DS: Strange encounters with Pictochat
Ever had a strange guest enter your Pictochat session? We dug up a DS owner's post on LiveJournal about his encounter in a movie theatre. He and a friend were picto-chatting before the movie when a stranger suddenly entered the session. The two friends turned and saw someone waving from a few rows back. They ended up doing a Super Mario 64 DS three-way, go figure. So how about it? Do you have any kinky encounters with a stranger you'd like to share?

so ecbc and I go to gamestop to get Mario 64 DS.
and i bring my DS along.
then we go to this chinese restaurant.
and as ecbc's coming back from the restroom, he's like "dude did that
kid steal your gameboy?"
there was some kid at another table fucking around with PictoChat on
his own DS
so i changed the nickname on mine, found the room he was in, and
scribbled "What you just ate wasn't chicken." and sent it
and like 10 seconds later i hear over my shoulder "EWWWW!"
apparently he showed it to his mom
i powered mine down and kept on eating.
that was the best thing EVER.

Yup, I was standing in front of the school where I had to pick up my girlfriend.
I was waiting so I took out my DS and started playing some Polarium.
Suddenly, this younger kid (around 13, I'm 20) takes out his DS and we played a little 2-player polarium together, without saying one word 'live' to eachother =D
Another story comes from my cousin, who was sitting in his room pictochatting to himself, when suddenly someone entered the chatroom. It was someone waiting in the room below his room. Because my uncle is a doctor, a lot of people have to wait and read some magazines.
They ended up playing the Hunters Demo. My cousin won easily =D

I was at EBgames getting Meteos and Feel The Magic. So I decided to try it out, but I figured I should check out pictochat since I was at EB. Anyhoo, there was a room with 2 people in it already, so I obviously jumped in. And I swear to god, you can't make this up, one of them asked if I wanted to have an orgy.

When i went to see star wars episode three on midnight opening night(morning?) i brought my ds and my metriod demo and mario64ds. We showed up like 2 hrs early because of the lines etc. so i played mario for a bit. after about half an hour sitting in the theatre i pop into pictochat. no one was there so i doodle to myself. then about 5 mins later someone enters. we chatted for a bit when 2 more ppl enter. we setup a mario 64 game. when we go back to pictochat and theres like 5 more ppl there. by the time the movie started about 30 ppl where spread across the pictochat rooms. i only ended up being able to see about 3 of the ppl with a ds in my theatre so i guess with all the overlapping signals i was talking and playing with people in the other theatre rooms. it was extremely fun. it was like playing online b/c i never talked face to face with anyone i played with. what was really fun besides setting up metriod mini tournements(frustrating to keep the wrong ppl out) was drawing little sketches during the movie. some were funny and others where just wrong but it was fun. This has happened at other movies but with fewer ppl. O and once at the park i pictochatted with and played against some random kid and his friend in mario64(i won easily).

ummm...actually that's pretty easy to make up.
D1a2r3k @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
that must have been a really big eb not to be able to see who actually said something like that to u...

Heres a true EBGames story, when I went to EB before I owned my DS, I went to look at the pictochat and written on it was this (no lie):
DS IS FOR BOY-TOUCHERS PSP IS BETTER
I shrugged it off but I thought I would tell you guys the story.
weird huh?
Smon @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
I have a PSP and DS and gotta say, please stop the hating. DS and PSP are handhelds. One's insignificant comment or opinion will just be shrugged off as people buy what they really want. This comment will be shrugged of as well as someone says something ridiculous and insulting to me.
Todd @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
#8 - It may have been from the people working at EB. I've heard them at my local EB telling people that ask about the DS that they really should consider the PSP instead. I've set them straight every time so they don't usually talk to me when I come in. Not trying to knock the PSP, but if I ask for something you stock then don't try to sell me something else just because your a Sony fanboy.
Oh, and on the topic...pictochat in church has started to catch on here. Trying to crack each other up with crazy doodles and such. Something really fun about trying to make someone laugh in a place where it's not appropriate! Always new people jumping in all the time.
Matters @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
wow really? I had the exact opp. experience when I went to buy my roommates PSP for his birthday. They tried to talk me out of buying it because of all the problems. I agreed with them, but got it anyway because that's what he wanted. Plus I wasn't the one paying for it his girlfriend was.
Legault @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Me and a friend were pictochatting at a movie theater and we were outside of the theater waiting for a movie and then some kid comes into the room adn we start talking to him and then some other guy comes in and then I said hey lets play metroid so we all start playing and my and my friend totally owned even though I owned him :). When the movie started we kept playing we play 10 games during the movie it was pretty sick
OTAM @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
I have a DS. Problem is that noone else around here does because I live in a backwater Pennsylvania town with no fire dept or police dept.
Kinda sucks for me because I really like online play. Hopefully they'll get the WiFi up soon.
JT Mill @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
I always check PictoChat's rooms when I use my DS in a highly public place (ie Mall, Airport, City Park) and I've never found any other users. I guess they're all too busy with their Nintendogs?
blinks @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
10 & 11 -
Perhaps they figure if they talk you out of what you originally came in to get, they can get you to buy both (come back and don't return the original)...?

that one is my favorite story out of all of these :) that's just really cool.
i keep wanting one of those little guys more and more.. as soon as pay the repair costs for my car maybe i'll cough up the bucks.

I was coming back on the bus back this past Sunday from Otakon (in Baltimore) when I pull out my DS. I hear from behind me, "Dude, is that Nintendogs?
The guy comes up to look, and we ended up playing Meteos (which I had never tried and thus sucked at) and then I put in Mario 64, which he also kicketh my ass at. But we just kept playing, all while the bus pulled into a rest stop, the driver declared that no one could get off, and the other passengers started to scream and yell at her...
robotplague @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
I've never had an encounter like that before (though I wish I would, that would be cool). But every single time a few of us get together and start pictochatting it quickly becomes the funniest, disgusting and most vulgar conversations ever (well, mostly pictures). I always have a GREAT time with pictochat with other people, I wish every single one of my friends had a DS.

Nintendogs is an overpriced tomagatchi. Instead of playing with a real dog you pay money for a virtual one.
Yes,this is also considered a "game".I think i'll pass. I'm saving my money for Resident Evil,Viewtiful Joe and Mario Kart on the DS.
Rhine @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
nintendogs came out this tuesday he might of got it early but i doubt it i havent seen many other ppl with ds's but i havent tried a movie theater and i dont like carrying carts around i lose stuff easy :/
juju @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Just got mine this weekend (after the price drop--w00t!). But I've never seen anybody in the past year with a DS out and about (except for a kid in a Vietnamese restaurant).
Strange since here in Seattle, you see all kinds of gadgets and laptops out. Everywhere. Also, I've only seen PSPs *once* in the wild. This I can understand more since it seems people would want to baby it (like me whenever I get one).
Maybe I just need to take it out more. Also, at one point there was a PSP meetup site--anybody know of anything similar for the DS?
Matters @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
he didn't ask what Nintendogs was he asked "was it Nintendogs" because Rare Hare never confirmed that it was in his post ;)
Ross Castro (RCagent) @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
I had a cool experience with a DS in a school bus. I was in band, and we had to take a 2 hour bus trip to go play at a football game, I ended up pictochatting for two hours with two guys.
Matters @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
"Nintendogs is an overpriced tomagatchi. Instead of playing with a real dog you pay money for a virtual one."
Care to back that up with facts?
Real dogs are A LOT more expensive and at the same time a lot more work. As a parent I can honestly tell you I'd rather buy my daughter Nintendogs than a real dog. I know I won't be the one who ends up taking care of the Nintendog if you know what I mean.
OTAM @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM

The facts are easy. Tomagatchis werent the price of a DS and a copy of Nintendogs. Also,I didnt say that a real dog was cheaper,i've seen pure breeds ranging in the thousands.
I understand that people buy Nintendogs because it's cheaper and easier than having a real dog,but most people who are animal lovers WILL buy a real dog and this seems like the people the game is aimed for.
It's kind of like people who are gun nuts. What would you see them buying,a real gun,or a gun simulating game?
That's all i'm saying.
xej @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
23:
He didn't say they're cheaper, just that you're paying 50 dollars to play with a virtual dog.
What is very sad is that that's considered the DS's killer app.
PvpMan @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
I have never really had an experience, but My friends and I have some great conversations when we get together. These conversations are just like #18. Funny Stuff. Cant wait for the WiFi connection...
Matters @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
You said and I quote
"Instead of playing with a real dog you pay money for a virtual one". Quite confusing if that's not what you meant. Anyway that was my only beef with what you said so no need to explain further.
Except that Tomagatchis aren't quite as nice as Nintendogs, and even though I'm a dog lover I still some times wish I could just turn them off or not have to worry about them like I could with Nintendogs.
Plus you can't really argue with a $30 price tag.
Matters @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Actually I'm sorry I completely read that wrong.. TWICE. my bad.
Glenn @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
At E3 when everyone was trying to dowload stuff from the DS kiosk I had my buddy open up a Puyo Pop mutiplayer game - we had an 8 player session going in no time - fun stuff!
TJ @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
OTAM.
Gun owner here, and I buy gun games.
Dog owner here, and I can't wait for Nintendogs.
Sure I thought it was an "over priced tamagotchi" at first, but do as I did and look into the game and you'll see it for the masterpiece and work of art it is.
A game that is considered a perfect 40 from Famitsu is one to own, I have 'em all so far and don't plan on being stupid enough to miss out on the 5th!
EvilHayama @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Nintendogs is more about the cuteness of playing with puppies than the actual tamagochi stuff. It's a "Killer app" because people who normally wouldn't play games will play nintendogs, if you don't like the idea of patting dogs don't buy it... But don't knock how many DS's this thing will sell.
Rare Hare @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
@ #20 Matters: "he didn't ask what Nintendogs was he asked "was it Nintendogs" because Rare Hare never confirmed that it was in his post ;)"
i only made one post and in it i said nothing about nintendogs.. what are you talking about??
Turdmoe @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Can you legally beat you real dog senseless constantly i think not. go nintendogs!
J.Rod @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
wow what happened to the stories? I was enjoying them. Now everyone is talking about nintendogs.
Seamus @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
Me and my freinds had brought our DSes to school on one of the last days because we would have not work, so we went into pictochat and started messing around suddenly some person joined our session we looked all over the school but never found the person we found 3 more people with DSes though

It seems like porn movie stories lines has finally caught up with technology.
PiratePete @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
You see that's the thing I like about the DS over my PSP. Its that easy of communication you get with others. Thats what my lovely PSP is missing:(
I think that I'll have to get a DS too.
Hey (Don't want to get flamed here)but does any one the age of the avrage DS owner? Any stats done on that?
AstroRobyn @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
#35 I don't have the actual stats, but my guess is that the average age for DS owners is between the ages of 19 and 27. As unbelieveable as it may seem to some but the DS really is a system that more adults own than children!
Anyway let's get back to a crazy DS story shall we?
My greatest pictochat adventure happened the day of my graduation. Rather then watch and clap as all 750 students went up to recieve their diplomas I instead spent my time chatting it up on pictochat with my little brother and my boyfriend. We ended up encountering a few other kids that were there to supprot their graduating siblings. (The place the ceremony was held was huge too, so we know the DS gets great range!) Finally when it was my turn to go up on stage and get my diploma I had to hide the DS under my robe under my arm. Pictochat was really what made my graduation enjoyable!
Lampbane @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
My mother got rid of our real dog because it was too much trouble. Even though we love dogs.
And yes, it was Nintendogs, I got it last week (I'm special, k?).
jay @ Dec 18th 2005 10:00PM
nope! because i dont really play my DS outside. i play handheld machines because they still value 2D gaming. i still play sat in my bed all the time.
did play my DS a spanish airport once, just me and my girlfriend drawing pics of Doctor Who. hah. with loads of people looking at us amazed with this tech ;)
