While the controller camps within upcoming consoles of choice debate
the size, shape, weight, functions and color of the upcoming controllers, genius-types around the country are pushing
levels beyond the EyeToy for future interaction with games and other machines. The Eye-Toy on roids
implementation, a la Minority Report, involves gestures in 3-d space to impact virtual worlds. The project,
G-Speak Gestural Technology (check it out here), is underway at MIT.
Another project, hubbed at USC-Cinema, involves wired and wireless engagement in 3D space you can witness
here. These kinds of
innovations will take us out of the living room to play games, mixing the virutal and real worlds in even more
compelling ways. Excellent.
Controllers? We don't need no stinkin' controllers.

I was taught under Peter Brinson at UCSD. He was always experimenting with creating different video game experiences for the sake of art and technology. It's good to hear about him.

Glad to help out anytime...but most definitely a cool subject matter. Very exciting tech to be seen from all of this.

Since Minority Report came out, I have felt that if you really had to do your work the way Cruise's character does, waving aound your arms and looking generally pathetic, like some guy in the classical music section at Virgin Megastore acting out some great conductor's masterpiece, you would be exhausted by lunchtime.
But maybe you could build up your stamina with all the exercise...

Does anyone remember U-force? Google it. I was this hokey peripheral for the NES that was essentially a black screen that you wavied your hands in fornt of to controll the game. Its the same type of gimmick. It didn't work then and won't work now.

These 3d room "immersion" games are really cool. The only problem I forsee is that even if the technology comes as far as displaying games properly in a 3d world around you, there will not be enough room for you to walk around in. Think about it, you'd need a gym to walk around in the game a bit.
