Bungie's Fight the Flood shirts tally over $100,000 in sales
As of late this afternoon, Bungie has recorded over $100,000
in total sales for the "Fight the Flood" T-shirts
that went on sale last Friday to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina. 7,300 shirts have been sold at last count
(which means that $15 from each $19.95 sale rightly produced the six-figure total we see above).
The team here at Joystiq would like to keep an ongoing tally of how much major players in the video-game industry have donated so far. Oh, and if there are any reps for participating game companies reading this (anyone from SOE/EverQuest II out there?), please let us know what you've collected up till now, and we'll update the following list with your totals. Thanks for helping a good cause! You can order a shirt from the Bungie store by following the link here and at the bottom of this post.

Pretty dumb, Bungie/Microsoft could have donated much more than that immediately when it would have counted.
Dmitri (Online Name: ScopeShot) @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
So you don't think people should donate, only the companies?
And you call the idea dumb.
konron @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
For every 10 people who try to do something good for this disaster, there will be at least 1 or 2 who badmouth it and try to find something negative in all these relief efforts. Bungie are taking the time and effort to stir some sympathy and help among the gaming community (and were able to raise a good amount of money in doing so), and if you think you can do much better, I invite you to try.

Don't confuse these donations with corporate donations. Every one of those shirts was purchased by a gamer who wanted his or her money to go to recovery efforts. This isn't about Microsoft/Bungie generosity. It's just a cool idea they put together to help channel funds to victims. That's a good idea.
CB4D @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Ruari you're a fool.

Microsoft donated $1 million immediately, and is matching employee contributions (which I'm sure will be significant).
think before speak
BlackYoshi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Ruari wins troll post of the month in one fell swoop. What an idiot. Anyways, classy and clever move by Bungie.
jakk, blackrock @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
its nice to see gamers helping out during a disaster. to bad they will not get recognized by the mainstream media:(
Robert @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
disregarding the previous posts...
Well done Bungie!

does no one else see how awesomely witty this is?
they're doing good work, for pete's sake!
it's more than you jerks are doing.
Barry @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I know some don't like to call it a "game," but Second Life users have donated $3,000 +, which is impressive considering that the money donated was all Linden Dollars, which were/will be converted to real world American dollars through a third-party website.
Ruari @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
1 million to Microsoft is really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really chump change for them. The actual day to day disaster fund cost is 500 million per day. And giving out some shit t-shirt to get funds is stupid. When Microsoft could have gave a LOT MORE very quickly.
Ruari @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
I told you this shirt is pointless it made 100,000 that is SHIT. 500 million cost per day 100,000 would be spent in 5 second. Come on, the richest company in the world donating a PATHETIC 1 million. Gates has probably got toilet seats worth more than that.
Dan Choi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Ruari, I'm sure you must feel stung by the reactions to your first post earlier in the evening, but that's no excuse to go off and call $100,000 in donations "crap" (so to speak). If Bungie's gesture encouraged thousands of Halo fans to contribute when they otherwise might not have, why crap all over their efforts? I have to admit I let your first comment slide (with great reservations), but I'm afraid that I'll have to start locking your posts if you continue trolling against Microsoft's corporate philanthropy in this thread. Consider yourself warned.
Frank @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
SOE (Everquest II) won't know how much money they collected because they haven't collected any money. All they've done is add a command that takes the player to a third party website where the player may then donate some money.
Dan Choi @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Ah, I see, Frank. I suppose if the Red Cross is not tallying "referral" totals for donations from SOE/EQ2 players, I guess we won't be seeing hard numbers from them anytime soon, 'ey? The call to other publishers/developers still stands, however, as they've certainly come out in force to support good causes in the recent past. (See
http://www.childsplaycharity.org/ for one prominent example.)
Glenn @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Dan, is that a personal attack on Frank?
;)
In any event, the real problem here is George Bush. He had a memo in hand a year before Katrina hit that this was going to happen and due to miscommunications between the FBI and the CIA, nothing was done about it. While Microsoft has only donated 1 million so far, the good news is they are financing the Michael Moore documentary "Water Over the Bridge" showing how once again Bush let the country down by not acting on previously held information.
Kris @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
@18
100.000/500.000.000 = 0.0002
24*60*60=86.400 seconds in a day
so actually when you multiply that amount of money would be spent in 17.28 seconds
I find it a great thing that companies are organizing these collections.
I want to make some remarks besides the point.
about bush and the position of America. So if you don't want to read that. Stop reading.
Allthough i feel sorry for those people whose life was turned upside down by Katrina i Feel the need to say something
We in Europe feel pity for those americans who voted for Bush. Instead of fighting his holy war he should have done something for America.
Unemployment, healthcare, safety, enviroment (not by fighting in Iraq)
We now see images of police looting as well. Or corpses beside the road pushed away by officers feet. Not taken away because the first priority is a search and rescue mission. (why the hell are they standing on the road and not searching the houses)Besides it iscommon knowledge that he dead bring bacteria with them. The first signs of epidemic outbreaks are allready in. Every sane person could tell you that it would help the living not only for physical but also mental health reasons to remove the death. But no.
We watch in amazement the things that are happening.
For those people who think that I liked Moores Fahrenheit they are wrong. When Bowling for Columbine could hardly keep my attention. Fahrenheit was much worse. I was angry i paid to actually see this movie. He uses excerpts and cuts and pastes it together untill he has his own propoganda machine. One of the first things I remembered was hearing that maybe enviromental activists where behind the hijacking of the planes. the first plane that hit the towers was believed to be an error.
Allthough i found that hard to belief I know certain people would go to great lengths to make a point ( I found the hijacking of the plane hard to believe) When the second plane crashed I just knew (or hoped) that it had nothing to do with those activists and I was afraid the end of the world was close
By the way I brought the enviroment up because some scientists believe that disasters caused by nature are linked to the heating of the world.
I wished Bush could speak about this disaster that hit America without that stupid grin on his face. (For those who voted for Bush I didn't believe in Kerry either)
Coyote @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Kris, Id never heard about the enviromental activists theory but then I only heard about 9/11 after all the terror was through. Also when it comes to global warming causing all this death and destruction its more an issue of over population, hurricanes and earthquakes have always happened (more so if you look at the long history in these areas). The reason so many die is with so many people in such areas its hard to organize evacuations and provide supplies for all those that cant/wont get out.
And in donation news, penny-arcade has raised $8,800 with a single drawing Gabe did for the PAX logo that otherwise would have probably been used as a door prize or something. I feel sad when I realize all these contributions from gamers will never be recognized and when this is all over Jack Thomson will go back to his soapbox and condemn us all.
Kris @ Dec 18th 2005 9:36PM
Gamers arn't recognized as a demographic group.
that is why they won't be recognized.
Allthough there is improvement
http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000357058012/
I find the efforts by the gaming community hearth warming.
I see tons of gaming sites that have added a link to the red cross.
Maybe if the gaming world wants to be recognized they have to make their own fund.
If gamers would solely donate in that fund. People would be surprised how much money was raised by them. I believe the feeling of not being recognized has something to do with the negative publicity about games. This publicity makes the gamer an outcast.
Similarities can be found in the music and movies history.
Coyote about the other disaster that struck the USA. earlier that year the US withdraw from the Kyoto agreement. In Europe that was big news. Allthough the withdrawal of the US happened in the spring. The colums that appeared in newspapers kept this in the news.
On 9/11 the media soon came out with all kind of theories. And that one I will always remember because of it 'say it isn't so feeling' I had.
