Last night, Sean "P. Diddy/Puff Daddy" Combs hosted the MTV Video Music Awards, which normally would not matter to a video game site such as Joystiq, except of course for the "Best Game Soundtrack" category. The nominations were, as to be expected, all compilations of popular songs – but this is MTV, not the Grammy's, so there is no surprise there. Madden 2005, Midnight Club 3, Def Jam, Tony Hawk's Underground 2…and Dance Dance Revolution? Yes, DDR Extreme was nominated for the category, and it actually won. Granted, DDR does feature a variety of songs from all genres, including some mainstream artists, it actually had some songs composed by Konami developers, too. I do not gain any new respect for the now-devoid-of-music channel, but still I am a bit surprised by their choice.

Actually, this is the second year that there was such a category. Tony Hawk Underground won last year.
Before anyone wants to give MTV credit for this, keep two things in mind - first, the American version of DDR Extreme is the worst song line-up in the history of the game (including the Game Boy Color version), and second, Katamari Damacy was not nominated.

I second 32's opinion. Although I would like to add that DDRX was still better by far than the other nominees.

Ummmm, i think MTV did not choose the game, its the viewers who could vote for the winner on mtv.com.

There is something almost breathtakingly beautiful about Katamari Damacy, isn't there? It's indescribable, much like what makes the main theme song so catchy ("naa, na na NA na na naa na, n-na na na na na na naa" doesn't seem to capture it's essence, really).

The thing with almost all "Best Video Game Soundtrack" awards is that the music taste that they are awarding is not of the gamer, but rather of the mainstream. You'll never see Katamari Damacy, Halo, or Final Fantasy nominated...because the mainstream audience won't have a clue, but they will know the music of Madden, Def Jam, Tony Hawk, etc. People tend to forget this when criticizing these awards; awarding mainstream music, awards that were created by mainstream companies, for the mass audience.

isn't it just "Diddy" now? ;-) (sorry, it's so retarted I had to bring it up)

""I felt like the 'P' was getting between me and my fans and now we're closer," Diddy said.
"During concerts, half the crowd is saying 'P. Diddy'--half the crowd is chanting 'Diddy'--now everybody can just chant 'Diddy.' "
He confessed that his unwieldy name was even starting to befuddle him.
"I even started to get confused myself--and when I'd called someone on the telephone it took me a long time to explain who I was. Too long," Diddy told the New York Post."

Your exactly right because I wouldnt call the music in those games award quality. Would you listen to Halo's music on your spare time, chillin at the crib or bumb that in your car? Does Halo make you wanna dance? I dont think so, thats why its not nominated.
Dont get me wrong though, im not saying the music in those games is bad, the music compliments the games while playing the game. The nominations above are good ingame and out of game.

Would I dance to Halo or Final Fantasy music? No. But, to be honest, I don't like to dance to the music I like anyway. Would I listen to Final Fantasy music, either sitting around reading in the background, or driving down the street? Yes, and I do. I also have songs from Phantom Brave, Wind Waker and Katamari among others in my playlist.
And I'll be honest. Simple and Clean is simply brutal. (in a good way)

using the word crib you automatically disqualify yourself from contributing to this conversation, because its pretty obvious that you dont get it.

I was listening to Radio 1 when they were telling people about Diddy's name change. Funny thing. Diddy is apparently Irish/Welsh slang for tits.
With regards to the music, considering the FF series is one of the most remixed games on OCRemix, I would've thought the series would've gotten a better mention.

I gave the DJ at my wedding a burned CD with two songs from Katamari Damacy ("Que Sera Sera" and "The Cherry Blossom Color Season"). He didn't play them *gumblegrumble*, but my wife and I (and many others) would have danced to them.
And I listen to music from Final Fantasy regularly.
