Unity game engine adds Windows support
Copenhagen, Denmark-based Over the Edge I/S has released a new
version of their Unity Game Engine that claims to offer one-click publishing to Windows and Mac OS X.
"So what?" you say. "What's this have to do with Madden '06?" you ask.
Well, we support anything that makes developing games easier, because that's going to ultimately mean more diverse games that break the stultifying parade of sequels that plague the industry. There are thousands of guys (and maybe dozens of girls) out there right now that have always dreamed of making a game but have been put off by the ever-escalating costs of doing so.
Middleware game engines bring indie game development back into the realm of possibility. In the words of Chairman Mao, "let a thousand flowers bloom, a hundred schools of thought contend."
So go make a game. When you do, let us know and we'll share our thoughts on it with the readers of Joystiq.

I have just had the opportunity to play with Unity for several hours. Thus far, it lives up to the claims. However, being a novice designer, I found the scripting difficult to nail down. I couldn't get basic things like character and camera movement, to work correctly. This can potentially be a great intro game design tool, however a few clear tutorials couldn't hurt to get the wheels of innovation moving.

Hi Don,
did you check out the two big tutorials? The newest one walks you through scripting a whole game.
If you have questions you should know that the Unity forum is extremely helpful (and gentle to beginners). The developers hang out there too, listening to ideas and criticisms, and helping out with features that could be a little clearer.
See you there.

PS. We just finished off a Widget-making competion, where a bunch of inexperienced (and some quite experienced) guys designed amazing Widget games. They will be available soon, and many of them are open-sourced so you will be able to go in and learn the tricks of the trade.
