According to a recent study, Japanese
consumers aren't interested in the multimedia functions of the PSP. Only 10% of those polled had ever used the PSP to
watch a UMD movie, and a majority did not plan on buying any UMD movies. And less than 50% of them used the memory
stick for viewing pictures and watching converted movie files.
While these numbers are likely different in the US, where almost every major studio has or is planning to release
movies and TV shows in UMD format, it's likely that the "not touched my PSP in some time" trend is global—at least half
of the Japanese consumers that were polled admitted as much. The fact is PSP owners worldwide are desperate for a new
game to play. But with usage down, are developers gonna look the other way?
[Thanks, Adam]
PSP usage is on the decline

I'm sorry everyone. I am so stupid sometimes and I don't consider other people's feelings. I have recently come out as a transexual. I am scheduled to have my operation when some Nintendo DS games come out and I am very upset. Wish me luck!

I find it kind of annoying whenever a news about Sony or playstation comes up, fanboys just come up to bash it with illogical comments.
I own both DS and PSP. They are both fun. The problem is PSP is out later and doesn't have enough games yet. In my opinion Nintendo has the same problem when DS was first out last year. I didn't purchase the majority of my DS games until the last two months. DS didn't have any multimedia capabilities..so my DS was idle most of the time for the first half of 2005.
It's probably a lot harder to develope a game for PSP than DS too. There's actually quite a number of good PSP titles in Japan. Too bad they will never get ported here.
PSP needs strong titles quicks. Good choice would be GTA, GT and a final fantasy title. More strategy and RPG would be nice too.
I am not suprise not many people use PSP for UMD movies. I only use PSP to watch anime that I converted from my PC. I also use it as my portable music player. The UMD movies are just too pricey...they need to push the price down.

THe PSP is all over NYC. I can't count a moment when I haven't seen someone on the train playing a PSP. and all surveys have some level of truth and untruth. The PSP isn't over a year old. It just came out and it has some growing to do. Nothing is perfect

It's a cool gadget to own, but there are no good games yet on it, and I don't see a great game coming anyway. Why would it get more support than it already gets now?
Besides, being a "playstation", it looks underpowered compared to an actual playstation, while the Dual Screen can afford to look overpowered since it's not named "Gamecube portable", and it wasn't in the market to be the most powerful portable anyway.
Any other portable that has tried to take over nintendo's dominance in the portable console industry has failed. Bad.
And the DS has preppared a "smash bros meets anime" game (I don't remember the name, but it features characters from DBZ, among a ton others), advance wars which looks great, resident evil DS, a Zelda is coming to DS too, and best of all, a WiFi enabled Mario Kart. The only thing missing is an actual Smash Bros. that is WiFi enabled. (While we wait for the one on Revolution?)
Eventually, as things look, The PSP will flop. At least as an independent console.

Despite what anyone says, actions speak louder than words. And the simple truth is that the DS is garnering more interest. I think once Nintendo WiFi gets rolling, people are going to be very excited. I just don't see the same momentum for the PSP. And I'm seeing games come out for the PSP, that in my opinion, aren't good for the portable market. Unless these drastically change, I just don't see much consumer interest for the PSP. This article seems like a global trend, to be honest. Three of my friends don't touch their PSP's anymore.

Why would anyone with a brain pay for a movie on UMD? To watch it on the train everyday on the way to work? To have a mini version of their DVD? Sony is ridiculously dumb but the people who buy the PSP for these functions are hopeless.

I try not to be a fanboy, but i have about 5 close friends that have a DS and are getting some really good games soon. The PSP is awesome though when I played it. I was gonna buy it but I dececided to wait for the the closest next gen console(xbox360). I can see why PSP is gettin much attention with much of the hype gone and everything is not looking good.
Sony didnt give it much attention at E3 while nintendo gave the DS lots of attention(probably b/c revo not coming out for a while and sony is focusing on slowing down xbox360 from getting big before ps3)
The Wifi Connection is gettin really exciting at the same time with commercials and other advertising. Which for sony i havent heard much of its online gameplay.
At the moment DS has lots of games coming out, PSP are going to be less (partly due to its developing time and devoloping costs). But if PSP doesnt gain any momentum from a key killer ap, then its over for this round.
Nintendo at the moment has kept most of its market dominance and its impressive for nintendo to do that. Until The next gen gameboy and next gen psp.

Honestly, I think PSP owners are in denial. It's understandable. You've spent a lot of money on the device and it's not quite living up to expectations. It is a shame since it's well-designed and holds a great deal of power. My friends with PSPs hardly ever talk about them or the games they're (not) playing. That can't be said regarding their DSs though.
I don't buy the excuse that it was released later than the Nintendo DS. It's summer here and Nintendo managed to release a few blockbusters for the season. I'm fairly certain Sony could have done the same. 'Infected' looks good though. When does that come out? That's the only upcoming game I know about that I'd really want (even though it does not justify buying a PSP).
While the PSP firmware updates and add-ons are nice, they really need to shift focus on getting some games out if they don't want the PSP to fade away. Or, maybe they could turn things around. Add more media stuff so it's even less of a gaming device. Kind of like right now. More things to increase productivity and turn it more into the pocket pc it appears destined to be. The games would be a perk, instead of the media stuff.

seems like PSP's killer apps are going to be epics. on a machine that's doesn't have goog battery life.
DS can do simple games like nintendogs. pick it up, play with it, turn it off.
Then there are epics like Advance Wars and Fire Emblem. which it can do with it's battery life.

Yeah,
"And the DS has preppared a "smash bros meets anime" game (I don't remember the name, but it features characters from DBZ, among a ton others),"
That's not coming to america. You need to import it if you wanna play it. In America, so many different companies own the rights to each of the characters in the game, licensing issues are a fucking pain in the ass. You can quote me on this, Jump Superstars will never see a US release.
Another thing, which has briefly been touched on(and I slipped into the thick of a paragraph), the development cycle for PSP games is MUCH longer than a DS game. DS games look at 6-12months, while PSP are 12-18months. So even if dev kits were out for both systems at the same time, the babies take longer in the oven. Then again, look at how long Metroid is taking to cook. I read that isn't due until Feb2006 now. Talk about knocked back.
Honestly, you guys have me wondering. I'm going through tomorrow to make a list of PSP games I'm looking forward to, and then a list of DS games I want to own/looking forward to. I may buy a DS again come May of next year when I get my tax refund if the desired game list jumps. Of course a $100 price tag would be nice too, but that won't be til Mar2007 by my guess.

Sorry, a little off-topic, just really wanted that game.
Well, I really haven't touched my PSP in a month so far and I got it five weeks back. I was pretty pissed off when it wouldn't take SD, cause I had a 1 Gig SD mem card for my MP3, so I used the 16 Meg card and I stuffed 4 songs on it, stuck it in the PSP and then nothing happened. I couldn't access the music that I put in, now I was even more pissed off. So I played NFS:U2, graphics were indead amazing but the game wasn't very interesting, due to the fact that I beat almost every NFS game every to exist, racing games got boring for me. So I switched to the Spiderman game, lasted slightly longer than NFS:U2 but I felt that game was really "stupid" and I also lost interest so I turned off the PSP, never touched it since.
I really think the gaming market needs new stuff, that also goes for the PSP, but so far most of the games are PS PS2 and Dreamcast ports, and the few good "big ones" I really don't care about. GTA:Liberty city, I vowed never to buy a GTA game again ever since San Andreaous, it was almost exactly the same as vice city (which I also lost interest in a very short timeframe of about a week) and even if it was different, it didn't keep me interested long enough for me to notice. Battlefront 2 for the PSP I'm not gonna buy cause if I want it I'll get it on the PC. The only game I might get for the PSP is that Lumines game, it sounds rather interesting.
The DS has a lot of New and Different things and that's what I like, cause I'm not a hardcore gamer and I've played games for a long time and all the normal genres of games just started to get boring (mainly FPS and Racing games).
That's why I like Ninty not because I'm a fanboy, but because they offer me the most fun and different games that keep me interested. I don't care if Nintendogs is "kiddy", it looks like a really fun game and I never had a pet. I don't care if meteos looks stupid, it looks like a fun game. I don't care if Advance Wars looks like yet another Ninty rehash, the first two were awsome I so will the third. Plus there's awsome games like Castlevania, Metroid Prime:Huneters, and a possibly Super Smash title in the not so near future (cause it'll probably be annouced at E3 2006 and then be continuously delayed until mid 2007)
That's why I like Ninty stuff, cause I'm just a bored gamer looking for something new to play

Just funny that you list "want new and original stuff" - yet you're anticipating a Castlevania which the GBA already has 3 similar titles to match it(not to mention all the console versions), Metroid(an FPS), Advance Wars(which I'm reading is the first game on crack... a good thing), and smash bros / SSBM were 98% the same game, atleast the engine. Then you want Jump Superstars(just import it, not like you need to read). I'm usually not out to call people a fanboy, but when you get excited for games that have already been done over a few times, they're neither new or original. It's just you have a special place in your heart for them (like advance wars). That's how I feel for some of the sony shit coming out. I may have played BF2 on my PC, but I'd love to have a PS2 version for when I'm away from my box. I also love Dynasty Warriors, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and any 2d RPG I can get my hands on. Those all bring warm fuzzies to my heart, so that's what I'm waiting for on the PSP. Guess it doesn't mean we're fanboys, we're just fans of the series. Fanboys are more defined by the naysay and hatespeak of the opposing consoles.
But yeah, sorry, no chance in hell of Jump Superstars in the US. I know people that have imported it, works out fine. Really don't know why you don't check ebay or lik-sang for it. Probably reasonably priced.

$200 for a phone is pricey IMO. That that point it's considered a PDA with calling abilities. And the screen is bigger than inch by an inch. I still think it'd be hard to read subtitles on a screen that small though. But yes, I like, SUCK, at technology. I don't buy gadgets, and honestly, I have no interest in it aside from gaming systems. If the PSP didn't support video playback, I really wouldn't search out a product to do it. Can't really justify buying something that'll last me less than 2 years before it's obsolete.
Don't even say computers, because I had my last computer for 4 years and it still runs some games that are coming out. Ran HL2 atleast.

I follow the handheld industry and have done so for over seven years. That said, there's usually a reason why Nintendo's handhelds win and it has nothing to do with games, or even marketing, or design. The reason is overhead.
In the early days, the black and white, brick style Game Boy was up against the Atari Lynx, the Game Gear, and the Turbo Express. The other system were all color, with 16bit graphics on two of them, and 8bit graphics with Master System compatability and a TV Tuner on the Game Gear. Nintendo completely smoked them by having the hugely popular (and "educational") Tetris and then following that up with a steady stream of titles. Nintendo was also the cheapest system on the market in comparison to the three other systems. They also had the best overheads, it was possible for companies to invest very little in Game Boy development. In fact, there are a few early Game Boy games that had a staff of about three people. One for sound, one for graphics, and one for the main code. In comparison, you had teams of 20+ on some Game Gear games. The price points were also pretty cheap with Game Gear games being about $10 to $15 more than Game Boy games.
After those died down, Nintendo had a few more competitors in the way of the Game.Com, Wonderswan, Neo Geo Pocket, and GP32 later on it its life. The Game.Com was a mess, but it did have internet compatibility, a built in solitaire game, a backlight, and some productivity software for note taking, etc. It just had a God awful blurry screen. The Wonderswan had a library of hot titles, Capcom supported it, it had Final Fantasy 1 & 2, Riviera, the backing of the Game Boy's original creator, and more! It just had a screen that was not very active until the Crystal variation came out. The Wonderswan Crystal has the sharpest, non-backlit screen out on any handheld. Unfortunately, the Wonderswan started to aim at things other than games with their WonderBorg, had terrible marketing, and the companies that had made games for it found better overheads on the Game Boy Advance. Eventually almost all of the killer titles the unit had found their way to the GBA. The Neo Geo Pocket had a Color and Mini version as well with some very nice support from Sega, Capcom, and -of course- SNK. The problem was that the games were not faithful to their roots -Metal Slug for NGPC was more of a platform game and less of a Shoot Em Up- and it did not have as many games as the established GBC/GBA.
The continued trend among all the units that lost were higher costs for development, and sometimes other factors like poor management or properties, game selection, etc. But the main cause of death has always been overhead.
This brings us to what we have today.
The Game Boy Advance(SP/Micro), the Nintendo DS, the Sony PSP, the GPX, Gizmondo, N-Gage, and the Zodiac.
The Zodiac has already died. I blame its death on its restrictive price and unfocused sales jargon. Was it a game system? A multi-media system? Which? It did have the nicest analogue stick in the industry though. Much more comfortable than the PSP's slide schtick. And less ouch than the Gizmondo's deal.
The N-Gage is dead already and does not know it yet. However, it does have some nice games for it, just the system is awkward to program for and the games limitations compared to price make it unprofitable to develop for.
The GPX has not launched, but like the GP32 before it: Only the hardcore will own this system and they will only use it for emulators. In fact, the company knows this and promotes that use. We won't hear about it in the mainstream, EVER. But for those who import and buy it, the GPX will be rewarding.
Gizmondo is in a tailspin right now, but they try. All they really need to get out of this rut is to get dev kits out freely to developers, and convince their biggest backer -Microsoft- to let them use three of the biggest franchises that MS has: Halo, Monster Truck Madness, and Oddworld. The Gizmondo is more of a gadgeteers handheld than the PSP, NGage, Zodiac, and GP32. The unit is durable, but the lack of any real fuel to this rocket will mean that they will be dead by fourth quarter 2006.
The Game Boy Advance is not exactly on its last legs. There are still games and franchises being made for it. The biggest of which are Mother 3, Card Hero, Screw Breaker, Digitylish, etc. The GBA is the handheld that companies make the most profit on working with. It's established, can use small teams, the expectations are low on games for it so, it is easy to impress people with it. 3D engines work surprisingly well. Check the engines in titles like Tony Hawk, Monster Truck Madness, Super Monkey Ball Jr., Star X, etc. The system has a loyal homebrew following (LumineSweeper!), and rather good multi-media options. (GBA Video, Play-Yan, M3, and the original GBA MP) Games are planned for the unit all the way into 2006. I expect Nintendo to replace the unit with a more powerful one by fourth quarter 2006.
The Sony PSP is an odd bird right now, it has decent sales in the USA, but the market in Japan is more important and it is losing that market. Japan is where the bulk of actual development takes place in the video game industry, so good sales there mean more attention from that crucial amount of developers. Overhead on the system is ridiculously expensive and complex right now. This is why the majority of released items for this handheld are UMD movies. The system is also very unfocused right now. Sony needs to choose GAMES FIRST and stick with that strategy, or they will have to drop the PSP by first quarter 2007. The system also lacks a variety of high selling franchises. In Japan, this lack is very obvious. Here in America, things like Midnight Club, Grand Theft Auto, and sports games carry more weight. In Japan, the unit has failed to announce or release any software that may appeal to the long run consumer aside from Hot Shots Golf. This should change with Gran Turismo Mobile, and Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core. However, both of those games are set for 2006, not the crucial 2005 Christmas season. In Japan, the PSP will take a drubbing. It is not "fanboyish" to say that; because that is true. Sony has dropped the ball on the PSP in many ways and with the upcoming focus on the console fight, they may drop the entire PSP before the end of first quarter 2007, if it does not show true profits by third quarter 2006. The European launch is being watched very carefully. If that launch does well for Sony, the PSP may continue to live. E3 2006 is incredibly crucial for the unit. Polls like this poll from 1up are less than good news for a system with high costs and low profit margins. Sony has done nothing but make those worse with their constant firmware upgrades. I give it until upgrade 2.7 before they accidentally make some of the launch titles for the unit stop working.
The Nintendo DS is an unusual case. The unit has over 50 games in Japan now and by the end of the year, will have over 100+ game titles worldwide. It has franchise, but it is under-powered in comparison to the PSP. This under-powered stature is actually benefitting the console. It has a weird control scheme, but the profit margins on the unit are better than the margins on the PSP. The margins are not as good as the GBA, but it can also play GBA software. For all extents and purposes, the Nintendo DS can continue in its current path and be profitable until up to fourth quarter 2007. It would seem that the Nintendo DS has survived by taking every single fumble the PSP has let happen and taking that into a touchdown. The profit margin is going to get better on the unit as prices for games are set to drop soon. The lowered price of the unit recently on the advent of two very different but equally enjoyed genre games (Advance Wars & Nintendogs) was a very smart mood. The future for the unit is a lot better than I would have expected. But the increase in profit margins on the u
PSP is not PS2 perfect... unless you need glasses. It's more on the level of Dreamcast (which is still pretty good). But PSP = PS2?? No way! Dreamcast = Near PS2? Yah.

You may be able to afford more expensive gadgets, more games and upgrade your computer if you didn't buy your movies 2x, once on DVD and again on UMD as you stated in this thread.

You are right when you say the Treo is PDA + Phone. At $200, it is a steal. I'll be getting one now that they are that cheap. If you can manage to use your PC for 4 years, a good PDA could last you even longer.
From what I see, the emulators for the Treo rock and it has a whole lot more functionality than the PSP. The kids at TreoCentral are saying that you can use it play MP3s (along with a LOT of other formats) and even use ID3 tags to search for songs in your collection.
Neat! Sign me up!

I wonder what Christopher7xii's commission from Sony is.

I'm NOT looking for a PDA though. Why are you coming on this thread to talk about another thread anyways? My computer lasts 4 years, I mean in terms of gaming. I have absolutely no use for a PDA, otherwise I would have bought one by now. Go you, I'm glad you're sold on that Treo, but I really don't care for it. Not by bag of tea or whatever. Rather just own a DS and a PSP for my portability fun.
And Philip Wesley, that is a LONG post. While I'm sure it makes sense to you, some of it seems kind of silly. 97% of the history of the rest of the things you mentioned, you're able to read about everywhere else online. So not necessarily your own thoughts. As for the future of the PSP vs Overhead... I don't think that Sony would drop the PSP so fast as 2 years of a life. They've invested way too much time and money into that thing to let it die within 2 years. I mean, they still supported the PS1 up until like March 2005, and I know there wasn't really a market for it. My guess is once there is a smash hit(like FF7:CC) in Japan, units will move like crazy, and they'll smack everyone in the face for doubting them. Not sure if you know the Japanese business scene, but they go by a "plan 10 years in ahead" as opposed to the american's "plan for this year". Also, not sure if you knew or not, but Xmas isn't their big selling point in Japan. I don't remember the timeframe that was their big selling point, but mostly due to the fact that they don't celebrate Christmas in the fashion that we do, it's not their "must kill" season.
I'll agree, the PSP needs more titles. I'm not denying that at all. The big difference between the PSP and all those other systems though, is right now there is enough market for more than one handheld to survive. Video games are INCREDIBLY mainstream now. I mean, regardless of who's on top, PSP has sold like well over 4mil units by now I thought? None of those other systems really accomplished that. The install base will just grow and grow by the end of 2006 as well. There are more than enough PSP game and movie sales to warrant the continuation of the system.
You forgot one major advantage the GBA/DS have over the PSP. Kids play them, so parents buy the games. The buyers for PSP games are smarter, more reserved with their purchases. I'm sure as hell not going to purchase SpiderMan2 for the PSP because I know it's a junk release title that exists simply as filler. Parents of kids with DS/GBA see a cheap title as "its a game, they'll like it. they LOVE spiderman!". That on top of the $5-10 more per game on the PSP makes gamers even more selective with their purchases. Basically, PSP just needs to cut the filler, because it's going to reflect negatively on the sales. The need the old school Nintendo Policy. Game must meet X standards, approved by Nintendo, in order to be released.
I see games like Gripshift drawing sleeper like status, since it's basically a better Mario Kart. Also Untold Legends 2, it looks WAY better than the previous installment, not to mention infastructure. Games like that require it.

$350 a week for slamming Blog sites with promotional speak.
No, I just think the UMD videos look better. Honestly, if it didn't come free with Spiderman2 I would have never given it a chance. I'm assuming that's why they did that, though. It honestly wasn't until I picked up Cowboy Bebop on UMD, ripped my DVD and converted it for my gig stick, then compared the two that I noticed such an amazing difference.
Me and Sony aren't talking right now though. With their recent news/rumor of a holiday release of Advent Children stateside, I'm upset with them. Yes I realize that's Square-Enix, but after Sony bailed them out of the horrific ordeal of FF:TSW, Sony basically controls them.

This is going to sound a bit stupid, but one of the main reasons I think that the PSP is lagging behind is FEAR.
I don't mean the exciting First Person Shooter due out in October, I mean the fear of something that makes geeks shudder with ah, er, terror.
Dropping the PSP.
I would bring it everywhere if I hadn't spent $250 on it. I mean, hell, if I drop my GBA/SP who gives a crap, it will probably still work, and if it doesn't
I can just get a new one for $100.
If I drop the PSP, it is gone forever. So I don't bring it out much. I basically go from couch to toilet to kitchen table with it, and even then I have almost
dropped it a few times.
I am afraid to leave it in the car.
I wouldn't ever take it to the mall.
Certainly not skateboarding. I don't skateboard, but well whatever.
The DS I would take out more if I still had it, but really apart from pictochat what is the difference between that and the SP?
I can see myself getting rid of the PSP here pretty soon. Maybe invest the money in a XB360 or a computer upgrade.
Maybe I will buy a Gameboy micro and a play-yan. That is almost like having a really crappy psp. BUT, and this is the important thing, I wont give a flip if I drop it!!!!
Did I mention that FEAR is coming out in October? Sorry PC only!!!!

I carry my PSP everywhere. I got a NakiWorld zip up clam pouch thing with a wrist strap. So i pop it in there, then in my pocket / around my wrist. I have dropped it, inside the case and outside a few times, and it's held together fine. Eitherway, thats why you get a warranty, you tool. I got a 2 year warranty with MediaPlay. Chance if you drop it and it DOES break, it will be internal, no exterior damage. Getting your warranty dealt($20) isn't that hard, definitely cheaper than breaking your SP and buying a new one.
And yeah, FEAR looks sweet. Hilarious story, my roommate's bro was playing through the demo and accidentally fell down "the" ladder. You know which one I'm talking about, so completely missed out on the whole scary jump away from the computer part.

There's something about the term clam puch I don't like...
Yeah, I got mine at walmart on launch eve.
No extended warranty there.
FEAR Beta Multiplayer is pretty cool. Not as much fun as HL2 but still amusing. Rag doll physics with arms blowing off. Pretty gorey.
Yeah that first time the little girl showed up I totally wasn't expecting it, and man I haven't been freaked out that good in a video game EVER. I just started blazing away say What the HELL!@??!?!

Get this straight The DS has no graphics whats so ever and if you would like to see something special look away, the touch pad is quite pointless really, two screens congrats only if it had better colours and graphics, the games are so short you might as well be playing phone games and who really needs a chat if you sitting right next to the guy?. PSP plays movies/music, views pictures, has really brilliant graphics and is most likely going to get you past those hours travelling. It even lets you go on the web and still you can get your own vids. So value for money = PSP.. Great games = PSP ... So get over your plastic DS and get the real stuff.

psp is pretty bad. right now i am hooked on advance wars: dual strike. it was a great day when i sold my psp (lasted less than a month) to get a ds.
the graphics were indeed MUCH better on the psp, but thats not what i look for in a game. psp games lasted 3 hours before i got bored of them.
p.s. i can't see why everyone isn't f*cking tired of gta!!! each game is a repeat with better graphics.
