade game (so the DK now is really DK jr).

"maybe they'll possibly ramp up through the mario games showing clips of them, leading up to a new mario on the revolution maybe?"

This would make perfect sense, given that they're only showing the controller in these videos so far. A ramp up to a revolution Mario presentation would thus spotlight the revolutionary controller.

Oddly enough, the 20th anniversary date coincides with the launch date of the Gameboy Micro... Could there be a new (unannounced) Mario outing planned for GameBoy Advance that may launch with the Micro?

Just a thought.

#7, #9: I wouldn't be surprised at all if that were the case. I would love to see a series of controllers/commercials over the next few weeks and having the Rev controller actually debut this way. That would be pretty hardcore awesome.

Yesterday I saw a "Happy! Mario 20th" TV advertisment here in Japan. I wonder what commercial gain they hope to get from it...

"Mario" in Donkey Kong is actual called Jumpman. It never been offical called Mario until the offical name Mario in "Mario Bros" where you go in pipe and fight with monster without idiot Bower. That what it should be count.

Two new commercials up, this time with the Famicom controller morphing into the GBMicro. Plus, a news page (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/mario20th/news_list/index.html) that I totally can't read.

Mario didn't get his name in donkey Kong he was only "Jumpman" then so he is in fact 20 years old.

My favorite Mario game is easily SMB3. I know SMworld for SNES is easily a more suprior game but in my opinion it got too complex too quickly. SMB3 had enough secrets to keep you looking for them but not so many that it made you batty.
SM Sunshine did the complex platformer well. It was a platforers dream game. Thats why its my second favorite SM game.
