After reading this
15 minute Q&A with Uwe Boll by Globe Technology's game section, @play, my opinon of Mr. Boll increased a bit. I
no longer feel like bashing him because his movies, well, are generally crap. However, I think I now understand why Uwe
has had such a hard time catering to the gamer/movie buff and I'd like to offer some constructive criticism.
People that enjoyed the House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark games (which Uwe made movies of) probably spent at
least 10-15 hours playing the game. Spending 15 hours on a game gives you some degree of attachment to the game. You
start to know how it feels to play and you can start imagining how the characters could develop (although in the case
of House of the Dead, the zombies hardly develop much. Either blow 'em away or they eat your brains). Because gamers
that watch Uwe's films after they play the games have an in-built idea of what they thought it should be like, they
inevitably find that they didn't like a lot of the new content that Uwe has just pulled out of thin air. This idea is
similar to watching a film after reading a book. The number of times I've read a book and then seen the film and been
slightly disappointed is uncountable. However, sometimes I've found that the movie can take new slants that I would
never have thought about.
This is what Uwe should be going for when he creates his movies. My advice to him is; stop picking the non-plot games like House of the Dead so you can completely reinvent them, instead choose a title like Deus Ex and make the movie relate to the game, but also lead the viewer into new areas. However the chances of this happening are sorta slim, Uwe?s already talking about how ?Far Cry, for example, has a great story?. Um, isn?t that the game that Gamespy put in the ?Cons? box as having a ?weak plot and story?? Yeah, thought so. Mr. Boll, you have the capability to make movies based on games that both gamers and non-gamers alike could enjoy. Please, please, pleeeease don?t screw up again. Now, is that constructive enough?
