Street Fighter 4 announcement in Japan later this week?
With all the retro
fighting-game
compilations Capcom has pumped out recently, we have
to wonder whether they've completely ceded the (2D) fighting genre to the likes of
Guilty Gear or those endless
King of Fighters packs. (We could consider an
anomaly like Capcom Fighting
Evolution, but seriously, let's not.) For the fighting faithful, what we want more than anything — more
than another vs. title or a killer (slow)
strategy-RPG crossover — is a true successor to
Street Fighter (whether you wanna go back to
II or III for your favorite 2D inspiration). Well, folks clamoring for more Ryu-Ken craziness
can wait a few days longer because Capcom is set to show off a new arcade fighting game at the Amusement Machine
Show in Japan September 1-3 (this week!), though no official details of what the game is have been released. An
unofficial list of games currently circulating online, however, states that SF4 will be making an
appearance at Capcom's booth. Even if such a game will only be shown in video format, you can imagine the
pandemonium that might ensue, if these rumors prove to be true, once the doors are open to the public on the 3rd
(especially considering that admission is free).
Rumors
of a continuation of the Street Fighter
series from this year's San Diego Comic-Con may finally be confirmed… or not. Here's hoping Capcom's got something
good in store for us.

Will the Street Fighter series go 3D?
Tune in next time!
Cooper @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
It already did go 3D didn't it? Or are we not counting the EX series.
SF4 would be fantastic. Especially if it could suck only half as bad as SF3.
Christopher7xii @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Street Fighter did already go 3D.
Street Fighter EX.
It went back to 2D very shortly after for a very good reason.
boxmyth @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Street Fighter 4 would be one hell of an exclusive for X360 in Japan if Microsoft's that forward-thinking.
Ryu @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Hadoken!!!
MikeSkiX @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
street fighter 4 would be good for fighting game fans..but not in 3d never really like the 3d street fighter games..so keep it 2d.. capcom need to think back to street fighter 2. return to the pass CAPCOM.. make your fighting fan come back again :)

Street fighter 3 wasn't that bad, but the best street fighters are the 2, and by saying the 2, I'm counting Alpha, because it was very closely related, both in the fighting engine and in the story.
Street fighter EX plus bullshit can stop coming out already. They've already done too many versions, it wasn't popular, it wasn't well done, and the graphics were horrible. Unless they make a good 3D street fighter (that doesn't resemble a bit to EX) with all the pros the 2D had plus with a huge graphical change (if the arcade was based on the CELL processor for PS3 that would rule). Perhaps a new 3D combo system plus the old supercombos and the typical three kicks and three punches.
I also hope all the classic fighters (from alpha,1, 2, 3) come back and give a chance to some in EX, plus some new characters. I want to see Dan, Sean, Ken, Ryu, Evil Ryu, Akuma, Gouki, Sheng Long, Sakura, etc.
And the best thing they could do, as Capcom is great at that, is adding cut-scenes like the ones on Resident Evil.
I can't wait.
Blue Balloon @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I don't like SF in 3D, it's pretty uncomfortable to play and unfamiliar. Stick with 2D and enjoy for a while.
SF3 is ok-ok, it's not same as SF2. I more enjoy on SF Alpha series, they are much fun to play.
Efren @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
What they should do is take 3D characters and backrounds and put them into a 2D fighting game like the Xmen one on PS1..
Best of both worlds cause the 3D Sfs really sucked.
VGH @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I agree with #9,that would be great ^_^
e1ghtball @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
could be a resurrection of capcom fighting allstars.. that was lookign pretty good in terms of a 3d sf game until it got canned. turning that into sf4 might be kinda nice.
also, much agreement with #9, but only because I've seen the models that were in use in capcom fighting allstars, they managed to keep the stylised nature of the 2d art when translating it to 3d models
General M Bison @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Finally after a while with all theses Street Fighter II games and the spin offs with Alpha and EX, Street Fighter with go on with its number to 4. Can't wait to see the screen shots from the game.
White Rose Duelist @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I didn't know Capcom was aware that there were numbers higher than three. They released so many games with variations on a title. I personally liked Super Street Fighter II Turbo Championship Edition Revival Alpha the best.
Achmed @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
io think street fighter should stay @d the 3d graphics just aint right and it is harder to understand the control. When they make the new SF4 they shoiuld keep in 2d mode. Achmed peace out.
Lysander @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
You guys need to stop talkign about Street Fighter X. Capcom didn't make those. They licensed the name to Erica. The games are almost completely unrelated. Capcom's never made any 3d fighters, just 2d ones with 3d backgrounds (CVS2). A 3d fighter without all the labyrinthian moveslists in... every-damn-3d game made, made by Capcom...? I dunno, I think I could dig it.
Dan Choi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Ah, you meant EX, right? Still, you should keep in mind that they were working on the 3D Capcom Fighting All-Stars, too, but ending up cancelled it a few years ago, probably because the game wasn't turning out as well as they'd hoped:
http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/capcomfightingallstars/news_6072977.html
Capcom has to be careful how they break from their 2D fighting-game traditions if they want their beloved beat-'em-ups (particularly Street Fighter) to thrive in 3D. Witness the sub-60% scores for Beatdown:
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages4/926268.asp
Carmine @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
From my understanding, Beatdown was not developed internally. 3D fighters made by Capcom include Rival Schools, Powerstone, Tech Romancer, and Star Gladiator.
Dan Choi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Unfortunately, all the games you listed came out either for the original PlayStation or the Dreamcast. Why couldn't Capcom make the next(er, current)-gen jump? I suppose it was a matter of priorities (RE, DMC, vs. titles), but EX just didn't fit the bill (at least for most people).
SF HARDCORE @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
3D:
If they stick to their guns and make a decent (please, God, no more EX) 3D fighter, it'll be okay. SoulCalibur proved that it can work, with the right devotion and tuning.
2D:
Two thoughts - if it needs to be slower, yet more calculated, make it a fusion of 3rd Strike and Alpha (zero) 3. If you're wanting fast and furious (which would be pretty cool), go for a single-fighter MVC-style experience, but update the sprites already.
andy @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I'd be worried about 4, because they got the system perfect in 3. It's impossible to win with BS in 3. It's so balanced and makes for amazing competition. I hope 4 is 3 with more characters, a few gameplay additions, and flesh out the story with some cutscenes for god's sake.
Dan Choi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Actually, I'm kinda hoping that the arcade fighting game in question isn't this Dynasty Warriors rip-off (except with skeleton warriors!):
http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/09/01/news_6132423.html
Well, we'll find out soon enough. (From the makers of Street Fighter!! Argh...)
Super Sonic @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Street Fighter EX wasnt done by capcom. Its not really a Street Fighter!!!!!!!
Sai @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Can it officially be confirmed that SF4 is being showcased and not SF Alpha 3 Double Upper on the PSP?
I really do hope it's SF4, I have been hoping for this for years...
Dan Choi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Hmm... I'm afraid that my sentiments from comment #21 might be closer to the truth than SFA3:DU for the PSP, Sai; as excited as I am by that news, it just ain't the same (as I'm sure you're aware). Let us all know if you hear anything to the contrary, though.
x @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
i was thinking what if Street Fighter 4 is cell shaded?
