[UPDATE: Could this story be a fake? Some of those who've left comments below note some
interesting discrepancies in Naomi's narrative. We'll wait for some confirmation before posting any further, but the
not-Chinese-sounding screen name could be explicable. Maybe.]
A student in Alabama named Naomi has posted a single-entry
blog on RedAssedBaboon.com describing conditions in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
"[E]ven though the entire nation is
donating
money like crazy," Naomi believes that she and her drowned
city won't be seeing any of it, regardless. Her cynicism might be tragically typical of reports we've seen coming out
of the Gulf Coast states lately, but her gaming perspective is not. Not only did she make her online report using a
gas-powered generator at home, but she also compared all the looting and mugging to "a video game where all you
do is run around and do whatever you want" (sound familiar, Grand Theft Auto fans?), and her unchanging
interactions with shell-shocked residents to conversations with NPCs (Non-Player Characters) in RPGs (Role-Playing
Games).
Now that Interdictor guy might be conserving his fuel a
bit better over in New Orleans, but you gotta admire Naomi's spunk. After all, she's got enough supplies to hold out
for a month, and she's got a gun to stop any trespassers who might break into her humble home.
Rumored movie scripts aside, this
could make for the basis of a relevant Resident Evil or
Disaster Report sequel
(however tasteless or coincidental in concept it might be). Are there any other reports from fellow gamers we should
know about out there?
