Sony confirms no PS2 price cut this Christmas

Slim PlayStation 2 PS2 (225) Sorry, kids, it looks like Santa Sony is not going to be as nice this year. Despite rumors that the PlayStation 2 may see its price drop to $100, SCE UK boss Ray Maguire has told BBC that no such price cut will happen before this Christmas, instead opting to use new software to drive the sales of its current generation console.

Honestly, did it need the price cut? Sony likely considered it, then opted out when they realized the incredulous package prices on the new Xbox 360. I think Sony is hoping to just ride the wave of ire that many feel against the Xbox 360 price plan.

Come now -- none of the Xbox packages are $700. That's just a few retailers taking advantage of the excitement around the Xbox 360 launch to upsell. The Xbox 360 packages are $300 and $400.

Still, I would not be surprised if Sony cuts the prices on the PS2 anyway. They'll do whatever they can to dampen enthusiasm for Microsoft's new console.

I was wanting to replace my PS2 with a PStwo this Christmas with a present to me from me (you know the one :D)

Ah well, looks like a few DS/'Cube/PS2 games instead, that price cut can't be too far away into next year!

Here I was hoping to snag a slim for $99 with a copy of Shadow of Colossus...man, that game looks like it's gonna kick some arse! I can't get some of the images out of my head...

Oh wait, maybe the Joystiq writers judge the decisions of game-system-producing companies based on an honest appraisal of the relative merits of those decisions?

Stop bitching about the XBOX package prices, it is getting old and seems like you are sneaking it into every other post. Is it too much to ask your lazy blogging ass to get off your computer and walk on down to EB Games or the like and preorder the exact stuff you want like many of us already did? (I preordered the Premier package, one charge and play, Perfect Dark, and Madden...they did not make me buy some bundle at EB Games here in Austin) You know there is a world outside of your apartment, and there are real stores off of the internet.
